But as people on the island insisted on dying, the non sectarian cemetery kept expanding until it's now almost ten acres It use to have a cool entrance on the west side but since the new highway was built the only way to really get into the graveyard is now from the south and Cedar Lane. The cemetery is very quiet and unassuming. Most of the memorials are small and modest, no huge obelisks or gigantic and ostentatious gravesites. Just very quiet reminders of who was here in days past.

The Preservation Society has alerted the city about this and hopefully something will be done to bring this back to its former glory. Some of the history behind this historical cemetery, in 1834, the Grace Episcopal Church purchased more than four acres of land on the South side of Providence for use as a burial ground. By 1843, the site encompassed nine acres within the triangular-shaped, 8500+ plot cemetery at the intersection of Broad Street and Elmwood Avenue, the gateway to the south side of Providence. From its original inception, the cemetery was designed with great care and attention to detail. All of the burial plots were arranged symmetrically, in diamond-shaped sections separated by avenues named after trees. "Cemetery Square" occupies the center of the cemetery and is marked by a small, diamond-shaped area. Between 1859 and 1860, a house in the Gothic Carpenter style was built on the property to serve as a caretaker's lodge. This cemetery has great historical significance, as the backgrounds of many interred in the Grace Church Cemetery represent the growth and development of this section of the City of Providence. Various groups are represented, including mill workers, veterans of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, as well as World Wars I and II, political and church leaders, and representation from the Armenian community. An independent archivist has estimated that there are 256 veteran burials in Grace Church Cemetery.

And this cemetery is maintained by very nice people. Everyone who works here that I have encountered or even watched I noticed how gentle and caring they are with the grounds. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember and I always remember just how clean everything always ways. I believe in order to bury your family member here they have to be Catholic, just something to keep in mind. Consider this cemetery for any passing family members. I know this is such a tough topic, and it was a little hard for me to write, but I know it will be worth it for others.

Most of the grave stones are dated in the 17 and 1800's it's truly a wonderful place to take your time and read some of the stones. The Bristol Family's from Dewolfs and wardwells. I'm sure it would be a great learning experience to tour with a guide to find out about the history . There is also a beautiful view at sunset overlooks the bay in the winter where I have experienced amazing colors as the sun sets. It's definitely a trip to take.

Hidden gem alert!…read more Amazing stone structures greet you as you enter this stunning cemetery, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. I happened upon Juniper Hill while taking a brisk walk at lunch. I'm so glad I did! It's obvious that the caretakers love the property as every tree and stone is well cared for. Some of the tree species I have never seen before. Coming around the last bend, there are amazing views of the entire downtown area of Bristol. The sunsets must be amazing! I found out later that the caretaker offers historical tours, botanical tours and a special Halloween tour once annually! I will definitely be back for that!

They keep the grounds very clean here , and they don't just throw your precious decorations out immediately they allow your decorations to your loved ones to stay for a little bit. It's a little hard to navigate on your own for the first time , but if you go to the main office they will help you out give you a map or guide you. The chapels are beautiful ! I attended a burial here and it was very beautiful , they made a sad moment into something understanding and accepting. The family who runs this are very nice. The stones are very pretty and the upkeep makes me very happy. Cemetery's that are well kept are hard to find, but this one is one of them. There's a lot of water surrounding , if you do want to stay around and walk around ( I have numerous family members here. ) There's a church directly next to this site as well with its own lot, if you want to attend church.

There are some broken stones and I don't like that the stones that are flat to the ground get covered over with cut grass and leaves. I'm afraid that they might disappear entirely. There are lots of roads through the cemetery and places where you can stop and walk. It's really beautiful with all of the old trees. I only go in here to take pictures to put online for people doing the genealogical research. I love Cemeteries and this is a really nice one.

A place to…read morerest The Greenwood Cemetery was established in 1858, which means it is an old graveyard but certainly not a really ancient cemetery by New England standards. Many of the graves do date back well over a hundred years but the cemetery is still accepting new arrivals. A very nice combination of extremely dated and worn graves and monuments combined with nice new and shiny ones. Many of the headstones are very cool and unique. Some huge obelisks and tombs right next to very simple crosses that are now impossible to read. All kinds of very personal and distinctive ways of remembering people now gone from this world. A very peaceful place that is quiet, scenic and at the same time historical. A relaxing place to visit a loved one now departed or to just wander around the many old graves and wonder about the people now at rest.

Stones rocks and…read morewalls The Old Burial Ground is sometimes called the Town Hall Cemetery, probably because it is located right behind the town hall. Actually the graveyard was here first because the lovely town hall was built in 1890 and most of the graves in the cemetery are much older than that. The old cemetery is small and has lots of very cool stone walls surrounding it and some trees and bushes actually growing right among the gravestones. Gives it a very rustic feel. Virtually all of the graves were from the 1800s but I did see a few from the 1700s and of course several were impossible to read and probably much older. A small, strange little graveyard that is located right behind the stunning Swansea Town Hall and some pleasant hiking trails. A great place to see lots and lots of rocks and walls.
