Came here with a colleague to have lunch, they have cozy spots to sit outdoors, and you can even bring your dog to hang out with you. I ordered a mozzarella and tomatoes sandwich from the counter, it was good. To drink I ordered ice tea. The decor seemed a bit mid-century meets the-sofa-you grew-up-sitting-on, if you're my age.:) The highlights for us: 37 types of hot cocoa, amazingly flavorful cold cuts, and fresh bread of various persuasions. We seemed to hit the jackpot and only go when hardly anyone else was there. So, I'd say hit them up weekdays around 11am, if you're not keen to dine among throngs of folk. Trachtenvogl offers hot apple ciders (spiked or not) and about a dozen different types of hot chocolates (also has the spiked option). Both were sufficiently sweet and warm to warm up our cores after a rainy and cold day in Munich. The interior is also very homey with mismatched furniture and the candles provide a soft glow to the rooms. This place was highly recommended by a friend and did not disappoint. I recommend booking ahead of time if you want to eat inside as it fills up quickly but we were lucky enough to walk up as people were leaving and opted to eat outside. Our order was taken very quickly and our drinks came out fast as well. The food took a little longer but it was worth the wait. I ordered the Große Frühstück which I strongly recommend if you are looking for a heavily based cheese and meat breakfast. Unfortunately my meal came and it was missing the egg that it came with but once flagged to the waiter it was brought out rather quickly. I would come back again for the food and the atmosphere but do be aware if you are in a time crunch you may need to flag down the waiter as they do have many other tables to tend to. Indeed, the best hot chocolate I've ever had. In Munich? No, ever. I haven't tried too many hot cocoas in Munich (but I have all around everywhere else I find myself)...but of the two (Vitz and Trachtenvogl) I've been mighty impressed. MIGHTY. They do their chocolate up right in Germany. Color me happy and full of chocolate. But first, let me tell you of all the other ways in which Trachtenvogl is so charming. From the sign it appears it might be an old school type cafe, but once entering you'll find yourself transported to something that looks like your stylish grandmother's sitting room. I mean this in the nicest way possible. Retro, pastel mod pieces dot the room providing many cozy nooks and seating areas that facilitate conversation. Things feel...comfortable. Lived in. In a nice way. German landscape paintings and a rack of antlers also speckle the walls, and a geometric chandelier missing one bulb casts light across the space. It's like a secret escape in a bustling part of Munich. A German (of course) gentleman in horn rimmed glasses warmly floats about the space delivering requested drinks at a pace not too fast, not too slow. Everyone is patient and people are chatting and working and studying and reading the newspaper. There are alcoholic drinks as well, of course...the menu quite extensive. They have a dazzling list of hot chocolates, and this is in fact what they are known for. I personally tried the hazelnut, which is basically deconstructed nutella heated up and served in a large mug. My comrades enjoyed the white chocolate blueberry and the salted almond, respectively. All were joyful...truly unexpected, a nice way to take a spin on a classic beverage and try something a little bit different. Definitely find your favorite...I'll continue to do my research during my stay in Munich, you can be assured. It will be added to my favorites list. Of all the coffee shops we popped by in Munich (and on a 2-day hunt for the rare and elusive internet beast, our coffee shop count was plentiful), Trachtenvogl was by far my favourite. Designed with traveling internet-hunters in mind, the shop not only serves the mandatory basics of coffee, tea, and, I don't know... 50+ kinds of hot chocolate, but it also offers up delicious sustenance like toasts, sandwiches, yogurt and granola pots, muffins, cakes... enough sweet and savoury treats to keep you happy and connected as much to the internet as you are to your task at hand. The seating ranges from large communal desks to couches to working tables, and even after plugging in and tucking into a 3+ hour work session, not once did I feel that 'get out or buy more s**t' feeling that so often accompanies shops with strong coffee and even stronger internet. So far I've been here twice and I've never been disappointed. 1. Have been here on a weekend afternoon, it can be quite busy. Their chocolate cake looks dry but believe me, it's not! It's absolutely melt in your mouth! 2. Was there today (Easter Monday) and they always stick to their hours of 9:00 to 22:00. However if it is a public holiday and you want to get a table (note they do not take reservations) for breakfast/brunch, it is best to get there before 10:00. We had Weißwurst with Breze and sweet mustard. There are only two sausages but you can order extra if you like. We also shared the Bergfrühstück which had lots of lovely meats and cheeses. Other pluses are that there is free wifi and the connection is very good. There coffee is also very good - so good in fact that I didn't even have to add sugar to my cappuccino. Also, although I've not experienced it, I believe, in the evenings they do host live music. An absolutely chill and cosy café that I will definitely return to in the future. read more

