I saw Taking Back Sunday here last weekend. After reading the reviews on here I was a bit skeptical for my first time at the Tower Theater. My friend and I LOVED it. It had an older feel and I did not feel nearly as unsafe as some of these reviews suggest. The parking was easy and ten dollars (which is cheap if you consider how much it costs to park at the Wells Fargo or Philles and Eagles Stadiums). The food and beer were a bit overpriced (four dollars for a soft pretzel!) but that's what you have to expect at concerts. We were in the back right orchestra in row four, at the farthest end of the row but still had a GREAT view. I would definitely suggest this venue if you want a more intimate experience with a band. read more

The focus may be on the new shinier venues like The Met and Union Transfer, but the Tower can't be beat in terms of sound, seating and a long haul history. Recently voted one of America's top live venues, it's easy to hear why. I also love the array of Vietnamese and Thai food just around the corner, not to mention the awesome H-Mart food court, but would it kill Upper Darby to bring in a decent place to get a beer, maybe a brewery even? read more

Just saw my favorite band here, for the 11th time, but my first here. I had always thought Tower was in Philly proper. A cab ride from Xfinity Live was around $30. My friends and I didn't want to scour for parking or pay for a garage. This was also my first concert with seat assignments in a while. A long while. The seats we chose were pretty good, and security is strict about it. We had our tickets checked at least once, but that didn't stop two of us from running down the aisle for closer deep breath of awesome. We were shortly booted back to our designated spots. Le sigh. The set up is a little odd. On the one hand, it's nice that people who want to drink don't have to stay in a closed off section. On the other, you have to produce ID each time you want a beer. Speaking of beer, though, there is a good selection. Really, I don't recall all the options. I was pleasantly surprised that the bar had Walt Whitman on tap, and that served me just fine. $8 for a 16oz and $12 for a 22oz. The music sounded pretty good at Tower. It's such an unassuming operation from the outside. I don't think I'd trek out here for any performance unless I had my heart set on it though. read more

Seeing Haim was my first time at the Tower Theatre. Maybe it was because the band absolutely rocked, but the venue couldn't have been better. Even though it's a moderate hike to get to from CC, the Septa was incredibly easy, since the venue is only steps away from the 69th Street station. The venue itself was a breeze- will call was right when we walked in the door, and the staff members were really kind. Plenty of room by the bar, which was a full bar, so it met everyone's needs. My only complaint is that the bathroom facilities could be upgraded. Once we entered the room to see the concert, I was even more impressed. The intricate decor contributes to a really cool atmosphere. It's great that they removed the lower level seating to allow for GA - makes it way easier to coordinate going to shows with other people. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future shows at the Tower Theatre - can't wait to go back. read more

They did not sell enough tickets on the upper balcony, so they closed it for the show and downgraded my tickets to the back of the theater where the acoustics were poor I could hear the bar for the opening act and the light is also a distraction. Parking was easy for $5 up the street, but I could see how it would be difficult if it were a popular show. read more

Making a buck at the bar is more important to the Tower Theater than respect for the music. Would not return! Went to see Ray LaMontagne on 11/17/12. Ray was awesome, so this review has nothing to do with the performer, but rather the venue. Quite frankly, they seem to be more concerned with selling booze than providing an appropriate concert atmosphere. The bar in the lobby was left open during the performance, so people were constantly getting up and heading for the lobby and returning to their seats during the show (in the middle of a song). The ushers made no effort to restrict people from returning to their seats during a song and in fact aided audience members in doing so. Our enjoyment of Ray's beautiful music was frequently interrupted by us having to get up to let people into our row or by people in front of us doing the same and blocking our view. While this may be acceptable at a rock concert, Ray's performance was an acoustic duet and many of his songs are slow, soft, and emotional. Having people constantly moving around completely killed the atmosphere. read more

