TLDR, if you're on the fence- TAKE THE INTRO TRAPEZE CLASS! These classes *are* available to the public - you do not need to be a trained professional. Circus Academy NY (formerly Trapeze School NY) was an incredible place to take my first trapeze class. Did their Thursday afternoon class @ Pier 40 yesterday from 6-8 PM and all 3 instructors - Yiannis, Ross, and Stuart - were knowledgeable, friendly, and made me feel safe. Special shout out to Yiannis for his sense of humor and warmth! I liked that all instructors gave detailed guidance, patiently answered questions, and then demo'ed the sequence. I especially appreciated that if students didn't feel comfortable flipping or being caught mid-air, the instructors encouraged everyone but didn't pressure anyone to do something if the student wasn't feeling it. I lived in NY for years and my only regret is not having taken regular classes here while I was still here. LOVED the experience and I intend on taking a class every time I'm visiting NY! A few notes on logistics for Pier 40 classes: -arrive 10-15 min early to change, check into your class, and get fitted into your harness -to reach the class, take the elevator to the third floor and walk through the parking lot towards the turf soccer field, you'll see the huge trapeze structure -there's a changing room, water, also cliff bars and sunscreen available for purchase on the roof (third floor) -bathrooms are on the second floor read more

Tried flying trapeze for the first time and with a big fear of heights, came out swinging and flying through the air, and got to do an advanced trick where I swung and grabbed the instructors' arms! What a great experience, I'm still soaking in how cool and accessible this class was. What made the experience was how well thought-out the teaching experience is, and how passionate the instructors are at correcting your form and helping you succeed in such a brief time. This is truly a school. Some of the people helping me were Hal, Aaron, Allie. They have a great system to get you set up with safety, get you hooked, and help you through the tricks as you get a feel for swinging through the air. I felt I could put my complete trust to them as they called out for my next move, and could focus on getting the trick right. The time flies fast, and your time on the trapeze is fast-paced so make sure you're warmed up and ready to swing your legs onto the bar that you're holding with your hands. The only downside is that the amount of times you get to go up the ladder depends on how many people are also in the class with you, since it's an individual sport (I got to fly three times). She told me all the commands to listen for and had me practice my movements while on the ground so I would know what to do once I got up on the platform. What a great experience! I went from having absolutely no experience with trapeze to being able to do a handful of tricks in just 2 hours or so. The instructors were friendly and knowledgeable and very good at individually addressing everyone's form and helping them with things like posture and confidence. The views from the outdoor area were amazing and even more amazing when viewed upside down from the swing. This the best experience I had in my recent 9 day trip to New York! Go to Central Park, The Vessel, The Edge, but if you want a truly one off experience, make sure you visit Trapeze School New York! This is coming from someone with a fear of heights! Yiannis, Stuart and Anna were all incredible throughout the 2 hour session. I expected at least half of the 2 hour session to be on the ground, learning the basics, but after 15 minutes of thorough, entertaining and informative ground school we were up on the trapeze flying through the air. The staff were incredible at putting everyone at ease with their charm and personalities and were total professionals from start to finish. An awesome adventure for my bachelorette party. I saw this as a young girl and it as my dream to have it for my last fling before the ring. It is conveniently located on pier 40, despite Google maps wanting to take me further down the rd. I found parking nearby on the street, free on weekends. Take the elevators to the third floor, turn left and voila, you encounter the trapeze and netting system. I didn't know exactly what to expect, especially since I was the first one to go. I was quite nervous, especially when you reached the top of the ladder. Once at the top you have the whole view of NYC. I have to say after each trial, my fear diminished and I really.loved flying in the air. There is always someone at the bottom to billey you just in case you fall from the trapeze which made me feel even more comfortable. staff was wonderful! Big shout out to Randy, Andy, and Mylie for making this event spectacular. Call to make reservations ahead of time. You need 10 people.minimum for group reservations for 2 hour lessons. read more

