This charming little place has a wonderful atmosphere and great staff, but the most important thing here is the food. Food is king. Starting out with a small and carefully crafted menu when it first opened, largely focused around delicious stone baked pizzas, I'm delighted to see it has now grown into a varied Italian selection that offers a variety of dishes, brunch and home delivery. When in the depths of a female crisis nothing comes to the rescue better than fantastic Italian food and tasty wine. That is exactly what I found here while dining with two of my lady friends. Firstly, we weren't rushed as we gossiped over the menu and asked various annoying questions about the wine and dishes and secondly, the food was wholesome comforting and just what we needed. Freshly made pastas and pizzas, I ate a creamy crunchy risotto and hand many forks delve into the bowl during the night. the wine is slightly price if you ask me, they have a corkage charge which bumps it up a few quid and the decor is nice but totally plays down the wonderfulness of the food. My wife and I had one of our first dates here and have been back several times since then. Their pizza is very high quality but the stand out is their zucchini friti. This is the best example of zucchini friti I have ever had. Unfortunately the price stands out quite a lot too! A friend and I once also had them make us a sandwich to eat on the green on a day out, which was delicious. Having moved in not far away we decided to try getting some of their food delivery. The food took well over an hour and more than 30 minutes to get from restaurant to our door, even though you could walk there and back in that time. We gave up in the end but at least we had a phone call afterwards from the manager to apologise, so we tried again and had another terrible delivery experience so I didn't think we would be trying that again! But we did, their food is worth it, and everything went very smoothly. But then recently we have had cold pizza issues too...so have been reluctant and have looked for delivery alternatives. If they could figure this out we'd be ordering from them every couple of weeks and I would be giving them a 4 or 5 star rating. read more

We've been in multiple times, even before moving to this area, and have now even ordered from them a few times for delivery. The delivery experiences have been nothing short of a hot mess, but I think that they might have gotten that straightened out after some chats with them about it, so I'll focus my review on our experiences eating there. When I first moved to London, the hubs and me decided to have regular date nights. We took turns planning and selecting a location to try, and if it wasn't our very first location, it was certainly one of the first. We've tried multiple things from the menu, but at this point, we know our favourites. While the pasta has been great, we adore their pizza. We usually get the Margherita and add pesto to it. Delicious. The best fried courgettes I've ever had come from Trattoria Sapori. The batter is light and crispy, perfectly salted, and just crazy good. The £7.50 price tag is steep for the amount you get, but we can't not get it when we order. I don't recall the name, but I ordered some melty middled chocolate cake, and wow! So divine. The staff has always been very friendly and accommodating, and I love the design of the place. It has such a nice feel to it, whether you eat inside or outside. I'd sort of forgotten about this place, and only went for brunch because Tangerina was inexplicably closed. We waited half an hour for our food, and it was just HILARIOUSLY bad when it came. We had Eggs Benedict and a baked egg dish with pancetta - both seemingly cooked by someone who had never been in a kitchen before. The baked eggs dish was inedible - baked to brick-consistency, with gristly meat. The poached eggs on the Benedict had endured some terrible kind of trauma, and it was difficult to work out if the two tiny spoonfuls of orange "something" on top of each was the remnant of a yolk or an homage to hollandaise. The muffin (or was it? difficult to tell) was cold and was either stale or had been toasted at some point much earlier that morning. Came here after rock climbing for some lunch but I wasnt too hungry. Ended up getting the anitpasto platter which had meat and cheese and green olives and a little rocket side salad. It came with crusty bread too, actually very filling. Glass of house red and that. Perfect. My friend got a pizza that was decently priced and huge! Who knew mondays could be so good!? I'd passed Trattoria Sapori a few times, but when I heard about their monday night movie/pizza deal I decided it was time to check it out. What a find! I reserved for two, and we were ushered into the back room where a largish flat screen was mounted to a wall. It was big enough, and a cozy little atmosphere for movie watching. I had loads of trouble ordering! EVERYTHING looked delicious!! I do have a soft spot for Italian food though. A drink was included in the £10 deal, so I made that a glass of wine. My pizza and my friend's calzone were both delicious - really authentic, tasty, ummm (I'm teasing myself into going back just thinking about it!). I was surprised. I thought that for £10 they would've skimped on quality or not included drinks, or....something. But everything was great! I would go there for £10 just for a pizza. I'm really happy to have found this little treasure so close to my house. I will be making a trip back there soon! read more

