Vandalia Rail Trail - The family walking our dogs, Baxter and Casey. Nice area of the trail where it's flat most of the time and has occasional shade.

Most of the folks I encounter are friendly and polite with a lot of dog walkers, runners and bikers. Each of the trails intersect with another trail making it easy to explore Plainfield or stay away from the congestion of the world. If you enjoy spending time in nature, you'll enjoy Vandalia Trail. Spend a few hours exploring all the trails to find your favorite route throughout Plainfield. Vandalia Trail replaced the old Vandalia railroad line. As a child my husband played on and around the Vandalia tracks and I love hearing his childhood memories. Most of the 5 trails have points of interest along the way that can distract you. Vandalia Trail has a great bridge at the intersection of White Lick Trail close to the baseball diamonds at Franklin Park. Just across the bridge is a shaded seating area which is great to meet up with friends and a map of the trails if you get turned around. I often find myself stopping to watch a ballgame at Franklin Park on my way to White Lick Trail. The almost 5 mile trail is a comfortable walk, jog or ride with a few hilly areas. The N. East Street and Aquatic Center hill is probably the steepest but still manageable for most. Much of the trail is shaded with sunlight streaming through the trees and I find very peaceful. You will encounter a few road crossings or under passes, and even though well marked stay vigilante. Vandalia Trail connects with White Lick Trail which takes you to Main St., a.ka. Washington St. or US 40, Al's Doughnuts, Oasis Diner, or Dairy Queen if you're looking for a quick snack or meal. From here continue on to Friendship Park and Hummel Park. Both are beautiful parks and each have their own points of interest worth exploring.

First the website can be a bit weird and if you are getting day passes and it keeps saying its 'timing out' you need to make a Plainfield recs account first and it stops being weird. On my visit i purchased tickets/admission on the website because i could not tell if i could get in on location or not. Once we got thru the check in process we went to see the indoor pools first.... Well they were closed. OK... Went outside and its pretty expansive and clean. One of the non-tube slides was down as well as looks like 1/3rd of the exterior swimming items were down for what looked like cleaning since i saw staff working on it. From the maps view basically the huge lazy river side. As a non-resident the pricing i feel was a good value for goofing off in the water for roughly 3 hours. Onsite food isn't anything to rave about but at least it is available and it was not crazy prices. Tons of life guards doing an awesome job from what i could tell while watching the people watching the rest of us so i felt super safe and confortable they were keeping an eye on all the kids. I didnt grab any photos because i dont really like publishing anything with people in it. You will be pleastly surprised with what is in the water park area let alone the other things you can do here. I am sure i will be back again and again.

Receptionist looks like she's in her 40s giving soooo much attitude, when she should have been giving more information like she did for the previous customer in front of me! She had brochures and everything! Yes I'm convinced they don't want US! Yes Us here! Stay Woke!

Well he overheard a conversation between the girl sitting by the doors to check coolers and some guy she knew (he was being super loud while talking) and he was making racist comments towards Hispanics and she was agreeing with him but trying also not to say anything or talking really quietly (I'm assuming because she was at work) it happened today around 11 it was just very upsetting because I'm Hispanic and she seemed very friendly at first when she spoke to me to check our cooler and even smiled towards us when we were walking from the restrooms back outside. Park is great overall just that one thing that makes me probably not want to go back again. I get people have different opinions but there's a time and a place for things.

There is a section for toddlers (under 5) and another for kids (5-12) but they are right next to each other so that parents can keep an eye on both sides of the area. So much equipment that kids should have a blast trying out each one. Benches and picnic tables can be found all around the playground square, so you can select sunny or shaded relaxation. Oh, and the picnic tables are designed so that a wheel chair can roll under on one end so that guests don't have to worry about climbing over a bench seat. The paths are paved and there is a permanent shelter (with a fire place!) as well as two more canopy type shelters with picnic tables. The grill for the permanent shelter is oversized, so that could make it easier for a grill master. There are sports and activities available too. Tennis, baseball, and horse shoes all have their designated areas. A permanent restroom building lies between the playground area and the ball fields. Another perk is the parking lots are large and paved. For those who like hiking, trails run by the park that are part of the extensive Plainfield system. Sure, there isn't a pool or splash park, but with so much else to do and so much shade, I don't think kids will miss them. Review #606

If you love lots of shade while watching the kids play then you'll enjoy Franklin Park. Named for Charles "Sap" Franklin, the town's first marshal, the park encompasses 35 acres, and like Friendship and Hummel Park, is located along White Lick Creek. This is our 4 year old nieces' favorite park and always want to play here regardless of the weather. This is a great park for family reunions with so many amenities for all ages. Amenities in the park are two shelter houses, 2 lighted tennis courts, a skateboard area, 4 lighted ball diamonds, 2 concession stands, playground and a private play area for little ones under six with a volleyball pit and several horseshoe pits. Easy access to White Lick Creek Trail or Vandalia Rail Trail and the clean restroom at Franklin Park are convenient to trail and water fountains outside restrooms. Plainfield's youth league baseball programs are played on the ball diamonds so stop by and catch a game. Just follow the sounds of the crowd cheering and choose your team.

There is a limited small parking lot available to park and a lone picnic table in a grassy area just in front of the lot. The plaza is marked by the towns iconic pedestrian bridge with the big "P" on it. The park is home to some very nice paved trails that run along White Lick Creek. The trails can be used for biking, walking, and jogging. I saw a large patch of green space that was right across the pedestrian bridge. I am not sure if it is part of the plaza but it is well maintained and could be used for many field activities such as playing catch, soccer, football, ok kite flying. Right next to the diner is an area circular area made of brick that has seating and placards recognizing the plazas sponsors. There are also some placards with the town's history on him in that area as well. If you do not have a bike and want to trek, no problem, the plaza is part of The "Pedal with Plainfield" bike share program and has a kiosk located there. The plaza is home to some of the towns special events such as its annual 4th of July celebration, the Quaker Day Parade and its Popcorn Festival. This is a nice little plaza that is the pride of Plainfield and is very well maintained. They were decorating the area with holiday decorations while I was there. This is not a destination spot, but I nice place to bike or run. It is also a cool place to hang out and pass some time while in Plainfield.
