Not a normal school environment.... And that's not for the better. Solely based off the interview process, I would NOT work there nor send my children there. They were more focused on disciplining marginalized children of color, rather than discussing the set curriculum and education expectations and goals. To make matters worse, they force you to act out a scenario DISCIPLINING a grade school child. You're not allowed to use terms such as "this is a warning" and "don't let it happen again". They automatically want you to aggressively scream at a child with the following verbiage "[child's name] STOP TALKING! CONSEQUENCE!" If a number of consequences (6) occur, the child automatically goes to detention and then placed on a "watch list" for behavioral monitoring. It leaves no window for kids to be kids, but white--washed robots. Also, the recruiters for some reason try to play a mind game with you regarding a short haiku, "to better understand your train of thought". Long story short, the answer is mouse... the mouse's perceptive . See poem below for your reference if you decide to interview there. All in all, doesn't come off as a great institution and it's alarming that this place actually exist. Also, the work hours are insanely long. 10 hours + a day at the school, plus an additional 1-2 hours working once you're "off". You're not allowed to take sick days since they have no subs to replace you. They also emphasize being able to learn and take FEEDBACK as a teacher. Meaning, senior leadership will insult you and demean you (sometimes in front of the students) and you're obligated to take it and just say "understood. Thank you for your feedback." The culture seems extremely sketchy. It comes off as a cult-like entity. The recruiter I spoke with mentioned they were once a teacher there, but transitioned to HR/ recruitment just after 2 years of being there. HUGE RED FLAG!!!! I would not recommend sending a child to SAWB. The school policies are extremely rigid and expect 5-7-year-olds to behave like full-grown adults. Children are given almost no freedom, playtime, or opportunities for creativity. They are required to sit in the strict "magic five" position (look it up--it's harsh), walk through hallways in military-style lines, and follow directions with 100% compliance. The administration shows little tolerance for children's individuality--whether that's differences in personality, background, ability, or learning style. Any attempt to communicate concerns is met with a "take it or leave it" attitude. When we raised the issue that our child was terrified of a teacher to the point of crying daily, the principal dismissed it by saying "kids cry all the time." Policies are, in my view, inhumane. Even kindergartners are often not allowed to drink water or use the bathroom when they need to, which naturally leads to accidents. Academic support is equally disappointing. The school does nothing to challenge advanced students or to support those struggling under its extreme behavioral demands. The only consistent message we heard was: if you don't like it, you can leave. Staff morale also seems low. Teachers often appear unhappy, and turnover is high--several quit abruptly in the middle of the year. Families notice this instability, and many remove their children during the school year, leaving kids without friends as well as without consistency in their classrooms. At its core, this school prioritizes obedience and compliance over learning, growth, and joy. Children are not treated as children, but as small adults who must conform to strict rules. For families who want an environment that supports curiosity, play, individuality, and healthy development, SAWB is not it. Success Academy is honestly one of the worst places to send your child or to work--especially if you're hoping it will positively shape them from a young age or provide a healthy, supportive learning environment. While there are individual teachers who genuinely care and want students to succeed, the system itself is rigid, unforgiving, and prioritizes control and data over basic human needs. Even at the elementary level, bathroom breaks are not allowed during instruction because they are considered disruptive. Children are often ignored, scolded, or told to put their hand down if they ask at the "wrong" time, such as outside of snack or lunch. This creates intense anxiety, and some children are so afraid of getting in trouble that they pee themselves rather than ask to go. Fidgeting or movement of any kind is also not tolerated. Students are expected to sit completely still, bodies relaxed, hands folded at their desks or on the rug, and remain "alert" at all times. The focus is on compliance rather than understanding. If a child does not grasp something the first time and struggles to articulate their confusion, raising a hand to ask for help is often treated as a consequence--because they "should have been paying attention." From a teacher's perspective, especially as a first-year teacher, the environment is equally damaging. Teachers are ranked and compared against one another based on class performance metrics such as routines, desk habits, rug habits, line-ups, and how often students are sent to leadership. Feedback is frequently vague, critical, and framed as personal failure rather than professional growth. Teachers are told they are not "insistent" enough, that they lack belief in themselves and their students, and that they lack ownership if children do not comply--such as not moving their clip. Calling out of work due to personal emergencies is heavily penalized. Whether it is a death in the family, surgery, a serious illness, or even being in a car accident, teachers are still held responsible for their classroom and required to create a detailed coverage plan--regardless of their physical or emotional state. Even when in pain or barely able to function, teachers are expected to work through emergencies. There are no substitute teachers, and missed days often result in write-ups because the