I just left the Cat Stevens concert tonight and have to say yet again the Tower theater has provided excellent security and service. The people who work there are considerate and diligent and should be commended to hold down a crowd while remaining respectful and kind. It's so great to find a place for people hire people who know what they're doing. This sounds like I've been hired to write this let me assure you I have not been inspired like this in a long time everyone was so respectful and did such a good job I really appreciate the Tower theater helping everyone have an amazing concert experience. I am incredibly proud phobic and for some reason the Tower theater people person now understand the special needs of folks and handle it with professionalism. I hate this joint. The sound can be iffy and if you get out after midnight you have to take a bus or taxi since the EL shuts down at midnight. I have seen some great shows here and I think they have fixed it up some since I was a kid but i'm just not a big fan of this place. read more

If you are attending a popular or sold out event at this theater: do not drive. The traffic in/near/around 69th Street and Chestnut Street in Upper Darby was insufferable and we almost missed the show, despite getting to the block the theater is on 40+ minutes ahead of time. The parking garage is shady - definitely don't leave anything on the floor of your car - and when an event here is sold out, leave yourself an hour or more just to park once you're within eyesight of the theater - again, only drive if you must. The theater is much bigger inside than I anticipated - even in the tippy top back rows, we enjoyed seeing comedian John Oliver. Great for a comedian, but I probably wouldn't see a concert here for anything other than a mellow band, because you'd be confined to small seat. The line to get inside 5-10 minutes after showtime was a little surprising, but moved quickly. Although it appeared clean/not terribly worse for the wear, the venue actually smelled a little bit like vomit (?) although the bathrooms were clean enough. Unless there is literally no other show on a tour I must see, I probably will never ever come near this theater ever again. It was a cool, historic looking theater, but definitely not one I'd seek out again, partly because of the location and partly because of the traffic/smell. read more

I went with a friend to see a show (Regina Spektor) and the venue itself was amazing! Parking wasn't bad because it is right around the corner and there is a path at the end of the lot that leads you RIGHT to the building. The prices are not as bad as other venues for drinks. The staff was very nice and helped us to our seats quickly as well. The sound was amazing and the seats were very comfortable. Overall, it is a great experience and I would definitely see another show there again. read more

First time for me at the Tower and I'll admit that prior to going here some Yelpers' reviews had me a little panicky about: car break-ins, traveling in groups for safety and unfriendly staff at the Tower. I found none of these to be an issue. Parking is around the corner for $10 and attendants were polite; car was fine when we returned. Safety? Unless you're 10 blocks out and traveling on foot, no worries here. Staff? Totally fine, ushered us to our seats. read more

I went in with high expectations for the venue given the price I had paid to attend. Throughout the entire night, the staff was rude and difficult. If they were trying to ruin the attendee's experience, they succeeded! The space itself was cramped and ill-equipped to deal with our group. The food and drinks were absurdly subpar. I saw Radiohead at the Tower Theater. Yeah, Radiohead. I saw Belle and Sebastian there too... but... Radiohead. Seriously. Anyway, the place is beautiful and well laid out. It is, however, a pain in the ass to get to and situated in a really crap part of town. There's lots of parking nearby, and you can find parking in the city. Acoustics are not great below the balcony, but the sound is pretty good overall and it's small enough that all the seats are good. Oh... and Radiohead. read more

This place is a dilapidated, dirty, firetrap! We had exits on either side of our row but since it was so packed with people, I sat there thinking there's no way we would all get out without being trampled. Scary! The bathrooms are in the basement which is creepy. There was some guy selling shots in the men's bathroom. The folding chairs were padded but not comfortable at all, as they are positioned at an odd angle. People were standing and this is a seated concert. You need to sit down so the people behind you can see! The acoustics are bad too. The neighborhood is scary. I felt like I had to watch, so we didn't get mugged, walking back to our car in the nearby dirty, falling-apart, old parking garage that cost $20. It's open so anyone can walk through and it was totally unattended when we got back to our car. There were homeless people obviously living there too. Very sad. I will never go to The Tower Theater again. read more

Handicap people - BEWARE! Very disappointed with this venue! We went to a show and the experience was horrible! I was on crutches from having ruptured Achilles surgery. Our tickets were purchased back in September! I was forced to stand in a long line with pushy, rude and impatient concert goers. When asked if there was a handicap entrance I was told to stand and wait like everyone else! There was not one chair in the lobby area for me to wait while my husband went to park the car. Finally my husband decided to leave after driving around for over 45 mins looking for parking. When I walked myself out, the lady at the entrance was more concerned with making sure I knew that I couldn't re enter when clearly I was trying to make my way out while on crutches. read more

