DO NOT let your family member go there. if i could give it 0 i would. the photos on their website…read moreare inaccurate and i would love to know how it qualifies as 5 stars on medicare.gov. my father had to end up there due to insurance reasons and i discharged him as soon as i got there. upon arrival you will meet a broken down parking lot. you will enter to find a shabby reception desk and an uninviting vibe. then you get to the patient floor and you get to see patients wandering, hacking, yelling, and overall a chaotic mess. you will enter the room and find it looks NOTHING like the photo and should be considered inhumane. the equivalent of a dog living in a shelter. oh, and the art is GREAT too, some sadist must have picked it out

My brother who passed away last month was a patient at Fresh River since 2018. His was a difficult…read morecase...his mental and physical disabilities were quite challenging and profound and he required 24/7 nursing care. The only way my family could afford his healthcare was with Medicaid which simply cannot provide all the bells and whistles. That being said, every member of the staff...receptionists, aids, nurses and administrators who I came to know were caring, kind and responsive. Whenever an issue came up that needed to be addressed, they worked with me to help resolve things. Were things perfect? NO. But at the end of the day, the staff was so caring with my brother, who didn't want to be there. (Is there anyone who given the choice, wants to be in a nursing home?). The building is not fancy...I'm sure if they could get more funding they would do more...but it was always clean. I lived 50 miles from Fresh River and during his time, I looked at other places that were nearby, but none seemed to compare in terms of the care and attitude of the staff. So what did these years teach me? If you are forced to have your loved one in a nursing home, take a moment to think about the folks who are with him everyday. These are not easy jobs. These are folks who are there to solve difficult problems when the outcomes are not always pleasant. I couldn't do what they do. I'm truly grateful to the staff at Fresh River who were there for my brother when I couldn't be.

It is unique not only in the A+ care that all residents receive, but the Little Sisters of the Poor truly live their mission, "to care for the Elderly Poor" with Love, Joy and Respect. Every resident I have come to know absolutely Loves living at the Residence. Their lives are filled with joy which is clearly evident whenever you visit. As one resident says, "St. Joseph's Residence is like living on the Good Ship Lollipop, without ever leaving port". As a result, our family members live longer, happier lives. That is a testament to the Care they receive and the sense of belonging - a sense of Family and being in their own home. I highly recommend St. Josephs Residence for the Elderly Poor. A facility that consistently, year after year, receives a 5-star rating from the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health and Nursing Home Oversight.

They have so many wonderful activities and events going on around the home. I couldn't imagine a better place for my Loved one. They really are there and never leave the residents side when they are ill or dying. No one dies alone in that home. Is a very beautiful thing to witness.

Supposed to provide wound care to my husband 3 times per week. They complain about lack of respect…read morefrom me because I am not afraid to call them out on their shortcomings. Difficult to extract info. from them, they make snap decisions without listening to family & aides (said my husband was incoherent and discounted aide saying he hadn't even been awake for 10 minutes), decided he was sweaty and had low bp but didn't wait 5 min & retry bp on other arm & aide said he was not sweaty - his clothes were dry but his head looked damp because she had just wiped his face & head & applied skin cream - all factors considered & knowing we are trying to transfer to hospice, nurse calls ambulance and sends him to ER. Nurse at his primary care told me his bp wasn't even that low. My dau & the aide said the HHC nurse looked like she was just trying to get out of the house. So he was subjected to ambulance trip to & from ER, hours in ER & even they couldn't figure out why he was there. This is just one of MANY issues with their incompetence, lack of care for patient/family, inability to listen and communicate.

They just keep getting worse and worse. It's probably because of the doctor shortage. When I…read moreactually get the chance to see one they are pretty good, but try getting an appointment! I called in today for knee pain and I would have to wait a month to see someone. They refused to give me an appointment with anyone but my PCP, because my call wasn't urgent enough, so they told me to go to the ER, which is supposed to be for emergencies. Anyway, I called September 27th and I couldn't get an appointment until 10/22 or else go to the other side of the state. I told them to forget it since I'm moving out of state on 10/16. I gave them 2 stars because they are pretty good if they take you. The problem is availability.