So went to the Trattoria to cure an epic hang over from an all nighter. It was a beautiful sunny day, but a bit cool, so decided to get seated inside, instead of the lovely outdoor seating that they have. I can appreciate the confusion in terms of ordering your food. In fact, I think it is this confusion that probably lies in the 3 star review rather than a higher rating. I decided to go straight to the counter, as I didn't see any menus on the table. The counter has some pizzas, calzones, arancinis, croquettes and stuff. I was told that if I ordered to have here, then I'd be charged extra for salad, which I was fine with. I also ordered a detox juice, to accelerate my recovery. I then proceeded to get seated; shortly thereafter, a server comes along with some menus, but I tell her that I've already ordered at the counter. Imagine my disappointment when, looking at the menu, I see that you can order stuff that's not at the counter! Had I known, I would have gone from the menu! So I felt a bit cheated; not their fault entirely, but felt that my experience was going to be sub-par... The food that I ordered was ok; the pizza was nice enough (Italian sausage, peppers), and the sausage it came with was very flavourful. The arancini was actually excellent, with a delicate balance between rice and ragu, which I thought was nice. The juice was refreshing, the coffee excellent, and the coffee cake was pretty good (not the best, but decent enough). The service was ok... although they really need to get their 'order capture' process sorted out. I may come back, go on the menu, and update my review accordingly. Uh oh- why am I sitting funny? Ah - the farmhouse tables are wayyy too low for the chairs. Shame - great people but little details are wrong. The easy stuff to change! When I arrived a magnificent Italian hipster in beard and braces warmly welcomed me in. I tried the renowned juices with the Freshing Up Juice (pear, cucumber and ginger) Zingy. An expensive treat given the tiny cup. I get fed up waiting in an empty restaurant for service that I order at the counter: the carbonara. staying on the cheaper side of the menu. Courgette sticks for £7.50? But all the pizzas can be gluten free if you wish. I've had mixed experiences here; I love heading here for brunch or for a coffee mid-afternoon, but eating out here I'd not really worth the money. So, 4* for brunch, 3* for dinner. You can sit at the bench tables overlooking Newington Green which is really nice and relaxing. The dining area is quite hemmed in. My boyfriend and I headed here for pizza one evening (about a year ago now). We were seated by a tiny wooden table which was a mere few inches from a party of eight. It wasn't exactly a romantic, intimate meal and the waiter was slightly arrogant and took ages just to bring us water... He then seemed pissed off we wanted the bill, took a while to bring to us, and then didn't come back! So we headed to the counter and eventually were allowed to end our meal. read more

Came here for a family do and it was just perfect for such an occasion: great menu choices for all ages, interesting variety of wines, beers and dishes and visually interesting surroundings. They'd come up with some really imaginative dishes for Halloween (including a risotto in a hollowed-out pumpkin!) and the place is full of nice touches. This is a very 'stokey', trendy place and thus a bit pricey to pop back more than once in a while (they also forgot to remove a few cancelled items from our bill, which stopped me from giving a five star rating even though it was dealt with swiftly when we pointed it out) but definitely a lovely place to visit for special occasions and the odd lunchtime treat. read more

