It's amazing the way Master Kaz is able to control an entire class, while teaching different groups at their level. Family Karate Academy is a serious training academy, with Tae Kwon Do instruction, and you can expect your child to learn quickly and grow in technique, confidence and discipline. Master Kaz trains the students to be healthy, focused, and respectful. His instruction includes warm-up. Master Kaz also teaches stranger-danger, bully prevention, and has family events. There is plenty of room at the academy, including changing rooms and observation space. Lots of parking as well, and located conveniently at the SW corner of 15 Mile & Mound, in Sterling Heights. There is no contact with anyone. Staff are wearing masks while training. There are a couple students and staff that cannot wear due to asthma or other medical. Parents that do stay for the smaller classes of no more than 10 or 12 all wear masks. Master Tong and all of his assistants are fully following safety issues with sanitizing equipment and asking students to sanitize. I feel totally comfortable bringing my grandson here. It's an honor to be taught by such caring and professional staff.

Not really thinking this was a long term commitment I could not be happier. I stumbled upon this studio years ago through Google. I took a chance and called to make an appointment with an instructor to see what was offered and what my options were. As there are several options for you and/or your child I thought best to start personal one on one classes and I could not be happier with my choice. Not only has my child stuck with the lessons (personal) for years she has a great bond with her instructor; Aaron. He has been absolutely amazing with her! Not only does she have a higher self esteem she now stands up for herself and no longer takes "garbage" from class mates! The building it's - self is not your typical karate studio, it's very "rugged". Remember you are not there to enter a fashion show! It's exactly what I had wanted for her! Focus on what your lesson is vs. what belt or uniform you will be wearing. As you do have the option though, comfy clothes are best. As for the price you will not be able to beat the offers here. Not only is my daughter attending classes my husband also started attending ( you probably spend more in fast food a week than you will here ).. On a side note, let me say that my husband works out at a regular gym 5-6 days a week few hours a day and never comes homes as hyped up and sweaty as he does going to Tracy's for a half hour once a week. He will be the first to say WARNING: Aaron will kick your butt!! No mercy for the weak (haha). You learn a lot in a short period of time and the instructor will not continue on until he feels you are secure with what was taught and you are doing the moves correctly with no hesitation. Mark & Aaron do a wonderful job leading & teaching & the other instructors are great as well. Our kids (ages 5. 7, & 9) go to the group classes & have learned so much. It has made them more confident and they get a workout every time. My husband and I also take lessons & have learned so much. It never ceases to amaze me how knowledgable the staff is & how willing they are to teach anyone who asks. They train MMA fighters, cops, & regular people off the street like you and me. In all honesty, when we first signed up neither the kids, nor I, knew what to expect. It has turned out to be one of the most amazing experiences of their childhood and my life! Master Norton's skill as a martial artist and his very cool way with the kids is more than we could have ever expected. I'm not a social media guy, or one to write reviews, but this review I write with pleasure as a way to thank him for what he does for my kids, for me, and for all his students. Birmingham Martial Arts was doing one hour sessions at Shain Park in Downtown Birmingham during the…read moresummer of 2020, so we checked it out. The manager came right over and introduced herself and our son joined the session. She was friendly and she informed us about the outdoor classes due to COVID-19 and we signed our son up on the spot. After about four sessions I noticed that our son was spending an accumulated forty-five minutes waiting in line to do the movements that the instructors were having him do. For $110 per month I was hoping for him to be much more active. The pillars listed on their website are self-esteem, discipline, focus, respect, & fitness. There wasn't enough activity for them to hit the pillar of fitness. So, we canceled the membership. They had too many kids and not enough instructors. They did other things like playing dodgeball and carrying punching bags to and from a marker, which were good activities, but I can't get over the lack of activity for most of the sixty-minute sessions. The owner had a group of teenagers and he was doing synchronized kicks and punches with them during these one hour sessions and that looked awesome. But, the kids in my son's group were getting the shaft. I understand the importance of teaching good technique, which the instructors were doing well, but if you have young kids who have trouble doing jumping jacks with good form then it is likely that they won't be able to do kicks and punches with good form. It would have been much better to have them do five-minute routines that included various movements like punches, kicks, squats, burpees, push-ups, lunges, etc. I gave three stars because the manager was kind and personable and the instruction was good and they refunded us the $110 for the next month after we had cancelled during the previous month. But, for my money I would rather have my son do something where he is almost constantly moving.