This is an absolutely fantastic experience. We went as first time flyers - the team was super friendly and professional, made us feel very safe, and eased us into different tricks that aggregated into a catch. They gave clear instructions, and provided personalized tips and pointers after each attempt, which was incredibly helpful. Not the fittest person out there (and a tad scared of heights) but I was able to complete all the tricks and have a stellar time. Really great adrenaline rush and a very unique experience. I've been to this school once before and it was SO FUN so I decided to make that my birthday party this year. The weather was 52° and raining (in May) and the weather wasn't supposed to let up all week. All the other classes on the day of my class were cancelled except for mine, and I tried to reschedule it but they said since THEY didn't deem the weather bad enough for only my 1.5 hour period that I still had to pay and could not reschedule or be refunded. I was really upset and the woman on the phone was extremely rude, I'm really disappointed with my experience and although I really loved my first class I will unfortunately never be going back. After having been absent from flying for a looong time, I decided to come back and get back in the groove. Pretty embarrassing not to be able to do my go-to trick but I guess that is to be expected. That's why we have teachers, eh? Safety: 5/5 I started flying back in 2017 but because the instructors don't know me, they made me jump off the board with a belt-hold even if in the past I take off without one. I appreciate that. I have to admit that my take-offs need improvement but my point here is that it only goes to show how the school takes safety seriously. Teaching: 5/5 For someone who has been flying for some time now, you hit a point where you're not progressing as fast as you'd like to be and sometimes, the instructors get tired of teaching you over and over again because you're supposed to know this. Have to say, when I went this weekend, I had a hard talk from one of the instructors. Tough love, but hey, she's right. In as much as this is all just fun for me, I am doing myself a disservice because I am not living up to my full potential. That said, I got insightful comments and instructions on what I'm doing wrong and what I can do better to be able to do my trick again. Moreover, besides the instructions on how I can move my body, the instructor was also very aware of my mental state (i.e. anxiety) in getting the trick done. That just shows a level of understanding not all teachers have. So, for new fliers who are just getting started, you're not the only ones feeling anxious up in the air. It's a fun activity, I never get enough of it! I always look forward to the feeling of jumping off the board and flying up in the air. Good luck! P.S. COVID protocols in place! 35 and aliiiiiiiiive was the theme for my 35th birthday. I get sick on roller-coasters and am terrified of jumping off of high drops so I wanted to conquer a fear. Spouse gifted me (us) with a trapeze class. The teachers were amazing: both patient and firm. EACH jump was terrifying - thank God no kids were in our group because on my first jump every expletive came out of my mouth at least 5x. My confidence increased on each jump, even though I was still petrified. When all was said and done I did a backflip, hung upside down, latched onto a teacher in the air... I still can't believe I did it. I *think* its $75 per person (I didn't pay) which is very reasonable for what you get. I highly recommend this spot. I'll *never* forget my 35th birthday. read more

My besty Kath is SO hard to shop for, so on her b-day, I hadn't a clue what to get her. Once again, Miss Keri M came through with the great idea to get her lessons at the Trapeze School on Chelsea Piers. It's something different, and something we can do together (see my pics)! We were lucky enough to get places for the first outdoor classes of the summer season. Definitely get there at least 15 minutes beforehand to sign a waiver, change, etc as the instructors launch in right away with a chat about safety, how to hold the bar, what to expect, etc and in the meantime, are strapping harnesses on to you and before you know it, the first student is already climbing up the ladder. You do about 4-5 jumps each, all in preparation for the grand finale: the catch! We had SO much fun. The concept, the instructors, the view, and of course, the swinging itself, was too cool to describe. Which means that you need to go try it yourself! It really is something I would have never done, but now we both can't wait to do it again - however, I will say I am still feeling pain in muscles I didn't even know existed, but that's what Extra Strength Tylenol is for, right? read more

