Absolutely wonderful!!! It's the sweetest most unique place to have dinner. We had the lobster pasta and it was spectacular. We had the lamb ragout as well and it was delicious. The biscuits are dreamy. But it's the customer service which is beyond...they are so welcoming and they care deeply that you enjoy your experience. Victoria Day weekend is a great time for a Staycation. So we packed up the car and headed to Tatamagouche. We had one night in caboose #5. The staff member we first encountered was delightful. He took us to our 'room' and showed us around. Our caboose was adorable. The bed was soft and I had fun crawling up into the cupola and reading in the seating area. The breakfast in the cafe was amazing! If I was to send along a suggestion or three, I would mention that A) the washroom fan is very loud B) the sliding washroom door only opens halfway easily. The next half needs a bit of strength and the handles in the door or 'sharp' and actually hurt my hand when trying to open the door. C) the blinds in the caboose serve as privacy blinds only. Once the sun was up, so were we. 6:00 am is not my ideal waking time when on vacation. There ya go. Visit the trains, but bring a sleep mask with you!!!! Looking forward to visiting again. read more

If you're looking for a totally unique place to visit for a vacation, you NEED to check out this spot. Rail service in Nova Scotia has seen considerable changes in the past 100 years, and when the Tatamagouche Station Master moved out and the building was scheduled for demolition, a local 18 year old bought and saved it from destruction. This same young man later went on to restore the spot and turn it into a novel hospitality business. Over the next decade they added actual rail cars and converted them into accommodations too. It's no surprise the enterprise was named number one out of the top ten most unique places to stay in Canada. You could read all that on their web page... But what you won't read is how TOTALLY COOL this spot is. The rail cars are comfortable accommodations, totally renovated from their original form. They have all the amenities you'll need for an overnight stay, including a converted dining car for your meals. The owners are the sweetest people who took lots of time to tell us about the place, and some of the history of the cars. It wasn't too busy at that particular time, so they even let us check out all the vacant cars to choose which one we wanted to stay in. If you're a rail enthusiast, or if you have a family looking for a fun place to stay, or even if you just plain want an adventure of your own, you have to see this place for yourself. Even if you just stop by to see it without booking a night, it's well worth the effort. I was thoroughly amused and entertained by the place. Plus Tatamagouche is a gorgeous little town. It has a great walking trail (right next to the Inn!!) you'll want to check out too. Can't go wrong with this spot. Five stars for being unique. Five stars for being beautiful. Five stars for great hospitality. Five stars for living history. Five stars for being reasonably priced for the experience you get. That ought to add up to 25 stars, don't you think? Oh, the cutest of places. A short walk to the new Creamery/Grainary centres, the market and umm...the..the river! And the...buy and sell! THE RESTAURANT In the former dining car, this place is cute as a kitten in coal. I had the lobster sandwich, on a kind of oily ciabatta with a little too much mayo. Bringing out a few of our plates long before the others, and the questionable mayo gives this place 4 instead of 5 stars. Otherwise, the veggies are all garden grown, they had a lovely shaved zuccini salad, and the chowder was a milky, seafoodful delight. Realistically there is not a lot of stuff to do in Tat besides trawling said Buy & Sell (REVIEW PENDING, it is a wonderland) getting a milkshake at the pharmacy, and going to Houston's Butcher for bacon. However, Mr. Houston did once have a whole moose hanging in his meat locker that I got to poke. Highlights occur. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Tatamagouche is a really fun place to spend an afternoon, and Train Station Inn would be a lovely place to stay the night. The Train Station Inn Restaurant has incredible atmosphere. Who wouldn't want to eat in a train car? It is good to reserve ahead but saying that, we did get lucky as walk ins. The waitress was pleasant and showed us around the car. The nerdy part of me was overjoyed! The food was good and the service excellent. They offer a good variety of choices that reflect locally sourced items. I had their special which was calamari and although it wasn't the best I've ever had, I didn't care as I was too busy loving the atmosphere. My co-pilot had a quesadilla and loved it. The added touch of a paper peacock was a fun touch. I would highly recommend this as it isn't just a restaurant, it was an experience. read more

A very unique place, to say the least. First stayed there 16 years ago, and thought it was great. This time with kids, and meh. Kids thought it was cool for one night, not two. We are in the dining car, and service was very good, along with the atmosphere. Food was good, had the lamb ragout, it was a nice break from constant seafood. If this were our first time there, probably 4 stars, which is the rating I've given here to be fair. Second time around, the experience wears off a bit. Jost winery is 15 minutes down the road and well worth a stop. read more

Growing up around train stations and sleeping in a caboose 60 years later is *as good as it gets*. Not only did it evoke fond memories, but the decor and the ambiance was perfect. Clean, cozy( some would say small but it's a caboose, what did you expect) and the little patio on the back just added to it's charm. Then you wander over to the dining car only to find that you've stepped back into history and are about to eat in one of the finest *restaurants* for that period. What a joy. Gal, the hostess was as friendly and as knowledgeable as any rail affecionado and gave us the grand tour. We felt , not like customers, but more like family and she was showing off her baby!!! Then the food. There were 3 couples dining in the car and I noticed that as each was served their dish, the first bite brought utter silence at that table. We were no different. The minute the delicious food hits your taste buds, you want nothing more than to close your eyes and savour the moment. And that is exactly what we did. All that was heard was quiet little hums of pure delight. Chef Alec is a top notch chef & we can't wait to return!!! 5 stars?? Not enough I would give this a Michelin 3 rating. read more

I've been to the restaurant as a child and it was still as adorable as I remember it being on the train. The food was great and I'm glad the chef could accommodate me since I'm vegan. However, I could hear someone mocking me in the kitchen about the fact that I'm vegan and that kind of wasn't cool. Otherwise it was a lovely experience. I will return but for future reference: margarine does have milk in it which does harm cows unless it's vegan margarine, and diners can in fact hear everything that's said in the kitchen.