I went to a party with friends at Tower Theater last night. Awful time. I'm so upset and disappointed. Security was ridiculous. Many of my friends who are of age and had valid IDs were refused drinks and/or kicked out of the party (not that they missed much). Those who weren't drinking were segregated from the rest of the guests; I couldn't see my date for most of the party. Guards would interrupt conversations and stop people dancing to check wristbands and IDs. Drinks were not allowed at dinner. At one point in the night when I was sick in the restroom, my date tried to enter the men's room to give me water and take care of me; she was forcibly stopped by security in case she was trying to share drinks with me. I understand that underage drinking is illegal, but Tower Theater should have explained to us the measures they would be taking to prevent it; instead, they deceived us into purchasing the open bar and did everything they could to stop people (including those of age!) from drinking, maximizing profit. Not only was security ridiculously overzealous, but Tower Theater lied to us about many aspects of their services. The open bar was severely under-stocked and lacked the variety and quality we were promised; many basic bar essentials were missing including dark beer and bottled wine. Hors d'oeuvres were a small table of cheese, crackers, and ham; while underwhelming, this was the best food offered the entire night. However, it was quickly ushered away once "dinner" started. Tower Theater charged in-advance $80 per-plate for what turned out to be cafeteria-grade microwaved garbage. This included warm roast-beef coldcuts and reheated "baked ziti" that had definitely never seen an oven. There were no vegan options except a pile of mostly-raw broccoli and cauliflower. Guests had to serve themselves dinner on plastic plates with plastic utensils, which ran out well before everyone had taken food. Everything was inedible. And again, drinks were not allowed at dinner. Desert was all I had left to look forward to; our party planner assured us he purchased the catering package with cannolis for desert. Disappointingly, the cannolis were completely absent from the desert table. Instead, we were served macaroons and small cheesecake-like cylinders, many of which were different colors despite tasting identical. Clearly, we did not receive the food and drink we paid for. Tower Theater advertised to us a theater space and a dance floor when we booked the venue. The former had its entrances hidden and blocked off; not a single guest made their way into the theater the entire night. The latter was not a ballroom or party space, but the theater lobby with a DJ booth wheeled in. The only reason there was room to dance was because security kicked out a quarter of our guests. While it is one of my smaller complaints, its worth noting that there is no cell service in the entire building. This was an awful night. We were ripped off, yelled at, exploited, segregated, and treated like children by Tower Theater. Don't ruin your event; hold it somewhere else. read more

This theater is ok. Its dated but I didn't get a dingy vibe from it. The sound was good and I enjoyed the concert I attended. The women's bathroom situation is a nightmare. There are ladies rooms downstairs and on the upper balcony, but be prepared to stand in a long line. They are clean however! I hope they have bathrooms for people with disabilities on the ground floor since each bathroom requires lots of stairs, so keep that in mind if you have trouble walking. The staff all seemed to enjoy their job and were helpful with any questions. I would suggest they up their security a little, given the times we live in. I was asked to open one section of my multi-zippered bag where the attendant shined a flashlight in. I was then asked if I had anything in my pockets and sent on my way when I said no. It would have been easy to have weapons strapped to me and in different zippered parts of my bag. I'm sure people would complain about the wait, but I think metal detectors/wanding would be a good idea. The lax security would be my only reservation about coming back here to see a show. The most helpful piece of information I can convey is this: if you drive, pay the $20 and park on the parking deck on the corner of Chestnut St. and Heather Rd. (IHOP is the landmark) It puts you kind of in the back of the theater and you can walk through a well lit alley with other concert goers to the theater, which is only a few steps from the alley. The area is a little sketch, so I think staying close and staying with the crowd is beneficial. No one hassled me, but I would not want to linger nearby once the crowd dissipated. read more

