I love the place. I dont know about any past experiences of anyone else, but i can vouch for the gymnastics trainers and the attendees. Their great. We do warmups for about 25min, then our exercises are geared towards handstands, back tucks, front tucks, back handsprings, front handsprings, whip backs tumbling, you name it, we do it. We got rings, springboards, the balance beam, mushrooms, The youngest i have seen is teens, the oldest is 74 yrs old. If you want to learn something cool, and do something challenging instead of sitting around, come on bye. You can pay per class, you can pay by the course. In my opinion, its great. Theres nothing like this on meetup, or in Jersey. I learned handstands, and backflips. Bathrooms and locker rooms are both clean and tidy. Its all skill levels from total beginner to advanced. This long time neighborhood facility offers a wide variety of activities for children and adults. Unfortunately, the gymnasium suffers from neglect. There are numerous dead spots which adversely impact games that are played there. In addition, Sokol recently added Pickle Ball to its lineup. You will be gravely disappointed should you pay to play there. The court's back lines abut (literally) walls at the back of both ends of the court. read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY - RUDE, INEXPERIENCED STAFF / INADEQUATE EQUIPMENT Let me start by saying you will NEVER get a response via phone, email or stopping into the business because there is nobody in the office or people are unfriendly and unwilling to help. While the price is low, you get what you pay for. Classes [if you can call them that] or lack thereof are taught by 'coaches' who probably never even participated in the sport. During the children's classes, there is some weird class of old women who distracts the children. Class sizes are 2-3 students or appear to be. I was made aware of an adult class, so I observed one. Again, minimal attendees showed up with one I didn't realize was the instructor. Throughout the class, the 'regulars' seems to steal all of the instructor's attention, leaving little feedback for the 1-2 others. Reminded me of a middle school 'clique' Not friendly, helpful or approachable. read more

The gymnastics classes here are full of potential but end up entirely disappointing. The instructors seem to know their stuff, sadly, they have no control over their unruly classes. A big part of the problem here is that the classes seem to be used as some sort of overly expensive babysitting for some parents. They come, drop off their little hellions, and vanish until pick up time. Classes are supposed to run ninety-minutes, but the children wind up receiving only about half that time from their instructors once you count in the constant stopping for reprimands. Useless reprimands, mind you, since there's no actual punishment for misbehaving in class, or even for outright disobeying an instructor. Trouble-making students aren't so much as asked to sit on the sidelines so that class can continue. They're simply spoken to over and over again, without consequence, thereby eating up precious class time. Nothing is stable or predictable here, instructors switch out week to week without warning, their assistants are just older Sokol students who don't really care about helping with posture correction, or anything at all really. The school deserved the embarrassment that it faced a little over a year ago when a competition they hosted had to be stopped twice because the parents were as noisy and rowdy as their children, making it difficult for judges and participants to hear each other. Dear Sokol, wake up. You have potential. Start kicking unruly students out of class, start telling parents that their little hellions won't be welcomed back if they are not ready to get serious. Start caring. In the meantime, this place is a waste of time. Children who come wanting to actually learn something will leave sad, frustrated, and disappointed. read more

Let me start out by saying I'm a member at Sokol but only for about 3 years. I had been attending the adult gymnastic class for 10 years before joining but finally joined because it's awesome. What makes it awesome is it's an authentic neighborhood gym that supports the community, not one of those corporate gyms. That said, if you're looking for a fancy gym with a cafe (but it does have a BYOB bar) and towel services, this is not the place for you. It's an old school gymnasium that offers an assortment of classes: gymnastics is their staple but the also offer yoga, ballet, dance, basketball, volleyball, tae kwon do and they just added an aerial trapeze class. They also offer class for kids and babies. For gymnastics, let me just say this is not Chelsea Piers (an olympic training center), it's more laid back. People are really nice, supportive and not competitive. Skill levels are from absolute beginner to advanced. They just got an air track, it's a 40' long tumbling track filled with air (like one of those bouncy castles they have at street fairs but long), I really like that because it's much easier on the body than a spring floor. The gym has to be set up and torn down every class but it's not that time consuming. Best of all, after workout we sometime have food and drinks at the BYOB bar. read more

Unprofessional and unfriendly. Cancelled my daughter's registration for gymnastics classes only because I failed to pay the invoice the same day. The invoice was sent at 6pm without any clear instructions, and the next day I received a message that the invoice was cancelled and my daughter's spot was given away. They did nothing to fix the situation. The following communication was similarly unprofessional and rude. read more

We decided to enroll our daughter into Sokol gymnastics to try this location since it is much closer by, then Chelsea Piers , where our daughter took gymnastic classes the year before . To our disappointment we noticed she did learn very little in the past year, and we saw no progress in her class . The exercises she practices were all taught and mastered the year before at Chelsea piers , where her coaches take a very professional approach and are able to demonstrate each exercise themselves . The classes at Sokol can be more compared to children's playtime , instead of teaching gymnastics . Moreover when we were late 10 min due to heavy traffic , our daughter was not allowed to join her 90 min class , although warm up was still in process . It is sad that this institution is punishing children for a 10 minute lateness issue and ban them from participating in the class . It is a written protocol that they have all parents sign , I was told . We will not sign up for the next season ,make the long commute to Chelsea piers , where gymnastic lessons are taught in a more professional way . read more

Sokol's younger classes in the Toddler-Kindergarten gym downstairs are fabulous. Judith, the main teacher for the kids is absolutely the best gymnastics teacher! She has great command of the kids, always good spirited, genuinely caring, and really knows how to teach and engage the kids. There's a lot of joy in the rooms. She loves those kids and you can tell. I have two daughters who have learned for years from Judith and she's remarkable! The price can't be beat either. read more
