That really adds up when I have to be on the road for a couple of weeks. That said, I would MUCH rather pay MLFYP that amount than, say, a kennel or PetSmart. It is a big deal to trust someone to take your dogs out into the world for adventures, or stay in your home and care for your dogs when you're traveling. She is professional, genuinely loves the pups, is an excellent communicator including daily updates and photos, and is always looking out for the dogs' well-being. Jolie takes them to the beach and on hikes in state parks in the Berkeley/Oakland area. She sends to me and posts on Instagram photos of their outings, and sometimes I get a little jealous of my dogs' fun time! What sets Jolie apart from other dog walkers is that she incorporates positive reinforcement training in her walks. My pups are a little excitable and she worked with them so they don't bark when she arrives to our home. Generally, I've noticed that the dogs are a lot calmer and less reactive on our neighborhood, leashed walks since being R Positive clients. Jolie is also very caring and loving towards the dogs. About 4 months ago, my 12 year old dog went blind but is still active. Jolie did not seem phased that she would have a blind dog in her group. She has been incredibly patient with our blind pup and thoughtful about what the dog can and can't do now. I've used Jolie for daily dog walks and dog sitting at our home over a weekend. If you follow his Twitter or are already a client, you probably already know this, but he is very in tune with the dogs he manages, and he values each as one of his own. When I had an accident and needed shoulder surgery that debilitated me, Danny went above and beyond for me. He took Ori into his own home and tolerated separation anxiety behavior as I healed with nary a complaint. He also got me into my apartment when I lost my keys! Danny is the most loving, considerate and dedicated pet family member/contributor I have ever known. I say family member as, when Ori died of cancer at 11 years, Danny was one of the first people I thought to notify. They had a special relationship. The only thing was, I had to find a place for the Superdog, aka Ty. Our regular sitter, before only used for 3-day weekends, was charging upwards of $800 for 3x/day walking sessions--WAY out of our budget! Damn, if we could afford that we'd take ourselves to Maui, right? So I called around and found some dog walkers from Craigslist. This particular service, Mick's, sounded good and pretty reasonable, so I called four of their references. It totally checked out. I make arrangements with Mick over the phone and a time for him to meet my dog, and we're good. Then, several days before we're due to meet he emails and says he's busy but his associate will do the dog sitting. Okay, I think, kind of unprofessional but as long as it gets done... When his "associate" shows up a week before we're due to leave for Maui, I open the door to find a woman with a purebred, un-neutered Golden Retreiver who barges into my apartment and she barely even glances at my dog; instead, she keeps an eye on her own (breeder) dog so he doesn't "mark on the carpet"--uh, ok. First, I'm not a proponent of breeding. Shout out for all the shelter dogs! Second, spay and neuter, people. Spay and neuter. Third, she tells me to use a prong collar instead of his Gentle Leader. Eh, I'm a proponent of animal rights, not human-induced suffering. Third, for God's sake, don't bring your own dog to a dog-sitting interview. How frickin' unprofessional can one get? So. The rest of the interview is decent; I wouldn't normally go with this person but she'll keep my dog safe enough and I'm stuck. I'll be gone over Christmas and any REAL dog-sitter has been booked for months. Then, two days later I'm at the dog park with Ty when my phone rings. It's you-know-who. "I'm not sure I feel comfortable walking Ty," she says. Ty has issues when other dogs come up to him and try to steal him tennis ball. This was clearly explained in my first phone call to Mick. I freak out inside but calmly say, "he'll be fine on-leash; please don't tell me you're backing out--my flight leaves in two days and everyone else is booked." To her credit, she works with me but is clearly not used to working with actual dogs who have actual personalities. Realizing that I'm going to have to cancel my trip to Hawaii because this woman is not going to take care of my dog, I frantically look up pet-sitters online. The first one I find, Pet Camp, I call. It so happens that they have one opening for a large dog over New Years. I call Micks and gratefully cancel. Petcamp is awesome and Ty loves it there...but that's another review...
