Our first time ever at the iconic Trader Vic's. The place was nearly empty on an early weeknight, but we didn't let that trouble us. We ordered the Mai Tai, Dr, Funk, Pain Killer and Navy Grog cocktails. All were very good We also had the Chicken Breast Hawaiian and the Bah Mee Malayan. The food was the best we've had at a tiki restaurant, and we've been to the Mai Kai in Fort Lauderdale and the Bali Hai in San Diego. Trying to track down our server as if we are in the Winchester Mystery House. Can't even go up to the bar, it remained bartender-less most of the night. 2 stars, there are so many better options. This is perhaps one of the loveliest, elegant and gorgeous restaurant experiences I've had in a long while. I've been on a nostalgic tiki craze recently and in the midst of planning a tiki party at our house in the English countryside and began looking for a tiki theme restaurant for inspiration before making this extraordinary discovery. Despite visiting Munich several times on business this year, having gone to Don the Beachcomber as a child decades ago in the San Francisco Bay Area, and having a grandmother who holidayed in Hawaii every other year in the 1970s, this culminated into this mind-blowing experience. Yet, at the time of this writing, I'm trying to think of ways to get this through as a company expense. However, it's something I will revere forever (especially before losing Germany as part of my job's territory) and has helped me immensely in preparing for my tiki summer party. The combination of elegance from a bygone era, refinement, and contrived exoticism (which tiki is in the first place) is a fine balance that Trader Vic's in Munich has struck phenomenally well. For those who crave glamour, it leaves one with nostalgia for a time of glamour. Every corner, every detail, every morsel of food, is meticulously presented and a restaurant experience closest to that aboard a grand ocean liner during the Golden Age of Transatlantic Travel. After taking endless photos and explaining to the lovely bartender and wait staff that I was indeed crazy, I sat down to a classic Mai Tai in the restaurant chain of its origin. The pineapple chicken was exquisite, as was its presentation. With the lament I carry over not dining at the Trader Vic's in London, which I never knew existed in my 20+ years living there, and missing out on this growing up in San Francisco, I'm delighted this experience in Munich came at a time I could thoroughly appreciate it. I'm also quite enlightened to learn of the chain's prevalence in the Middle East and that there are two more Trader Vic's restaurants right back where I started from. When next visiting parents in the Bay Area, I hope to patronise the one in Emeryville and the other right near my location of upbringing in San Jose, California, at the airport. Who would have thought? This establishment is heartily recommended and I do hope to come back with my partner and a few friends. read more

Extremely disappointing. There are certain expectations with tiki - the decor, the cocktails, the food, and some modicum of service. Trader Vics in Munich is missing 3 out of 4. We went for my daughter's birthday and none of the staff even offered her birthday wishes, and no candle on dessert. we dropped €90 in the bar, and then moved to the restaurant (we were seated in the bar initially by the very dismissive hostess) and it only went down from there. We could not get the wait staff's attention, they did the bare minimum. When we were ready to leave we waited ~20 minutes and had to ask multiple staff to help us pay. The hostess came over & asked if everything was in order, I said no, we'd like to pay & leave. She said ok. There was no grace, no mystique, the food was mediocre, the drinks were weak, a the mint garnish was riddled with holes & had no concern or grace. The service matched the mint. read more

