I didn't realize I already hit my 200th review... I'd been saving that special spot of recognition…read morefor a place that really, truly deserves it. The ironic thing is I've been holding on to this review for it's special #200 spot, but all along I argued with myself because I knew it would be important for other people to be aware of this place and its services... and now it doesn't even get its 200 spot. Well. The William J. Riley Memorial Residence is an amazing, wonderful place and regardless of where it falls in my reviews, it is quite seriously the most important place I will probably ever write about. Some folks call this place Hospice House, others call it Riley House, and after spending a week there, I lovingly referred to this beautiful facility as The Hospice Hilton. When my mom was losing her fight against breast cancer last February, my sleep-deprived and inexperienced family and I essentially became useless to her. Her need for 24-hour, well-informed care was far beyond what we could provide, even after enlisting the help of extended family members and friends. Riley House offered my mom the quality care she needed and deserved during her last days in a comfortable, home-like environment and it gave my family and me the opportunity to be husband, son, and daughter once again, giving us the chance to really be present to my mom at the end of her life. Riley's facilities really impressed me. All eight bedrooms are really wonderful--my mom's room was spacious and sunny with wide windows, and we were welcome to stay with her at all times, if that's what we chose. The rooms are large enough to accommodate many visitors at once, which is a nice change from hospital visitor restrictions. The recliner and pull-out bed were well used the week we spent at Riley, and my brother had no trouble finding space on the floor for his sleeping bag. Each room has a full bathroom, a mini-fridge, cabinets, a table and chairs, and a TV with DVD. DVDs are on hand at the nurses station. There is a large kitchen staffed with volunteers who attend to the meal needs of residents at Riley and they gladly offer their services to visiting family and friends as well. The dining room is available for families who choose to bring their meals to Riley and a large living room provides a comfortable space with a fireplace, lots of natural light, comfy couches and plenty of puzzles to keep people busy. There is also a small, quiet prayer room for those who need some solitude and a toy room for folks bringing small children to visit. While the space and amenities available are all really wonderful, it's the care and the services provided that truly stand out at Riley. There is always at least one nurse and one aide on duty, and these women are angels. They are compassionate, patient, respectful and incredibly competent. Nurses Beth and Maria, in particular, were outstanding and their peaceful presence soothed both my mother and the rest of us during very difficult times. I originally had my doubts about turning my mom over to the care of strangers, but these women--I don't even have words to articulate how wonderful they were with my mom and with us. I will always be so grateful for their kind care and for helping give my mom a dignified, peaceful transition. One of the most amazing things about Riley House is that if their rooms are not full, they will not turn a person away, whether that individual can pay for the services or not. Riley is part of Hospice of the Calumet Area, Inc. in Northwest Indiana and they accept private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid. If an individual is uninsured or cannot pay for the services at Riley, he or she is not turned away. Donations and contributions allow Riley to take care of anyone in need, regardless of their ability to pay. I am grateful that such a facility exists and that anyone is able to use their superior services, because everyone deserves dignified, quality care. I am inspired by those who volunteer their time and talents to Riley House and provide companionship to residents who are scared and alone. Mostly, though, I am happily indebted to the nurses and volunteers at Riley House for giving my mom a peaceful place to spend her last days with her family. If I could give every star ever awarded to any entity, they would not even come remotely close to recognizing just how incredible Riley House is.

We placed my mom there in 2020 on the memory care unit with a diagnosis of dementia. At one point she was found on the cold floor and according to the ER doctors , she had to have been there for hours for the condition she was in. The facility wasn't even going to send her to hospital until family demanded they do so. She was admitted and spent over a week fighting for her life. She returned to the facility on a different unit because there were no open beds elsewhere. She had physically deteriorated from this incident being unable to stand or transfer anymore. Over the next 2 years she had 4 new injuries that were unexplained, some undocumented by staff only to be discovered by family or Hospice staff. She has finally be relocated to another facility where she will receive the care and dignity she deserves. DO NOT PLACE YOUR LOVED ONES HERE. THEY OFFER EVERY EXCUSE FOR THEIR POOR CARE INCLUDING LOW STAFFING....THEY SHOULD OFFER INCENTIVES AND PAY THEIR WORKERS BETTER TO PROVIDE BETTER CARE. The director of nursing and building administrator don't even have the decency to return calls.