The food here is consistently wonderful but the quality of service is mixed. Sometimes I've had servers who were an absolute delight, making good humoured small talk and suggesting menu modifications that would better suit our requests. Other times I've had servers who seemed disinterested and offered the bare minimum for customer service; luckily these servers don't tend to stick around so the experience is usually the former! However, the food is what keeps me coming back on the regular. (And more times than I want to admit when I lived nearby!) I arrived 6:30pm on Friday and said I was meeting someone for drinks and lived locally which seemed ok at first but was abruptly interrupted twice during my meeting to make it quick if we weren't eating; even though at the 1st interruption I said we wouldn't be longer than an hour. What can I conclude on my 300th review? That I eat too much? That I drink too much? That I'm easily swayed by the sight of cold glass of wine and the smell of garlic on...well, pretty much anything? Yes, yes and yes again! But more importantly, review number 300 makes me smile a little at the number of impressive, local businesses that pack more punch than their tiny exterior might suggest and continue to offer top quality cooking despite this credit crunch malarkey! I'm glad to say at this milestone that the business I've chosen to review, Trattoria Sapori, is no exception to this rule- local, delicious and waiting to have YELP written all over it! This little place on the corner of Newington Green used to be Relish. While personally I didn't mind this cafe too much I know a lot of people suffered pretty terrible service and tellingly it only survived here for 6 months. Warning- don't mess with the Newington Green foodies- they know there stuff! Thankfully, Trattoria Sapori seems to have learnt from Relish's mistakes and I have to say service was great. A lovely Australian girl sat us down, offered us wine and, after apologising that their wine coolers hadn't arrived yet, offered to kept the bottle cold in the fridge for us. This laid back style felt very homely and made us instantly relaxed. To start we shared some calamari with aioli. I'm pretty sure this order threw the kitchen a little and I suspect they must have run out of aioli and very quickly had to knock together some more. Fortunately, we were offered some complimentary olives to make the wait more comfortable and when the dish arrived, even though the aioli was on the verge of splitting, it was homemade, delicious and punchy. Yum! Now on to the main courses. While I tried to keep it discreet a few of you will already know that I gave up bread and pasta for lent. This was more a test of endurance than a diet thing- if anything I love carbs too much and just wanted to see if I could survive without them. Good news- 40 days and 40 nights later I concluded, yes I could survive...now quick, hand me a slice of pizza!!! Being the first piece of bread I'd tasted since February, Trattoria Sapori's pizza had A LOT to live up to but b-hoy was it worth the wait. Fanfare, trumpets, fireworks this pizza is good! I went for the mozzarella, parma ham and rocket number (with a few mushrooms thrown in for good measure). Not only did they have the smarts to put the rocket and ham on after the pizza was cooked (who wants cooked rocket? it's like eating string!) but also they crumbled some extra fresh mozzarella over the top. Biting into little balls of seasoned creamy mozzarella- SO GOOD! My boyfriend raved about his smell fest of a pizza too- olives, anchovies and capers- but I was too in love with my own to stray to another. Why then I hear you ask does Trattoria Sapori only get 4 stars? Well, there are a few ambiance tweeks to be made before I can give it full marks. With the food and wine reaching such a high standard and the prices being so reasonable (pizza's are between £7 and £11) the dining room require a little more cohesion. During the day this place does a great trade as a cafe/deli and has a constant stream of kids coming in and out in pushchairs. Due to this I spent my night staring at a small high chair mountain rather than the pretty painting behind. I'm sure it wouldn't take a lot of effort to push this back a bit. And also, while the owner was lovely and very chatty, it's a little off putting watching him and the chef walking in and out of the restaurant. These issues are quite minor though and I know I'll be back in Trattoria Sapori soon regardless of them. And with this ridiculously long review I give another tick to the Newington Green foodie box- man I love living here! read more