I had a very unpleasant experience here for a private event where we rented out the theater. They had us only in the bar area and we were not even allowed to see the theater stage. It felt cramped and the venue did not look like the pictures on their website. We had paid for top shelf open bar but they served us wine from a box! Really?! We were not allowed to drink during the dinner time even though we paid for an open bar for the entire night. Overall bad venue to hold a private event and seemed like it has gone downhill since it's peak years. Wish I could give negative stars. read more

This is a pretty swank place that is now totally incongruous with the area it's in. I wouldn't come hang out in front of the Tower Theater on a non-show night just for kicks, but when a good band is here, it feels perfectly safe - I came to see Further, and there was a solid security presence to keep the hippies in line. It's easily accessible via the El, too, which is nice for environmentally conscious hippie-types. Also because I have seen lots of these guys drive and every effort should be made to keep them off the road. The 60s killed brain cells, people. Inside, Tower Theatre has an air of aging grandeur. It has the feel of a classic old theater - molding, rich colors, beautiful architecture. A little weird to come here to see a bunch of old hippies jam out, but weird in a cool way. Especially when they flash the light show on the ceiling. Downsides: Even before the show began, the bathrooms were a mess. They're small, awkwardly laid out, and a mess waiting to happen. I imagine that toward the end of the night, there were a lot of ladies relying on the communal hippie spirit to get toilet paper passed down to them. Also they charged me $4 for a mediocre soft pretzel. For serious, dudes? There is price gouging and then there is YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR GODDAMN MINDS. I've been to the Tower Theater a few times - concerts mostly, and more recently, a showing of Bob's Burgers Live (dork central, yes, I know.) I love this place for a few reasons - the location right at the end of the Market Frankford Line is convenient for public transportation, from the city, the main line or Media. The venue itself is huge, but even way up in the balcony, you get a great view of the stage. The acoustics are perfect, and they do some great lighting for concerts. When the place is packed, the energy can be intoxicating. And while many people stand for the duration of a show, the fact that you have your own seat is clutch (especially for us 31 year olds). Downsides are it is a little tight when everyone is seated in a full row. I'm not a small person, but think I'd have issues if I were much bigger. Also, drinks are super pricey, more than other venues in Philly. Also, if you're not taking public transit and drive out, parking is pretty limited and the area can be a bit of a cluster to drive around looking. But all in all, a great spot to see a show in town. Always on the lookout for the next one. read more

The Tower is a wonderful classic music venue, host to countless bands and acts dating far back in the 20th Century. It seems they have recently made sound improvements, but have preserved the overall art deco character of the building. As Philly venues go, the Upper Darby neighborhood has a TON of food options, primarily small mom and pop Asian places, including Vietnamese and Thai, as well as a hidden away pan African restaurant, and a host of old school Irish bars. Parking and traffic are terrible during events, so if you're coming from out of town, use the EL or the Norristown High Speed Line to 69th St. As far as the comments about felling unsafe, it's statistically one of the safest urban areas of Philly, be sensible and ignore the Beckys. read more

Saw Todd Rundgren here a few months back. I thought it would be fun to see Todd perform on his home turf as he's from Upper Darby originally, plus this was a short easy drive for me. My biggest worry was where to park in the run-down area so that me and my car would stay unmolested. After driving around a few blocks I realized the Tower Theater pay parking garage was my best bet as it had attendants and there didn't seem to be anyplace else on the main or side streets to park (all parked up). It cost a few dollars but seems like every venue in Philadelphia requires you to pay 10-20 bucks for parking. My only problem was that I was a little late for the gig, so almost everybody else was already inside and the only way I could see to get to the theater involved climbing down a deserted, unlit, partially broken, narrow garage staircase leading to an alley which led to the block containing the theater, and it was after dark. There may be another way into the theater but I couldn't find it and was in a hurry not to miss more of the show, so I decided to brave the scary stairs. Near the bottom i was accosted by a group of people and almost jumped out of my skin till I realized it was a perfectly normal family of local moms and kids returning from a shopping trip. I reached the doorway of the venue without further incident. Inside it was a fine old slightly-run-down place and none of the staff were obnoxious or bothered me at all. In fact there were hardly any staff around. Maybe 2-3 people, one of whom was guarding the door and one hanging out in the lobby. It was extremely dark in the theater (to the point where I almost couldn't find my seat) which kept me from fully appreciating how awesome and historic it looked. Todd did a good show and even talked about shows he'd seen at the Tower when he lived nearby, which has to be 40-50 years ago now. The sound was fine (I was maybe 15 rows from the front). The light show that was part of the show was also fine. I didn't happen to use the bathrooms so I can't comment on that. After the show I had no problem getting to my car because like i said, everybody else parked in the same garage and you could walk back to the garage with a large chatty crowd. I did notice a couple of showgoers walking off down a side street and there were some shady looking dudes around so i hope those folks got home OK. There was about a half hour traffic jam getting from the garage back to Rt. 3 to exit. Moral of the story is, if you're coming to a show here arrive when everybody else is arriving and leave when everybody else is leaving, you should be OK. Same deal if you're making the short walk from the 69th street subway terminal to the venue (subway is sadly not an option for me as I live in an area served only by bus, and am not going to hang around after dark at the outdoor bus stops at that station). read more