classroom is considered the teacher's responsibility alone. There is also no space for grief. If a teacher passes away, staff are expected to move on immediately. There is no time allotted to grieve, no ability to call out, and no meaningful acknowledgment of loss. Teachers are still held accountable for attendance and classroom plans during these moments. Teachers are treated as expendable. There is a constant pipeline of new, desperate college graduates ready to take their place. These individuals may shadow your classroom and work alongside you, only for you to be replaced without warning. Parents are often not notified--one day their child simply has a new teacher, and the relationships and trust that were built disappear overnight. Overall, this is a fear-based system that values optics, control, and data over learning, emotional safety, and human dignity. So I emailed Jamie to ask her if the job had been filled and she no I don't know why you received that email. And then she rescheduled the interview again for this morning. Well turns out I log on to my portal and she is a no show. Not only did she not show up she also blocked all communications with me. I tried her phone number and her email and both are blocked. I interviewed at this place a long time ago for an attorney job, and it was by far the worst job interview I've ever had. One of the interviewers asked me "Are you OK with being yelled at on a daily basis?" Um, what? So, apparently management verbally abuse their staff on a daily basis. The pay was garbage too, too little to warrant being verbally abused. You'd be better off working at Costco (both financially and mentally) than to work here. I genuinely think this school is run by mentally ill, crazy people. I wish I could give 0 stars. I'm a a 26 year veteran teacher in Delaware. A 2x state teacher of the year finalist. My 23 year old moved to Brooklyn in hopes of getting a theater production job and was going to work here u til they could get in full time. He described the teaching practices as abusive. No bathroom breaks for kids as young as 5, kids so full of anxiety they were throwing up in class (in a bag in front of everyone as they were not allowed to go to the bathroom. His training had NOTHING to do with curriculum or teaching strategies, it was only about instilling fear and intimidation, and was called out for not being "mean enough". They were taught how to keep the kids seated in their 5 point position and were told to put their hands in their shoulders to push them into their seats. After a week, my son quit and said he could not be complicit in creating a hostile, toxic and abusive environment. read more

I am a first year teacher, I was teaching first grade in ICT, I was also thrown into teaching first and second grade science. I knew about the difficulties about Success Academy prior to working there, but being the open minded person I could be, I gave it a fair chance, and it was honestly one of the worst job experiences I ever had. As a new teacher I did not feel very comfortable there. I just quit and walked out on the school, after being there for a month and some change. This place is a very toxic work environment and I don't recommend this place to anyone. The school treats the staff horribly. They treat staff more like robots than human beings especially us new teachers. The school is very military based for teachers and scholars (students) They were also not transparent about many things such as pay. They say it's 65k a year starting, and then when you're in they say it's really 55k s year and you get the 10k at the end of the year if you complete it. As for tuition reimbursement, they only have the Touro program, I didn't need it because I was already in a program but was told there was alternatives for me which wasn't true either. there is absolutely no work life balance , which they claim, they are strongly for (huge contradictions) they have you work from 7-5:30ish at times would keep you there as late as 6:00 with no further compensation. I at times barely got to use my preps for lessons or to eat my lunch due to meetings, staying with students for late pick up which would take up most of my lunch hour before the meeting, and other requirements they want. My last few days there I didn't get to eat hardly anything. They are unprepared with materials for lesson plans, their curriculum is all over the place. I was teaching first grade in a ICT classroom, and since the science teacher resigned, they added the responsibility of teaching 1st and second grade science on to me and one other teacher. And would treat us horribly if we didn't understand something or if we were behind their calendar pace. I would make efforts to help the students understand the content but the school just cared about being up to date with their pace. Not realizing it sets the students up for failure. Even to get a day off for an emergency they give you an extremely hard time for. Instead of just giving you the day that you're in your right to take because you have your days, they get more invasive into your business, they expect you to show some sort of documentation to prove you were where you said you were and try to push for ways to you to come into work and tell you to contact people in your grade team for coverage because they are not prepared with substitutes. When I had a family emergency these people did exactly that, they didn't care about the gravity of my situation nor considered if I was in the right state of mind to teach the students. This school has absolutely no respect for staff and their mental state. Bottom line this school has proven to care more about their reputation, than they do about their staff and students. If you're a believer in having a work life balance this place isn't for you, I'd say if you're a new teacher trying to get your cert, go into a different charter school or get into the DOE, with an internship certificate. read more