This is such a quaint little cozy cafe with a homey feel. Hubby and I were craving eggs for brekkie and Trachtenvogl fulfilled that craving. I got a delicious fresh squeezed OJ to enjoy with my meal and my hubby got a coffee. The eggs were full of ham and tomato. It was a generous portion of eggs. They do have an English menu and when we were there, the server spoke English very well, so don't be afraid to ask for one. Also, I think the hot chocolate is delicious because the German kids across the room from us seemed to enjoy it a lot! read more

I was really dying for a coffee this day and a friend suggested this place. When we got there it was pretty full and there was no place to seat. But, when we were about to leave, a very friendly couple asked us to seat at their table. I ordered a Caffè Latte and my friend ordered a Hot Chocolate. But taking our order took a very long time, since the waitress kept forgetting about us... There are pretty different seating places there: very big and very small tables, different kinds of chairs, and even sofas to sit on. I found the place very comfortable and pleasant to stay. I was really impressed by the several types of Hot Chocolate they have. Next time, I am definitely trying one of those, as well as food, which seemed very tasty. read more

A day of walking around in the deceivingly chilly March sunshine necessitated a pit stop for what I was assured would be a hot chocolate to change my life. Mid-afternoon on a Saturday proved to be quite a bustling place. Lots of Germans wanting to get their chocolate/caffeine/baked goods on. No matter, we were still able to squeeze into the the end of a table and rest our weary soles from a morning of walking around, window shopping, and soup-eating. Two hot chocolates and one (FREE) wifi connection later, we were sailing away on a chocolatey boat, smiles on our faces and warmth in our bellies. For me? The chocolate caramel wiith rice crisps. For those wondering, those seem to be THE Cocoa Krispies floating in the foam. Good call! (Additionally, at the end of my cup, I noticed the chocolate/caramel remainder sloshing around. I totally sipped it, knowing it was rich, way too sweet, and probably going to give me a cavity. Totally worth it, sorry Dr. Salk!) Walking into Trachtenvogl is like being transported to a cozy Brooklyn cafe on a chilly fall evening; I had mulled apple juice with cinnamon, and it was both delicately-flavored and warming. After reading the below reviews I realize I should have had a slice of cake or some food, but unfortunately I'd arrived already full; something to look forward to next time! Couch. I love couch. I love couch even more when there are many couches for us all to relax on. Sitting in chairs is for the peasants. Circle the couches around a coffee table and - KERBLAM! - you got yourself a nice little evening. Or a laidback afternoon. Or, if you're a before-nooner, an inviting morning. A chicken in every pot, and a couch in every parlor, I say! Lo and behold, Trachtenvogl is FULL of couches! It's like, three or four parlors up in that crib, yo! Plus, there's also a television set that is programmed in the evenings to play a fireplace picture, which brings the comfy factor up to the next level. Check it. But this place isn't all upholstery and lacy grandma doilies. People don't cram this Kneipe on Friday and Saturday evenings because they're browsing for furniture. Trachtenvogl serves some delicious drinks too. I recommend the house lemonade, but be sure to sample and experiment with all their drinks. I've occasionally made the bartender's life a little harder by ordering my own drink recipe, and they've fulfilled those wishes, so if you're willing to leave good tips, you might build the same rapport with the bar folks too. This place does get pretty chock full o' folks as the evening wears on, so I recommend getting here early with friends, getting your drink on, and then bouncing to one of the other myriad options available in the Fraunhofer/Glockenbachviertel area. And if you're still going strong the next morning, come back home to one of the couches and order a hot chocolate. They make a mean hot chocolate here. read more

The photos people have posted for Trachtenvogl truly do it no justice. Many of the dishes may not look "pretty", but trust me, it's tasty. The staff have managed to pair a cozy environment with comfort food and I just can't get enough of it. Snuggle up on the couch with a friend, a book, a significant other, or even by yourself and be prepared to feel like your at your grandma's house (which she hasn't redecorated since 1970). I have literally no complaints for the service, the location, or the food/drink offerings. It's all great. The only down side is that Trachtenvogl is pretty much always crowded, which can be a real bummer if you're craving one of their mind-blowing hot chocolates and you can't find a seat. So basically....don't get your hopes up when going here, because you may not even be able to sit. BUT if you're lucky, grab a white blueberry hot chocolate and get ready for an adventure with your taste buds!! read more

I loved this place! Came here for breakfast on a Saturday morning and could have stayed all day long. Nice atmosphere, great food and super friendly staff. You even get tap water for free and they have raw sugar (for the healthy peeps of you). You feel like you are sitting in somebody's living room.
