One of the places recommended by our tour guide, it seemed relatively busy on a Thursday lunchtime,…read moreand seemed to have two of the local dishes we wanted to try -- the sardina essiccata and the local salumi. Our thought was to order a couple of drinks for our party of five, and both of those dishes as apps to share. It was only after we ordered the two apps that the waitress informed us we couldn't just share the food -- we each needed to order an entree as well. For some reason, we didn't just get up and leave, so we ended up having a lot more food (and paying a lot more money) than we had intended. Caveat emptor. That said, all the food we ordered (including those two dishes) was quite tasty, the (apologetic) waitress gave us friendly service (besides the house policy), and the view of the lake was pretty nice. (There were some adult tourists dining there who let their kids run around screaming and chasing each other and running across the street to feed the ducks and screaming some more, but that's not really the restaurant's fault.) Net-net -- a decent place to eat, but only if you know the house rules and are ready to eat a lot.

This was the most amazing meal we ate in three weeks in Italy -- and we ate loads of great food…read more L'Evangelista is a vey upscale restaurant on a quiet street a block off the main pedestrian thoroughfare. While it follows the form of apertivo, primi, segundi, dolci, this is not traditional Italian cuisine but what I've seen termed as "Italian contemporary cuisine." That means world class, innovative food. And we loved it. Simone Ferrigno, the manager, greeted us when we arrived and seated us at an elegantly laid out table. We ordered wine and our food, and the show began with beautiful dish after beautiful dish. And fabulous wines. We chatted with the German couple at the next table who had ordered the vegan tasting menu and they were in heaven. Alas I cannot for the life of me find the receipt with the names of the dishes we ordered. If I find it, I'll update my review. I'll just say this, exquisite food, world-class service in a beautiful ambience. After we had paid our bill (thank goodness the dollar is up relative to the Euro) and we started walking away, Simone ran after us to ask how our experience was and to thank us for our patronage. Note: A reservation is essential at L'Evangelista. I just noticed that Yelp has two Euro symbols to indicate the price is moderate. I'd actually give it four Euro symbols. L'Evangelista is not for you if you're on a tight a budget.

They needed a little extra help this night as I think there was only one server. There was also a private party in the back. Wine selections are mostly organic (if not all). Reasonable prices too. We ordered a bread plate, cheese plate, seitan steak, and pizza (not shown). When we sat down, we were told there was no vegan mozzarella. This changed a few dishes for sure. The pizza would have been much better with it, but was still very good. The cheese platter and seitan steak were stand outs for us. The vegan cheeses made by the owner would make any omnivore go vegan. In fact, we came back the next day to purchase cheese and dessert to go. Soooo worth it. I wish they shipped to the US. Had we stayed longer, we would have eaten here every other day. We will definitely be back. This is the best vegan Italian restaurant in Milan!

I'm glad we did because it because it was one of the best mid-day meals of our entire two week trip through Italy, Germany and Austria. La Vegana is a small, unassuming restaurant and shop in a quiet neighborhood. There are a few tables for eating in but it appears to me that much of their business is take away and selling vegan grocery items. The menu for the day is written out on a chalk board. We were able to decipher it with no problem but if your Italian is marginal the woman at the counter spoke excellent English and was helpful in making our selections. I ordered ravioli spinaci. It was very good. I ate vegan ravioli three times while in Italy, once when we made it ourselves in a cooking class in Como, then at an upscale vegan restaurant in Venezia, and finally here at La Vegana. The ravioli at La Vegana was not as fancy as at the restaurant in Venezia -- but the taste was just as good. The ravioli we made ourselves was also good -- but we're just beginners when it comes to making pasta. My traveling companions report that they also enjoyed there selections. If you are a vegan and looking for good vegan food in Ferrara, I recommend La Vegana. They open at 11:00am and close at 9:00pm. It is worth seeking out.