This is seriously an excellent time. I've had zero gymnastics training and I'm telling you now, it does not matter at all. What may actually help is if you do yoga and are flexible. But anyone can do this, and I recommend trying it out with friends, on a date, with coworkers -- anyone with a sense of adventure who isn't afraid to make an ass of his/herself while dangling upside down. Do the Governor's Island one on a nice day, it's a great getaway from the city. The instructors are funny and provide the right balance of sympathy to ease your anxiety and sternness to prevent last minute chickening out. I have to disagree with Carrie Bradshaw on the scariest part as letting go of the bar to connect with the trapeze artist. That part, once you get the hang of it, isn't so bad, and you are not doing most of the work there. But one of the scariest moments I've experienced is leaning over the edge, before you even step off, with only the instructor holding on to your belt to keep you from falling face-first towards the net. And no, the knowledge that you are fully strapped in does not make you less frightened for your life. So yes, that part had my heart pounding uncontrollably. The bar is heavier than it looks, so that also threw me off. But as the instructors tell you over and over, all you have to do is listen to their commands, do them when they say so, and you will be fine. It still may not be for everyone -- I went with two friends, one was fine and the other freaked out after doing it twice and didn't go back up. It was in part because of the latter climb, which is nerve wracking. The class itself is two hours long, and we each got to go 4-5 times, which was just enough. It doesn't seem like a workout, but we were completely exhausted and giddy by the end. Customer service is also good here -- I emailed with a concern about paying with credit card and received a quick response. Fresh off the high from my first trapeze experience, I seriously considered buying a 10-class package. In the end, it's not something I would do regularly, but I would definitely go back to learn more tricks. It's money well spent. read more

This is a solid 5 star establishment! My boyfriend and I decided this would be our anniversary activity as it sounded both challenging and like such a thrill! First, I should note that since our anniv is in Feb, we took our trapeze class in the Circus Warehouse. I have heard that view and the experience of flying outdoors on the pier is stunning, so I think we will have to come back in the summer. That being said, getting to take our class in the warehouse while other people practiced juggling, acrobatics, the ropes etc, was definitely an awesome part of the day! I am still in disbelief that both of us were able to do a backflip AND be caught by one of their staff in our first class. It really speaks to the level of talent and instruction. Everyone we worked with was so friendly and patient and most importantly, clear and concise in their instruction so it made it effortless to get it right. The biggest challenge in this is to get over your own thoughts and just listen to the crew! Super Fun - Exciting - Challenging - Funny and most of all, ending with a sense of accomplishment... what a way to ring in a new year together! My boyfriend and I came together as trapeze newbies, and it was such a great experience! I'm very out of shape (I can't even do a push-up or pull-up) and still had a fantastic time. We took a beginner level class at Pier 40 with a bachelorette party and two other women who came as individuals, around 14 people in total. The instruction was really excellent - the three instructors clearly outlined each step and made us repeat it with them several times to ensure that we understood, and the instructor on the lines (Travis) made very clear calls while we were flying. We each got four turns - we started off with the knee hang, then two turns of the back somersault dismount, and finished with a trick where you grab the catcher's (Keenan) wrists and fly with them. There was no pressure to do add each new step though; the instructors constantly reassured us and reminded us to stay with whatever we felt comfortable doing. I scared myself by reading through the waiver form in detail and ruminating over all the possible things that could go wrong, and I guess it was really obvious that it was nervous because the instructor on the platform (I think her name was Bonnie?) kept starting up conversations when it was my turn. She and the other instructors were so sweet and kind; it was really a wonderful experience. It seems really scary at first but actually it's not too hard. I think the hardest part is actually grabbing onto the bar on the platform before you jump off; the swinging part feels pretty natural and it's a lot of fun. There are also lots of safety precautions in place - trust the instructors!! There were a few very minor negatives that I can think of: - It rained heavily the day before so the ground was still extremely wet, though this isn't something they can control since it's on the roof. - There were a few moments between turns when nothing was happening. - If you're in a rush to go somewhere afterward, be aware that there's only one small changing area behind a curtain so it takes a while if a lot of people need to change. - It would have been nice to have more turns, in particular more than one shot at the catching trick (and some other reviews say they got five turns total). Nevertheless, as a very unathletic and fairly timid and cautious person, I definitely recommend giving this a try! Really conflicted between a 4 and a 5 rating since the instructors were the sweetest, but the timing was just the slightest bit disorganized (I think we were behind schedule) and I would have liked to get more than one try at some tricks. (I wasn't planning to write any non-food reviews but the overwhelmingly positive reviews were actually one of the reasons I gave this a go, and I'm really glad I did, so here I am over a month later writing a review myself!) read more