This is the best venue for concerts in the Philadelphia area. Period. The acoustics are otherworldly. It's like you are sitting in a recording studio listening to the show. The clarity is incredible. It has a ton of charm as you approach it and on the inside as well. Two nice bars on the inside with decent beer prices when compared to other inferior venues. The only complaint I have pertaining to the actual venue is the seats. They could definitely use an upgrade in the padding department. They can get a bit uncomfortable. Not a bad viewpoint in the house though. And the only other complaint is the traffic flow before the show. The township of Upper Darby could definitely play with the lights to create a better flow into the lot. But any aggravation created by the commute to the Tower will be quickly erased as soon as you enter musical heaven. read more

Best music venue in Philadelphia. I previously hadn't been here in almost 15 years to see Oasis with my cousin. With that said, and at that age, couldn't appreciate such an awesome place to see a show. I appreciate and prefer smaller venues over larger stadium shows and festivals. It's significantly better to see a band in a more intimate setting. The decorative and ornate nature of the theater feels like you've stepped back in time and there's not a bad seat in the house, literally. Transportation to and from couldn't be simpler via the MFL line with a 2 minute walk from 69th St Station to the venue. A stop pre or post show at the Waterford Inn is also a must. HAIM rocked. Completely surprised and impressed. read more

Came to Tower for Death Cab for Cutie tonight. Show was great but mainly I'm reviewing the staff who were exceptionally accommodating and kind. I've been on crutches for a few days and upon arrival I was approached and asked if I wanted to upgrade to orchestra seats. I wasn't sure it would work since we had 4 people in our group but he got us a spot. Once there we realized yet another person would be in our group and talked with another staff member who helped secure an extra seat, move the entire row over to allow us a better view, and allow our final friend to join us. Overall it was a terrific experience. Great venue, great show, courteous staff. I'm very thankful for how well we were treated and will definitely look for opportunities to come back again. read more

Don't book this venue for any kind of event. It's way overstaffed, the alcohol is terrible, management will straight up lie to you and overblow expectations, it's way too expensive for what it is, the smoking area is small and feels cramped and isolated, the catering we were promised sucked, and the event felt like a constant harassment. Take your business elsewhere. read more

Absolutely ridiculous. Seems like the staff went out of their way to make our private event as bad as possible. At one point, I was told I couldn't speak to my friends that were holding alcoholic drinks just because I was underage! Why would I ever pay money to attend an event with friends only to be yelled at for trying to communicate with them? I have never been so patronized by employees. At another time, I came up the stairs from the bathroom and was looking at my phone, and an employee physically grabbed me to check if I had a wristband and to stop me from walking towards the bar area. I wasn't even trying to! Since I wasn't allowed to approach the main bar area, I had to have someone else get me water, which took over three minutes. The table for hors d'oeuvres and desserts, as well as the buffet for dinner, were in inconvenient locations that made retrieving food (to put on my plastic plate!) extremely difficult. Once I grabbed food, I was just surrounded by people waiting on line and I could not even get to the eating area. Would not recommend to anyone, and would rate zero stars if I could. I never realized how much a bad venue and bad employees could ruin an event. read more