AWESOME! This is the best looking Trader Vic's I have been to. Drinks were great and so was the food. If you want to impress your friends and neighbors here, order the Son OF Dr. Funk. This drink comes in a glass surrounded by an ice cone and it will cause heads to turn! The basement location is great-it is so different from the decor in the rest of the hotel. We had an issue wit hthe online reservation-they didn't get it, but fortunately we only had to wait a half hour for a table and we weren't in a hurry. Definitely a throwback Trader Vic's location but still felt like it was getting the required TLC than an old institution like this deserves. The staff kept the energy up which helped compensate for it being a slower time of night. The sole bartender was all class and was more than able to churn out Trader Vics quality drinks quickly enough to accommodate the large restaurant and group of us sitting at the bar. English. Awful, Awful, Awful!!! I cannot stress this enough. Let me go through the evening. We arrived with reservations already made. The hostess seats us at a 2 top rather than a 4 top which would be nice to have the extra space around you. I get they want to conserve larger tables for larger parties but the place was about 20% capacity and it was already 7pm. Also, the hostess was jamming everyone into one section of the dining area. Would have been nice to have some space between your fellow diners and have a little intimacy while you dined. Next is the prices, this place is ridiculously priced for what all intense purposes is basic Chinese food. €6.40 euro for a very small dish of "special fried rice"? There was nothing special about it. The entrees recieved (schezuan chicken/€24.00 and a vegetable dish) were very heavy handed with salt making it inedible. The Mai Tai had a very strong alcohol flavor and they serve coca cola in the small bottle size. Can't understand why there were water glasses on the table but they were never filled. This furniture in the restaurant is old and loose. This place is an embarrassment to Chinese/asian cuisine. Dont say that you have been warned. Go anywhere but this place. Used to love this place for all the same reasons others posted about. This time, there was a massive (Hawaii) party going on in the back, which destroyed the vibe of the restaurant. Tons of people walking in and out, many who mistook the restaurant (!) for more of a club. On top, after having reserved for months in advance, we were going to be cramped into a dark corner table; Nein Danke. The service personal were friendly but had no authority to change anything or be accommodating (manager?). Overall, if it wasn't for the still awesome food and drinks, I'd say, peace out, never again! Ps.: A bottle of water is €13... Also says a lot. read more

For the price, I expected to enjoy a high-end experience. Or at least an upper mid-range experience. Instead, the only positives were the cute femme maître d', and the original recipe Mai Tai. The food tasted like what I've had out of cans and shopping centre food courts, no exaggeration. I had flashbacks to 15 year-old me spooning nondescript "Chinese" food onto leftover rice to toss in the microwave: Yes, that is how my "spicy" mango chicken tasted. Also, not a damn sight, not a whiff, not even a pretense of anything in my food could be associated with the words "mildly pepper-like", let alone "spicy". I'm not saying that because of my legendary ability to handle spice. I'm saying that because the food was boring as shit. The table service was spotty, sometimes brusque, and certainly not focused on detail. I'm not just talking minor details, like taking our drink order within the first 20 minutes of being seated. I also mean major details, like forgetting the hibachi for an appetizer we were meant to be able to grill ourselves. Seriously, how does one forget the THING THAT BURNS? The dessert menu includes several "seasonal" fruits as well as dishes that include said "seasonal" fruits. None of the fruits on my green tea ice cream seemed particularly ripe, let alone seasonal. Also, what is the point of advertising seasonal fruits like mangoes and pineapples when they spend a month or two anyway in transit from distant lands? Oh yeah, so they can charge €11 or whatever it was for ice cream. If my dining here hadn't been someone else's treat, I would have complained pretty directly. This a great place tucked away behind a few other places. It is located downstairs in a little shopping area. Drinks were great and so was the food. They had a great variety of Hawaiian style cocktails that were really good. The 1944 trader vic mai thai is a winner for sure. read more

The location in the town is perfect and the food really great. I like the Chinese Owen's food in particular. Don't miss one of the Cocktails, if you do not have to drive You'll find a large choice of dishes, form India to Hawaii, everyone can find it's own. Only,the style of the restaurant, instead of Polynesian, looks more like a fancy restaurant in an All Inclusive club, which might not be bad, but not at the level of food. read more

so disappointed! For people who love cuisine and are gourmets, like me, this diner was sad imitation of exotic cuisine. First of all menu is enormous. As an entrée I ate dim sum and were served with Chinese red sauce and .....mustard!!!!!! Tiny 5 or 6 pieces for 17€!!!! second salmon sticks in....warm coctail sauce!!!!!! As a main I have ordered Spiny Lobster Curry and was served with set of stupid sides plate (raisins, pine nuts, diced tomato, marinated pineapple, chili paste, fruit chutney!!!!!!) Lobster was cooked well, but sause was so overwhelming lobster that you barely could taste it. For 48€ I was expecting something breathtaking. Not 'do it yourself' set! This restaurant is great for fancy cocktails, for bachelor partys! Food was sooo bad that the only thing I was missing was Knödel Wok or fillet mignon with Spätzle. This restaurant is to show up not for eating!!!! Sorry but people who like it prabobly were never outside of Bavaria, not mentioning Europe! This place is a must if you have never been to Munich. The Bayerische hotel is beautiful and there are a couple of bars inside which are really unique as well. Trader Vic's however is decked out in wood and looks like a real tiki bar! Definitely recommend for at least one cocktail. read more