I've been wanting to do trapezing for awhile. My good friend took me there for my birthday and I had a blast. I don't know what I was thinking but I thought it was going to be much easier than it looks, but boy was it hard! I also learned that I have difficulty following directions. I think I aggravated one of the instructors, who all happen to be adorable with great bodies. I think if you have time to dedicate to this exercise, it's such a mindblowing experience. The pics taken were beautiful, but when I got home with the flashdrive only 6 of the 16 on there were viewable on my computer or phone so that was disappointing. TSNY is a wonderful company and provides a service you don't find everywhere. The staff is great, though beware some sass. Each instructor explains the tricks a bit different so be flexible in your learning; if you don't understand their cues, ask another instructor to clarify. My advice/thoughts, especially for first timers: * it's not a roller coaster, your stomach won't end up in your throat so don't be scared of your bunny hop off the platform. It's more like a gliding zip line. * The guy on the lines will tell you when to do your next action, but note that actions happen at the peaks so be ready to do them, or you'll mess up the timing. * Make the most out of watching the demos, see when they make their moves and try to replicated it. * You WILL get bruises and be sore. But that's athletics. And the biggest thing I'd like to stress is that this is a SERVICE. If you enjoyed your time please tip your instructors. 3 of them are doing heavy lifting for 2 hours, plus 2 more staff are behind the scenes. The photographer snaps about 20 pics pp that you can purchase for $38 after the class, but you're allowed to take your own pics and video! Let me caution anyone with any injuries or soreness that this will probably exacerbate those issues. I have never written a negative review of a business, but feel the need to warn people about Trapeze School New York. I made a reservation for my son and three nieces to participate in one of their classes. After I did, I started to see news about the "dangerous heat" that New York City (and several other parts of the country) were about to experience. I emailed two days before to say I was concerned about the kids participating under these conditions. Since I was not within their 72-hour cancellation policy, they would not provide a refund, but said they would be monitoring the weather and would cancel the class if they deemed it unsafe, which I was confident it would be. Well, they did not end up cancelling it and said they had water, electrolyte popsicles and umbrellas for shade. Seriously? I was very shocked by their response. This definitely would not have been safe. There were warnings from doctors all over the news not to physically exert yourself in this weather. And to expect kids to do this is just unacceptable. They said they are a small business and could not provide a refund. And while I like to support small businesses, it's not like I'm some huge corporation. I'm an individual who they took $340 from. I reached out as soon as I saw the weather might be an issue and think they could have made an exception to their 72-hour rule because of the extreme heat and the fact that children would have been participating. But they did not, so I am warning others to think twice about doing business with Trapeze School New York. read more

I scheduled a one-hour private trampoline lesson for my 10-year old niece (from AZ) on her first trip to NYC in October. She is a skilled gymnast, has her own trampoline. and was thrilled to have a private one-on-one lesson with Hal who was outstanding! Don't let my recent financials fool you (receipt for SCUBA certification with Michael F.; one skydiving deposit for this weekend) - I'm no adrenaline junkie. Far from it - I in fact peed my pants typing the word 'skydiving' just now. This is, however, probably one of the few remaining summers where pants-wetting Youthful Exuberance is totally okay, and when Disposable Income can be be slung, flung, and tossed with reckless abandon - not that there was anything reckless about my very safe, fully-loaded-with-awesome introductory trapeze lesson. For the paltry price of $67 per head, our group of 7 learned and performed 3 progressive "tricks" over 2 hours. Each participant was given two chances to complete each trick before moving onto the next. The below are, to my mind, the five things you ought to know about "flying" - 1. This is NOT an athletic endeavor; the most strenuous exertion involves a little bit of flexibility, and some elementary hanging-on. Plus, you've got both a harness and a handler - a lovely barechested man that guides your trajectory with a pole, in case you can't muster the requisite momentum by LEAPING forward off the platform at go. 2. This is NOT a particularly difficult endeavor. It's not like snowboarding or the Argentine tango. A more (in)appropriate analogous activity would be sex - the experiential difference between someone who's never done it, and someone who's done it one time is weirdly magnified. In other words: you WILL be able to complete tricks at the close of two hours! 