Still catching up on reviews/pics from our trip to N Italy earlier this year. We spent a day…read moretraveling Lake Iseo by boat, and in spite of some rain, it was breathtakingly beautiful! We stopped on the big island in the lake for lunch, and chose Hostaria Milago... which was packed with locals! Always a good sign! The meal was fabulous, fresh caught fish, veggies, dessert and bubbles! All delicious! Highly recommend Hostaria Milago!

Our thought was to order a couple of drinks for our party of five, and both of those dishes as apps to share. It was only after we ordered the two apps that the waitress informed us we couldn't just share the food -- we each needed to order an entree as well. For some reason, we didn't just get up and leave, so we ended up having a lot more food (and paying a lot more money) than we had intended. Caveat emptor. That said, all the food we ordered (including those two dishes) was quite tasty, the (apologetic) waitress gave us friendly service (besides the house policy), and the view of the lake was pretty nice. (There were some adult tourists dining there who let their kids run around screaming and chasing each other and running across the street to feed the ducks and screaming some more, but that's not really the restaurant's fault.) Net-net -- a decent place to eat, but only if you know the house rules and are ready to eat a lot.

If you are walking from the ferry docks at Peschiera M. towards Sensole it is the first place on the water side of the road past the hubbub. This place is lovely with an outdoor patio hanging out over the water with a terrific view of San Paolo Island. The entrance is not clearly marked and the place looks like a private house. I love everything about this place! I've had lunch there a couple of times. It is very inexpensive healthy home cooking with a different handwritten menu everyday which is a dead give away for a good meal! (So welcome after days of point and order picture menus, it was a needed break from paninis and pizza). It is only open for lunch from 12-2pm (I think everyday?) and each dish on the menu is between 8-11 Euros. Order a bottle of fizzante (water with gas) and a local birra alla spina (beer on tap). Sit back and enjoy the view. The waitresses don't speak any English, not even a little bit, but they are friendly and professional. You will need your Google translate for this lunch but worth it. It is not a first course/second course place and each dish on the menu is just enough for a light lunch. However, you might want to order the BIG SALAD of the day just to share as a second course BUT I was so happy to have the "Insalata di Carpaccio di Trota" by itself for lunch. The first good big mixed salad I've found in Italy (third trip). The trout salad is a big green salad with veggies and thin smoked local lake trout, which is very similar to a good smoked salmon. The turkey and vegetables "Insatata di tacchino e vendure" was not a salad but very healthy and tasty. The "pasta Mediterranea" also had lots of veggies in there. See photos. It is better just to go into the bar area to pay your bill than to ask for a check. You can leave some money in the collection can for the cat sanctuary across the street...think lots of cats in a large high fenced area living the life of luxury. And those ducks and swans floating in the water below...they really are looking at you and want your left over bread bits.

We enjoyed a typical Italian meal (i.e. 2+ hours) during a long weekend in Brenzone sul Garda, one of many picturesque towns on the lake, just a few minutes up the road from Umberto's. We started with the Gran Frito Misto. Even though it was listed in the menu as a secondi, our waiter humored us and let us have it as an antipasti. The assortment of fried seafood and veggies was delish! I loved the calamari and shrimp. Even the sardines weren't bad! After that, we moved on to antipasti and secondi. My sister and I ordered the lasagne because it's a minimum 2 person dish. My hubby ordered the steak because... well... men like red meat? Y'all. I need to wax poetic about this lasagna for a minute. It was super creamy, bubbly and hot. Layers and layers of fresh noodles with a savory meat ragu sauce on top and prosciutto cotto and mushrooms sprinkled throughout. All served in a GIANT cauldron, easily enough for four people even though it was billed as a two person dish. The steak was good, too. And, we also enjoyed the sautéed potatoes. But seriously. Get. The. Lasagna. If you are still reading at this point (why aren't you on your way to Lake Garda for the lasagna?!), I suppose my last anecdote is that the house red wine was delicious.
