Trattoria dei Cartari helped make my pasta Tour de Italia complete, by serving up some of the best carbonara I've ever tried in my life. Service-wise, the staff was great. Despite the fact that they questioned why my party of 8 wanted to sit inside ("perche oggi fa molto caldo!!" was my reply) we were all seated and set up promptly, with the food coming out at a decent speed for us hungry, fast-paced Americans. The carbonara made my heart stop. First because of all the glorious butter and bacon mixed in the dish, then metaphorically because I loved it. If I could have carbonara from anywhere on this planet, I'd ask that it be cooked at this place. The other dishes my friends ordered (lemon pasta, pizza) were just okay for me, so I was really appreciative that I ordered what I did! All in all, the quality, service, price, and distance from the hoards of tourists at the bottom of the town all made this a great experience! We had a wonderful day in Amalfi and thought we would enjoy a nice lunch with some wine and pizza. We saw several restaurants on our walk up the street but we saw this place at the top of the street, read the menu and decided to stop. It turns out it was a big mistake. The server was very rude and we felt like he did not like tourists. We wanted to sample some local wine so we ordered a white and a red. When we saw him pour the red wine out of a box we knew we made a mistake coming here. The white wine was fair but, the red tasted like it came from a box. There was only one other couple in the place yet, it took us having to ask to get something ordered. We each ordered a pizza and they were just OK. The server barely spoke and when he brought the check he never even said "thank you". If you are looking for a nice lunch try someplace else. You will not feel welcome here. read more

Simply amazing local cuisine! Everything was extremely fresh and delicious! We wandered upon this little restaurant while looking for another restaurant. The staff was so friendly and invited us in for wine. We ended up ordering dinner! We weren't even hungry, but ended up ordering anyway and ate every morsel! It was absolutely one of the best meals we've had since our arrival in italy! We ordered the Bruschetta (the bread was soft snd crunchy, the tomatoes local,sweet and fresh!) We also had linguine con scampi. The shrimp was actually sweet out the shell and pasta perfectly prepared! The mixed green salad was the freshest we had in italy, plus we had a half carafe of the amazing house red wine and all for under $40! ! We can't say enough about this quaint family style restaurant. My dad is an Italian cook so finding good food in Italy was actually harder than I thought it would be but this was the best restaurant I went to. I went to rome Naples and Amalfi and this place was by far my favorite. It's a beautiful family owned restaurant. The staff is so kind and attentive and the food is so fresh and delicious. A quaint trattoria located just far away enough from the of the main Amalfi square to escape the crowds. Authentic food and wine a just the right price too. We indulged in in several courses- smoked fried provolone on a lemon leaf, eggplant parmigiana, bruschetta and stuffed calamari. The starters alone could've been dinner! The pasta with seafood was fresh as can be and somehow we even had room for the fresh catch of the day. A whole fish served with roasted tomato and potatoes. Of course we enjoyed a local white wine for our delicious meal. This is a family style, casual eatery with solid local seafood offerings. read more

What a great find! Was recommended by Bob, a friendly tourist who had been in Amalfi for 10 days. Friendly staff, very untouristy feel. Open kitchen where you can see the whole family working together to cook. Napoli style pizzas are delicious, perfect crust. Fun to watch the family toss the dough, prep the pizzas and put them in and pull them out of the oven. Even better than the pizzas were the scialatielli with eggplant and smoked mozzarella (local specialty) and the catch of the day all'acqua pazza. Hosted a party of 20 here. The food was very fresh and unique. They were kind enough to allow those who did not eat seafood to make substitutions. We had Caprisi salad, Octapus with arugula and lemon, risotto with seafood, and a lemon spagitti. For desert we were served lemon cream puffs. It's a very local restaurant serving local clients. The owner is extremely kind, and served us pitchers of fresh white wine. The food is fresh and low key compared to other places that serve the same item by the same name. The price is very good, and the property homey. Don't be fooled by the exterior which is not spruced up like other spots to attract tourists. read more