3. The thrill factor is low-moderate, thanks to a virtually nonexistent danger element - which is in turn thanks to the safety net, harness, barechested handler, and constant supervision by instructors. The most nerve-wrecking few seconds are probably when you're standing atop the platform, awaiting your first jump. 4. Aside from socks, bring your camera, and some buds. It's a highly photogenic activity and you're gonna love your pictures. 5. This is -without question- the best organized fun I've ever had in Manhattan. I'd HIGHLY recommend it for an edgy corporate event or creative date or birthday party - or, as we did it - in a casual crowd of friends and without an agenda. We were all glowing for the subsequent 36 hours. I will almost certainly be back before the end of summer; I hope I've convinced you to check it out as well. This place rocks my socks off. You sign up for a 2-hour timeslot for either indoor or outdoor (you can't change it). They harness you up so beware - if you have any type of belly piercing, you have to take it out, because it will rip that piercing out. Kind of scary, I do wonder what happens if you have an outie belly button - but looking at that is more disgusting than a ripped belly button ring. They give you a few easy instructions on the ground. Then.... It's a long, wobbly climb to the platform of probably 2 stories high. It doesn't look scary until you climb up that ladder, so powder those hands up, because you will be sweating with fear! Once on the platform, a little bitty guy grabs onto the back of your harness while your other 2 hands are clasped tightly around the bars for safekeeping. He brings over the swing bar which is HEAVY (they told me it was 5 pounds, but it felt more like 15!) for your right hand to grab while the left is still grasping firmly to the metal bar next to you. Then.... He tells you to lean FORWARD with your feet still firmly planted onto the platform. You have to be at like a 30 degree angle. Sweat pours down your brows and your underarms are soaked with perspiration (gross, but true). Then... He tells you to let go of your other hand and grab the swing bar with BOTH HANDS NOW! UM, HELLLL NO! But he tries to reassure you that he's got you. You tell him, "you weigh probably the same amount as my left thigh, I am not letting go!".. he tells you, trust me, I got you, just grab the bar with your other hand. Finally, with knees shaking, teeth chattering, you do it.... THEN...... Onnnneee.. Twwwooooo... THREE - JUMP! WOOOOO HOOOOOOO! LOOK MA, I'M FLYING!!! Flip. Easy. Release. Easy. THE CATCH! NAILED IT! WHAT A SCAM. We got a gift certificate for TSNY and were excited to register, only to discover that we needed to EACH pay $22 EXTRA to "register in their systems." I called to complain and was told, "yah we gotta pay our IT people something..." Such a scam, this is no way to do business. Just because you have a cool trapeze to swing on doesn't mean you can overcharge or treat your customers like crap! read more

The wife seriously only seems to enjoy things that require we sign a waiver to participate. However, this experience didn't have quite the high level of danger as we felt totally safe the entire time. It takes surprisingly little instruction to get started, but the instructions to progress were easy and helpful. Although the first swing, it really was such a rush, i had no idea what direction was up when i was told to point my feet. The instructors were all super friendly and great to work with. Climb up the ladder, get hooked up, grab the bar, ready, Hep. Swing freely through the air, bring your legs up, swing hanging from your knees with your hands dangling. Awesome. i was amazed how much we seemed to accomplish in the 2-hour beginners class. Right away, you're swinging from your knees and then end the day being caught by the instructor swinging from another bar. It definitely provides a rush and is a unique, worthwhile experience if you're visiting New York City. Yes, you will have various aches and pains for the next few days, but the awesomeness to tell people about your circus like feats is worth it. 4.5 STARS!!!! ....I LOVED it! :) ...It was cold and I would much prefer the outdoor trapeze but I did it indoors anyways :) 2 hours of the flying trapeze and we tried 2 catches already! My body is quite sore today but it was so fun I didn' really care! The staff was ok...some of which would be a little bit nicer...but the overall experience was priceless! Forget fear. Worry about the addiction. Oh how they nailed that!! I've put my fears to the flying trapeze twice now and each time I fall even more in love! Walk up the platform ladder. Slightly tremble with anxiety and anticipation of what lie ahead. Throw in some exhilarating heart beats and the smile of the cutie teacher. Step out to the edge of the platform. Take deep breath. Grab ahold of the swing. 