What it also had, however, were two intrepid chefs wearing bandannas (the sign of a serious chef. Or an unimaginative rapper), who were committed to ladling out colossal bowls of spicy Thai dishes using ingredients fresher than . . . than . . . well, daisies, I suppose. So I panicked and that last analogy suffered terribly, but my point is that now the Thai Noodle Hut has double in size (although it's still just a hole in the wall) and the decor has had an upgrade, but their commitment to the things that made them a Willoughby Rd institution haven't changed -- they're CHEAP, FRESH, and GENEROUS (none of which are words that can be used to describe my last girlfriend). Seriously, the helpings are gigantic, the ingredients are quality, and the prices! Good lord, the prices! It's almost unfair how cheap it is. The staff are friendly as all get out but they're no economists . . . their prices haven't changed since the 90's. In fact, I have no idea how they make money. I'm almost too scared to mention that we're meant to be in a recession in case they weren't aware of this and raise their prices accordingly. Do yourself a flavour and get the Tom Yum Goong spicy prawn soup. It's stuffed full of huge prawns, coriander, button mushrooms and at $10.50 it represents the best value in Australia. Other faves: sweet soy noodle, prawn with salt and pepper and chilli basil noodle.

Perhaps Chilli Jam should worry more about service and less about decoration. The menu is quite interesting, and differs greatly from other Thai restaurants I've visited in Concord. But while they may have more on offer, the quality is no different from the cheaper Thai restaurants on Majors Bay Rd. The food is decent, but seriously overpriced, and the noise level is often unbearable and annoying. The only thing that keeps me coming back to Chilli Jam is the spicy papaya salad. Banchan or Korean sides were served shortly after we ordered. I had them with cooked meat wrapped in lettuce with some ssamjang sauce, they were decent. My beef tongue was sliced thinly with great consistency, so I was definitely happy with that. But the biggest let down for me was the Sliced Raw Beef. It came out half frozen. I can still taste ice in every bite, and the sauce was too sweet. It wasn't pleasant at all. A good first impression I thought. But the judge is still out on whether I would come back.

The service was, I admit, rushed and disjointed, but I'll put the blame onto new staff and stuff. They were all friendly but flustered. The meat was quite good. Although when it comes out, it looks like a tiny portion and that you feel you're getting ripped off, it ends up being quite filling surprisingly. It may be quite expensive ($48 for one combination set which is not a whole lot of meat) but at least it was filling. The sides were plentiful and topped up so that was pleasant. Tip: If you don't mind or enjoy alcohol, you HAVE to try the soju (like a rice wine/liqueur). It's a must when having Korean BBQ. Felt the serving was a little small for the price though. However, would still recommend as it was tasty. Also got the pad thai which was not very hot although should have been a little, but I enjoyed it. It was definitely quite heavy on the sauce and a little too sweet but on this occasion I didn't mind the strong flavours. Nice big serving also. The rice and noodles are definitely good options to fill you up as they were both sufficient servings, and I have to say the fried rice here is really really tasty at that. Always a favourite of mine, with fresh vibrant flavour and that chilli kick. For the main I most enjoyed the morning glory, great song by oasis and a great dish. Don't let the name put you off. A tasty dish of tempura water spinach topped with prawns and fresh salmon roe. The crispy fried spinach, so good. Love it. It appears that the ownership has changed but the quality of food and price is still the same. Can't complain about the price here. One of the place where you get the best value good quality food. We always like their service and time to serve. Sometimes we ordered over the phone if we are too hungry to wait. The food was served just seconds after we arrived. Very impressed.