I enjoyed the venue....but the area that it's located in is a ROUGH area. Can be pretty intimidating. There is a garage located at the end of the street behind a Ross store. Also parking in the Septa lot on 69th street for like 2 dollars. Good acoustics and view of the stage. read more

Sigh. After allowing my sister into the show for hours with her draw-string backpack (which just had her epi-pen in it), a security guard noticed she had an "illicit" bag RIGHT before the headliner came on and literally dragged her out of the theater to the security area. She showed him the epi-pen and this guard said she could keep the pen but not the bag that held it...after explaining to him several times she had no pockets, she just walked away. And he grabbed her by her shoulders and pushed her out into the street. I told him he should take a moment to evaluate what he'd just done and stormed out myself. Not okay. read more

This review is very long overdue since it's been awhile since I've been, so I'll keep it short: Really enjoyed the venue--the sound was good, and no matter where you sit you can see the stage well. Nice, intimate place for shows. Location: Pretty terrible and frankly I won't be going back just for this reason. We parked in one of the garages right behind the venue, assuming this would be safer than just a side street/etc. Guess what? Upon return, nearly every car's windows were smashed in. I wish I was kidding; everyone stood there with their mouths gaped open. We, somehow, got lucky that our car wasn't broken into, even though my car is relatively new-ish. My best guess is that because we leave nothing out on the seats or floor of my car, the thieves didn't see anything to grab. When you pay an attendant to park in a garage, you assume someone will be sticking around to deter this type of crime. No such luck--not a security guard or attendant in sight once the show was over. (By the way, if you read some of the other reviews, including the filtered reviews, you will see that this is a common occurrence. I haven't been in awhile so I would be curious to see if this issue has been addressed.) 4.5 stars for the venue, 0 for location/security in the venue area. read more

Do not travel to this venue. It is not worth it at all. If you live in the area, fine. The location is awful: limited parking, no good restaurants. The venue was so disorganized, the acoustics were bad and smelled horribly of cigarette smoke. We paid the same amount for our seats as our friends in the same section and they were FOLDING CHAIRS. I saw Haim at the Tower Theater on 5/14/14. Getting there was incredibly easy, I paid $10 and parked in the garage in the rear of the theater. I loved the feel of the small venue, seats were comfortable, and the performance was fantastic. Others have complained about the lack of room for dancing if you're in a seated section, I did not think there was a problem at all, it was a very lively crowd and nobody seemed to have an issue. Others have also stated that they felt unsafe walking to and from the venue, I didn't at all even though the area could give off a "sketchy vibe". As can be expected, food and drink are way overpriced. My only complaint is that the music was way too loud, the volume of the instruments made it hard to hear the vocals which was unfortunate. Edit: Original review was four stars, but after having multiple problems with false charges and weird deposits on my debit card (even after getting a new card!) and finding it nearly impossible to reach anyone to help me with the problem, I lowered it to a one star. I definitely will not be returning. read more

I saw Jill Scott and feist at this theater. The sound was great. I noticed the architecture of the building more when I went to go see feist, and from what I saw, it looked ambient and very kept up. The tickets were easy to get a hold of and the music that was placed in the common space was very memorable, wish I had shazam then to find out what it was. Shouldn't be disappointed. read more

This place was below expectations in every single way. Had a college formal event here, they gave everyone a massive hassle about IDs, and went so far as kicking multiple people out of the venue within the first half hour (we payed over 100 per person for a half hour?!?) Then, they took it a step farther and literally sectioned off the dance floor to separate 21+ from under 21, which is completely unacceptable for any sort of event. Speaking of price, this place was massively overpriced for what was there. The drinks weren't great (they served box wine, classy amirite), food tasted like it was from the frozen aisle and the staff was unfriendly to say the least. The theatre staff is unfriendly, and just plain rude. The orchestra seating is terrible. If the person on the inside needs to use the restroom, prepare for the entire row to stand and walk into the aisle so the person can exit the row. You are given zero legroom and and uncomfortable folding chair. Why anyone would want to watch anything here is beyond me. Also as a bonus, the neighborhood is terrible. Good luck avoiding a mugging on the way to your car. read more