1-2-3 jump. You fly. You soar. You wrap your legs around the swing and let go. Ahhhhhhhh the freedom. Ahhhhhh the immense joy and pride. Just when you nail the solo swing. I had a 1 hour Trampoline class this week. The class stared 15 min late and ended exactly at the end of the hour. There were 4 people in the class. So each had 10 min time on trampoline. Since we took turns I only could try it twice!! So, if you are thinking that 35$ is a reasonable price to try Trampoline for an hour think again! You are actually paying it for 10 min. per day!!! Two words: GO NOW. This is one of the most awesome things I've done in my life. I've heard and read about trapeze schools and circus camps for years. This is the first time I've had a good excuse to try it. We brought our 12 year old nephew, who's been in gymnastics for several years, to the city for his birthday. Once we mentioned it, it became clear that this would be the highlight of our weekend. And it was. So here we are: 2 40-somethings, not at all couch potatoes and in good shape, but certainly not acrobats. And the kid who's so excited he can't stand it. Here's how it goes: You arrive and watch the experts for a bit, all the while wishing you'd spent a little more time in the gym and maybe on the jungle gym at the park. You're suited up with your harness. Your instructors review the safety precautions and rules of the game. You do a short practice session on a low-hanging swing so you'll know what to do when it's time to go. Then your turn arrives. You climb the ladder while clipped in to the safety lines. (It makes me think of rock climbing) As you step on to the platform that's maybe 30 feet above the floor, you hold onto another ladder like structure as you instructor clips you into another set of safety lines. He helps you grab the swing and hold you in the proper position. Yes, you're shaking but just ignore that....you stand at the very edge of the platform, and on command, hop off. "Hop off??" you say? Yeah, it sounds scary but think of it this way--it's like jumping off the high dive. Except you're holding onto a swing and there's a net below you instead of cold water. And, you get to do cool stuff on your way down! You swing, loop your feet around the bar and hang upside down by your knees. Then you return your hands to the bar, drop your feet, swing a bit more and drop to the net. Each jump goes by so quickly you can't wait to do the next. After a few jumps, it's time for the next challenge-- your chance to execute a "catch". This is where you are grabbed by an instructor in mid air and it requires perfect timing. The amazing thing? It works! This is such an intense experience that you'll be surprisingly tired when the class is over. But no worries, if you're lucky enough to live in a city where a school is located, you can make it a regular workout. We all loved it and I hope I'll be back. Our instructors: Hal, Ross and Randy were careful, patient and encouraging. It was fun watching the other, more experienced students. Most of all, it was fun to get out of my routine and realize a dream! read more

I was watching a Sex and the City re-run (of course) and it just looked really fun. So I went this past October to the indoor location at 30th between 10th and 11th for my birthday and dragged my little sister with me. Surprisingly, it's not that hard! I have NO upper/lower body strength.. the momentum from the Trapeze carries you and all you really need to do is LISTEN to the instructor. I, myself, am a really bad listener so the first few times I swung, I couldn't get my knees up. But by the end of the two hour class I was swinging and even got caught. I just started a ten week intensive flying course (IFW) it's a better deal than buying classes one at a time and it's fun. Scary, yes..but it's really truly exhilarating. My body also feels beat up but in a good, I didn't know my body could hurt there type of way. Trapeze just doesn't feel like a work out but you're definitely working muscles you didn't know existed. I woke up the next morning and my abs and arms were SO SORE, but it was so worth it because I had an amazing first time. Now, I'm not usually afraid of heights but I got a little nervous and my legs were shaking as I stood over the ledge before the jump. But I quickly got used to it because the teachers are so patient and encouraging. TRUST THEM. You will be held on by a harness on the side and there is a safety net at the bottom to break your fall. Remember how freaking awesome gymnastics was? Ever wished they had adult gymnastics? Fu** yoga, this is where it's at! Gymnastics in the sky, baby! I've been here three times and learned a new trick every time! I was scared the first time. The instructors babysit you and walk you through it. Plus, you usually get to see them demonstrate it once. They are really good at knowing where everyone is at in their training, and what you are capable of. In one class, i saw a Very skilled grandma and six year old putting the rest of us to shame. If you have any inclination, you should do it. Plus, every trick is broken down to like three moves. Perfect. I hate the gym and have never enjoyed an exercise class. but this is pure fun.