Yes I have problems with my hip but nowhere near as severe as my knee. The X ray tech only offered an unstable support device on my left side pushing me to the right. The device had 4 legs with a tall handle with two legs on the floor and two elevated on part of the x ray machine. I was in excruciating pain try to stay on my feet to prevent falling to my right. The support device should have been on my right where the bad knee is sitting on a level surface. Next I'm called into a room by a nurse who also seemed more concerned about my hip. My knee has been hurting for 3 years with the hip starting to give pain about 7 weeks ago but with mild pain. My right knee will no longer hold my full body weight. I asked about treatment for my knee but was told we're not dealing with that today. Knowing this wasn't the right course to get the ability to walk again and the dangers in X ray it was time to leave. didn't get to see a doctor yet I'm being billed for a missed appointment which I have no intention of paying since none were available for the primary reason of being there. The various puddles of urine at different levels of evaporation was a sign before X ray. There had been urine on the floor for hours. Hopefully I won't have to wait another 3 weeks to see a professional.

So I emailed Jemai, and did my best to explain to her my Mom in regards to her pain management. I know as a Director of Admissions, I would have been like who the heck does she think she is! Just kidding! But seriously, when you brimg your loved ones to a place you know nothing about, you're VERY nervous. It's understood that people have to become acclimated to systems, but sometimes there's a right away thing that comes about. And with our Mom, that's about what it is. Everything else, she's cooler than a fan. But Jemai acted right away! She emailed me back with the Director of Nursing, Kathy, a part of the email letting me know she passed along my concerns to the appropriate party. Then Kathy emailed me directly addressing my concerns with solutions!! Then Rhyle, the unit manager, responded introducing himself, letting me know to reach out with any concerns. Now I'll say this much in comparison to Ignite Medical Resorts, which I still love, Brickyard is A1 in response time in email form, which I appreciate, because I am an email kind of girl!!! Also have to thank Nurse Yasmine for getting the ball rolling, getting control of Mom's pain. She even got her setup with an orthopedist for her knee pain. So appreciative! And I met Jasmine, whom my Mom loves!! I asked about laundry, and she took Mom's clothes right down. Hope they make it back. Lol TBC She also talks of how much she helps her, along with TaNiyah. When you find genuine caring people, it means the world. Then there is therapy, which my Mom talks about alot. She even has good nurses on the midnight. Thank you to the midnight shift. She doesn't remember names well. Lol She talked about how much she's getting up and down in therapy. Will admit, haven't seen it yet, but says she be wore out!! Lol That's a good thing. So thank you LaTisha, Sue, and whoever Rick?, hope that's right. She talks about them often, with a smile. Thank you to Ms. Bianca, the Unit C manager. She made sure to ask what Mom needed, especially a walker, which is what we said. She said she'd get it ordered, with a list of other things. Everyone has been so helpful. ADMIN AND UNIT C ROCKS! It is so appreciated. The things you hear are sometimes often misconstrued!!

We were assigned Emily as our case manager and she was great to work with. However, we interacted the most with Grace who was on-call at the time we engaged them and helped my Dad a good bit during his last couple of days. Grace was super patient with us when we asked lots of questions about his care and hospice in general. LifeChoice also provided a rabbi for us and I think my father really appreciated that the rabbi visited with him for over an hour. I think they provided my father a lot of peace and comfort during his final days. My only regret was not engaging them sooner. Thank you LifeChoice for all of the help you provided my father and our family.

Their whole demeanor and attitude is that of angels, compassion, empathy, love..When he was in the hospital, he was not receiving the proper pain management, they kept delaying the hospitals hospice program while my dad was dying in pain. I was desperate to get him home. Alena, the administrator, moved mountains to make that happen. They got my dad home in less than 18 hours, they were by my father's bedside within two hours of me calling desperate for help, which felt like a miracle during such a difficult time. Daniel, the nurse who came to the hospital, was so attentive and caring such a such a genuine person. And once we were home, nurse Julie and nurse Grace took over and truly went above and beyond. They made sure the bed oxygen tanks supplies and meds was delivered before my dad even got home. They made sure my dad was comfortable, out of pain, and surrounded by dignity and respect--something he was not receiving in the hospital. there was also a Sweet CNA that came to help as well, Because of them, my dad was able to pass peacefully at home, just as he deserved. That means everything to me my father and our family. All of my father's friends and loyal family were able to come visit with him before he passed the next morning.. I highly recommend this hospice agency to anyone going through end-of-life care for a loved one--or even for themselves. Don't wait until the last minute. Have this hospice team set up ahead of time--you will not regret it. They are truly angels doing God's work. Shannon Johnson-parson
