Ever wanted to see a coal mine? Here's your chance. This is a great activity to take grade school and up children. Heck I was in college and I still found it fascinating since I am the granddaughter of a coal miner. I never met him; he died in a mine before I was born. The very beginning when you walk in the antiquated dusty gift shop to get yoru ticket makes you wonder if you want to go on this little excursion into a coal mine. You do. Just get past the dusty and creepiness. And don't buy any candy that is as antique as the coal equipment you're looking at. Creepy gift shop is why I am detracting a star. The tour itself is awesome and five stars. The owner was also our tour guide. Wear Jeans! and good solid close toed shoes/boots with tread. No cowboy boots. You will be given a hard hat. After a brief talk, you slide into a covered, low slung, underground train and begin your descent into the mine. You'll get out of the underground coal miner train and learn quite a lot about how a coal mine works. Watch your head, You'll have to walk hunched over through a few places. Of course the annoying yuppie soccer mom who kept squealing when water dripped on her plowed her head into the ceiling while taking more pictures of her kids. It was nice to be able to go behind a ceiling beam and snicker at her in the dark. Overall, Its a great learning experience.less than an hour from Pittsburgh.

If you love filling up your October calendar with spooky Halloween activities like I do, it's time…read moreto book your trip to ScareHouse. I love to go with a date and a group of friends. Imagine pulling up to a mall that feels weirdly abandoned and shut down and then being transported to a world of gore, horror, dark magics and sensory excitement! I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll leave some tips below. Tips: -- the earlier you get in the night, the less waiting in line you will do. -- if you like getting the brunt of the scary stuff, try to be the leader of your pack, aka, the one holding the flashlight. -- get into it! Allow yourself to react! Don't try to be tough or a hard a**. The more you scream and react to what you're seeing, smelling, feeling, the better of a time you'll have !

We arrived later in the evening around 7:45 pm and had to wait in line for about a half hour. Since it's a Sunday evening I'd imagine the line length might be a little longer on a Friday or Saturday evening. The Haunted house itself takes about a good half hour to get through and has A LOT of different features throughout. Overall the makeup, staging, and props are very well done and the staff was very professional. Definitely recommend for older kids if you're considering bringing them along, might be too scary for a younger crew. Overall great option in Pittsburgh for a SCARY fun night out as the Halloween season is upon US!

This is a really cool park near Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Target around Upper St. Clair that I…read morelike to stop at whenever I'm in the area. The trail is great for beginners or if you just want a quick jog. There are several benches you can sit down on along the way, plus a tree stump in the woodsy part that you can also sit on to rest. It's a very well maintained trail that smells like freshly cut wood chips, and has a nice variety of terrain. I didn't see any dog poop (it's a no-dog park) and no litter at all, which the multiple trash cans around the loop definitely help with. While a good portion of the trail has the wood chips, some areas could use a bit more. After rain, a few spots can get muddy and it can get a little marshy in the grassy part where there is no trail. The outer loop is about 1.2 miles, and there are several spots where the trail branches off. There's a more "woody" section and a more "grassland" section, which keeps it interesting. It's also not hard to find parking at the church across the street. There's a lot of birds chirping and tons of squirrels and bunnies, and every once in a while you'll spot deer. Inside the barn fence there are lambs and sometimes horses, which is a nice touch. Also kind of cool is that there are wild chive plants around this trail which is common in the Pittsburgh area, and you'll find some growing in the park if you know what to look for.

The old house, and farm are really special, and I am so glad that the Upper St. Clair Historical Society maintains these buildings and property so we can occasionally get to visit and see how things used to be. Today they had all kinds of activities going on, from hayrides, petting zoo, sheep shearing, cow milking, yarn spinning, beekeeping, and of course tours of the historic house, barn and outbuildings, all of which are like a museum. This place was well worth the price of admission . . . FREE, but the suggested donation was $5 per person.