This has been THE MOST tramatizing employer that I have ever worked for. From the excessive micromanaging, to the 12-hour workdays 5 days a week, I was hired to be an Associate Teacher at SA Norwood, despite 1 week of training I was placed in a IPE Certified Classroom with no experience. PARENTS SHOULD BE ASHAMED to send their kids to this school, they are pyschological abusive to those students. I walked away from a pension, benefits, etc because I do not agree with the HARSH tactics. This school spends so much time on disciplining the classroom that the academic needs are not addressed. I was only employed for 2 weeks and not once taught a lesson. Parents stop supporting this nonsense while private interests are making millions off of your kids suffering are even worse than these middle age white women who grew up privledged, and out of touch with the emotional empathy needed for children to be successful, and able to reciprocate in working environments. Updating my review because, although I was really upset about how poorly they prepare you for the HS admissions process, overall the academics are strong and most of the teachers are fantastic. There are pros and cons just like any school - and the cons at SA may be different (some teachers are overly strict and some just plain mean; the HS thing; etc) in the end, the pros outweigh. I'm impressed with the student culture. Kids seem to be nice and respectful to one another, and I haven't seen any bullying with either of my kids, which is awesome for middle school. read more

My Experience - First coming in I had a great assessment team in which I shared the office as a Sprint team member. It was a great vibe and we cared and looked out for one another everyone loved our office that was my motto. Now Sprint itself was always overwhelmed we had someone who had been there for a year already when I entered. At the time she was given very last-minute deadlines and lack of support but was blamed for what was not done correctly or at all despite having a caseload of 70+ kids by herself. High Turnover rates are not new with SA for staff or teachers. Now I've made mistakes but I take accountability and they take none. They'll say things like manage up but when you do they tell you it's your responsibility to find coverage if you reach out for help. It's all smiles when they offer help but often criticize your ability to do your job if you do. I've seen teachers open up to me with tears in their eyes and go to the bathroom telling me how they are not supported. I experienced the same with leadership and I am very vocal which is a no-no if you work at SA. They like people they can leverage which is why staff changes a lot and teachers are young and inexperienced. I would go to Network training and they would talk about how bad teachers and parents are behind their backs. But then tell us we don't care about the parents when we don't refer 5 kiddos a week as they like to say. Yes, refer 5 kids a week!! This means you essentially want every kid under Special Education because the more kids the more funding. Mrs. B who is currently the stand in SL until April told us if we can't reach a parent after 2 calls, the protocol should be to call CPS. They are money-hungry and will find a way to get you out if you are unwilling to do whatever it takes to grab referrals. If you have morals or integrity this job will be hard for you. Inside conversations with other co-workers say the same thing I'm writing in private conversations. When we didn't hit our numbers a senior specialist named Mr. M came in to help our school he was extremely rude to us but did help a bit, but was so result driven he disrespected your time and felt ok to speak with you however he wants if you failed to meet expectations. I had a conversation with the BOM who is known as Ms.K. I spoke with her about how I felt unsupported. That was a deadly mistake in their eyes despite me having 6 duties unrelated to my job that took about 3 hours of my duty described as they like to say additional duties. She went straight to Mrs.B and after that convo I was brought in and a day later I was brought back in and told if things persisted I was up for termination. The email itself stated we've noticed concerning behavior even though I was told I should be proud of myself the week prior. A week later I missed two 3-minute meetings and was told 2 days later because of these extra mistakes, they had to let me go despite getting one referral every week since Mr. M came to help us. On my last day, after they let me go I was stripped of my laptop and keys and was walked to get my stuff. My other two team members who I worked alongside for months were kept in another room and were not let go until I left the building. I was being treated as if I was a criminal. I left very calmly although I was justified to show some emotion. As I left I saw the BOM who is known as Ms.K, the SL Mrs. B, and Ms.T one of the APs all smirking at me as I looked on from outside the building. Pros - You will meet some great people colleagues and teachers included and they do supply snacks which show as a benefit. You do learn how to manage heavy workloads which is a great experience on your resume. Cons - They always tell you to manage up but when you look for solutions they say it's your responsibility. A hiring recruiter reached out to ME for a position claiming they saw my resume and thought I would be a good fit for the team. Wanting a more challenging position from what I currently have, I gladly accepted the offer! I correctly applied and scheduled the interview which only had a few slots open which happened to land on days I work. There were no later times to choose from. Attempting to pose a question, I emailed Hanna Fuller if I could reschedule the interview. I can't interview AND work at the same time... She responded quickly. But merely and instantaneously canceled my interview--which there was still plenty off time to prepare for--claiming she had no time for me cancelling on her... This school claims to be "open" to Special Education students, well they ABSOLUTELY LIED. They're too busy focusing on getting all the students they can to keep their doors opened because they're a Charter School . My little brother has been accepted 3 times for different grades because my mom believes that this could be the best school for him. The first time he was denied because of his IEP. The second time, we were told he was going to attend one specifically for his IEP and when the first day of school comes around, they said "we don't have accommodations for his type of IEP at this location" and sent him back home. My mom kept trying and finally by the third time he was accepted again into the "special education" program that accommodates his IEP. My brother went through the summer intensive program, received the uniform, went to orientation, and the first/second day of school. On the THIRD day, he received academic detention because of homework. Homework that he spent HOURS on the night prior. We knew this school was going to be intense, so we helped out with what we could. I knew from the beginning that this school was not meant to be because of the previous encounters but THIS WAS THE CHERRY ON TOP. They kept him in detention to "go over the homework" and had my mother come in just to tell her that he was not cut out to be in this type of educational environment. Stripped away their laptop in his face and had him crying on his way out with my mother. He was so excited and determined to be apart of this community and these people basically just wasted his time. If this is how you're going to treat Special Education students, who are just seeking out the same education as others who may not have the same struggle as them, then you can for sure kick rocks! So, if you have a special education child and are debating on whether or not you want them to attend this school, make sure you do your research beforehand and ask as many questions as possible regarding their disabilities/IEPs. I am deeply disturbed and upset with Success Academy Charter Schools conduct today. I was instructed to come to 120 Wall Street for a Teacher group interview final round after applying for the Associate Teacher position. In the email that was sent from Kate Karraker on June 12, 2019 and again on June 20, 2019; I was instructed to arrive between 9:30AM-9:45AM. I arrived at 9:31AM and walked up to the security desk as instructed and informed the security guard that I was there for an interview. The security guard instructed me that my name was not on a list and to wait aside. I waited for 13 minutes before being signaled by the security guard to come over and speak to someone on a telephone receiver he was holding up. The person on the other end did not state her name but said to me, "Who told you to come here today?" I informed her I was contacted via email by Ms. Karraker. She then asked for me to spell my name and then asked for my telephone number. When I gave her all of that information she then said "We will get back to you" and I was instructed to pass the phone to another candidate who was in the same situation as me waiting to speak to the voice on the phone. I waited an additional 5 minutes before deciding that this might not be the best fit for me because of the unprofessionalism. I left the building and started my commute back home. I don't quite understand why my name was not listed as a candidate to come to the 6th floor for the interviews. Ms. Karraker stated in her second email sent at 1:19PM yesterday, "To confirm your attendance, please respond back within 24 hours to this email." My response email was sent at 1:55PM that day. My response should have been recorded and my name should have been on the list. I followed the directions and did my part. What else is interesting is all the Caucasian applicants were allowed entry, while the lady of color and myself were not. I hope what happened to me doesn't ever happen to another candidate who applies to your school again for a teaching position. It's really unfortunate and disheartening. I received a condescending email reply from Ms. Karraker saying, "Thank you for letting us know. We wish you the best of luck on your future endeavors." How inappropriate. read more

is there anything lower than 1 star? As a parent of a very happy 4 year old boy, who receives Speech and OT, this school (Washington Heights location) was the worse option I could have ever chosen. Their military style and lack of empathy and understanding of certain situation with little ones was a horrific thing to see. I do not recommend this school to any parent. I legit went through the most horrendous experience in a matter of months and had to change school, where he is happier now and receiving the attention and education he deserves. They do not provide much resources although they act like they are trying to help. This school puts the most ridiculous expectation on the students and are not equipped to accept children with IEPs. This is the WORST school with even worse teachers. Their curriculum is not age or grade-appropriate. They set children up for failure and refuse to accept the fact that they are so clueless. If your child is already doing well, has an extremely great grasp of above grade level work, and enjoys working in isolation and without peer and teacher support, then Success Charter schools may be right for you. Their pedagogy probably works well with students who can progress on their own because the teachers basically suck! On the other hand, if your child needs support, just forget about it because they aren't about supporting individual learning needs. Above all else, if your child is black or brown, don't go to the middle school in Hudson Yards...I mean this very seriously!! The teachers and especially the administration do not have your best interest in mind. My goddaughter attended this school and as a retired educator with 38 years of experience, I was appalled with the lack of interest, care and follow up that she experienced. I'm talking about a bright, eager and well mannered child who deserved so much better from that school. They tried their hardest to hold her back because she was absent for critical state testing. Her mother made repeated attempts to schedule her make up testing but the administration totally ignored her beyond the deadline. Who does that??? I was a school principal for many years, and I supported other principals after that, and I never once met a principal who treated a family with such ill contempt. Educators are supposed to work with families, to assist them and guide them. This school does the opposite and it's reprehensible that they instead go out of their way to make life difficult and create barriers for families. And btw, without this schools support, the family took necessary steps to make sure that my goddaughter was promoted!! Because Lawyers and Board of Education don't want to do their job here it is. My son Kaleb (5 years old) attended Success Academy Bergen Beach in Brooklyn. We have been told hw has ADHD a little bit of counseling some vitamins and patience is all he needs. He is super hyper super happy always laughing and singing. This school was a nightmare for ALL of us! He was there from August when school started to November before break. They suspended him in total 11 days for running and "unsafe bodies". They would call us all day long complaining about Kaleb how he doesn't stand still/doesn't go down the stairs or halls in straight line/keep his hands interlocked/etc.... he wasn't allowed to breathe the wrong way without them pulling him out of class and calling me or Jayvette. People that we have talked to about this school all they have to hear is the name of the school and they already know or have experienced the nonsense that happens in this school. My problem is that Kaleb would cry when I had to take him to school he was acting out really bad having super bad tantrums and basically going backwards. Every time we had to sit down and talk to the principle or assistant principle I had to hear their fake-ness. Or saying this school isn't going to "mold" for Kaleb and maybe you should look elsewhere. First of all why does your school say that you welcome all kids even once that are "special" when in reality you don't? That is because they have to to be able to be considered a charter school. These pictures of a book the psychologist made of Kaleb these were the worst of the pictures. It broke my heart and breaks my heart that I sit down with lawyers or call and they just say we are aware of Success Academy and there nothing you can do but take him out of the school. This is bullshit (excuse my language) how is it people have common stories common issues and legally this isn't right but hey we are not going to stop them? That makes absolutely no sense! if I could zero stars I would. we are two months into the school year and could not be more disappointed. please do not enroll your children here from the poor communication of the staff. To the very unrealistic expectations they have of very small children. They are making this a terrible experience for my young child who use to enjoy getting up and going to school. Every time you have a concern they say that is our policy. Two weeks into the school year they changed the principal. And they changed my child's teacher right after. We not even two full months into the school year. They are reprimanded 5&6 years who have 8 hours long school days for talking, laughing and playing. This is an abusive militants terrible school to put your kids in. Their tone of voices are not nice. They command to small kids to follow the most ridiculous instructions. If you are looking for your kids to be emotionally healthy, this is NOT school to send to. Emotionally abusive. Having a good grade doesn't mean anything if they grow up to be emotionally and psychologically damaged in the future. There are so many better educational systems in NY, this is NOT one of them. Even a naturally intelligent child with kind heart will destroyed by this kind of education. coming from a student: i wouldn't recommend it its very very draining and i barely have time after school for activities, etc. ive been begging my parents to change my school but they say that they think success is good for me. in the classrooms, yeah it may look pretty but its all fun and games until you become a student and the work overload begins.. honestly if i could show my parents how cruel it is i think they would change their mind... im currently in middle school and i havent felt any worse as of right now. they give detentions for ridiculous reasons like "not showing work" or "not putting in effort" i mean, really, what did you expect, i put in all my blood sweat and tears for a 70? the only good thing about it is the longer winter break (2 weeks) from most public schools, its 1 week, but yet again we get piles... and piles of homework... its all fun and games in the first 4 years, but then comes middle school.. dont even get me started on high school. Speaking on behalf of Success Academy Bushwick. First of all they open their schools in low income neighborhoods, but these principals and teachers are completely out of touch with the low income communities. My son attended last year for kindergarten only to be treated poorly by his teacher because he was a challenge for her in certain subjects and was a talkative student. She was obviously the kind of teacher that only favors cookie cut outs that make her job easier and collect an easy check without much effort. Their Anti bullying policy is trash. My son was kicked in his genitals twice by the same child, and was pissed on by another student in the school bathroom. They did nothing to contact me after he was peed on and these bullies faced little to no consequence. We knew we had to leave NY state since teachers union protects a teachers title first before a students safety. S.A has no interest in the well being of your child, just mental abuse to get the high test scores also. He was biting the skin off his hands, experienced depression, and unhealthy weight loss due to the stress he was under there.