I've been here a lot since it's been open and, while I do really like it, I have to say I find it a bit hit and miss. The food is generally fantastic - great pizza and excellent pastas; however I've also had their Italian breakfast which was really poor and not worth coming back for. The service is friendly but a little scattered (as is the manager). It is really great if you're coming with kids; they've finally organised the back room a bit better so you can actually sit at a table (or comfy sofas) but still let you little 'uns run around without bothering other diners. So being just up the road, the husband and I decided to try Trattoria Sapori last night after reading the other reviews. When we got there it was pretty full. We were seated near the back, and my first impression was that it felt like a coffee shop and not a restaurant. There was a lady lounging on a low couch reading a manuscript and snacking on a antipasto board nearby, adding to the coffee shop vibe. The school gym-style blue rubber flooring didn't help, and the whole place was awfully bright. We started with the fried calamari, and I ordered the pasta with wild hare and he had the spicy Vesuvius pizza. I was a little bummed out since I don't like spicy foods; I have a feeling it was part defense tactic on his part since he was quite hungry and probably wanted to eat his dinner in peace without me giving him puppy dog eyes for a donated slice. Our waiter was very nice (as everyone was); I think they were all Italian (there was lots of Italian shouting coming from the kitchen). Our calamari arrived, and we dug in. The rings were quite a bit larger than what I expected, and I think the portion size was fair for almost 7 pounds. However, personally it was too much fried food for me (of course I polished off all of my half) and though delicious it left me feeling a bit "ugh". Entirely my own folly, though. The squid was fresh and tender and the batter light and crispy...lovely. The sauce came on the side in a little bowl and was much like tartar sauce...it didn't wow me. I enjoyed the dish more with a generous squeeze of the lemon that came with it and a bit of salt (they don't have salt and pepper at the tables, which I found a little strange, however upon asking we were given a huge salt mill). Our mains arrived and looked gorgeous...especially the pizza! My pasta was a bit bland; the noodles were fresh and perfectly done with a nice texture, but the sauce was lacking. A bit of Giant Salt Mill salt helped it out a bit, but I ended up having them box most of it up and taking it home. Unfortunately for my husband, that left his pizza. Like I said, I don't do spicy, and this was quite spicy. However, it was also delicious. I made sure to have lots of water on hand (they gave us a big carafe which was nice and reminded me of when I lived in Paris), and in the end, the pizza was such a generous size that he didn't mind sharing. You could tell these guys really know their pizza. The crust was light and crispy with the perfect amount of chewiness, the sauce was so tasty and basically simply fresh tomato crushed with a bit of olive oil, maybe some garlic and salt, and the cheese....yum! Creamy blobs dotted here and there of melt in your mouth oozy fresh mozzarella balls alongside the thinly sliced, salty, spicy salami; in spite of the fact my taste buds were burning off and my eyes were watering from the liberal sprinkling of chili oil and seeds, it was absolutely delicious. We didn't order dessert, but they looked quite nice, and I'm sure they do a good coffee too. Though I only tried one of the pasta dishes, pizza seems to be where Trattoria really shines. No more Domino's for us, that's for sure! Our bill came to 30 pounds including gratuity for a gin and tonic, calamari starter, a delicious spicy Vesuvius pizza and a wild hare pasta. Not bad at all. In short, it's not a place for a romantic dinner (try the very good Fifty Six just down the Green for that); the ambiance could be a lot better (even just dimming the lights would do wonders), but the staff are friendly an attentive, the prices reasonable, and the pizzas are out of this world. Went here last weekend with my 1year old and husband. It is not the first time I have been here but the first time in the last year. The whole experience was very depressing. Service was dire, we had to get menu's , baby seat ourselves and asked several times for a baby spoon which never came. We waited approx mins for a fairly basic breakfast. No one told us that it was cash only as the machine was down. The breakfast was overpriced and tasteless. Egg shell was in the dry scrambled eggs. the pancetta offering was mean. The kids gnocchi was sweet and overcooked and came after our meals and scalding hot not great when you have a hungry child. I had heard that the food and service had gone down hill from old regulars and now I have experienced it myself. read more

Stopped by Trattoria Sapori on a visit from the U.S. and was greeted by friendly staff. I witnessed right after they finished greeting me and my friend (we are both white) that the staff were not nearly as welcoming or friendly to two other separate patrons (both of whom were black). They even refused to serve a young black man and told him to leave for no reason. I've never witnessed such blatant racism at a restaurant which compelled me to make a yelp account just to report this. This racist behavior from the staff is absolutely despicable. Please work with your staff on how to treat all who walk through your doors with dignity and respect, not just white patrons. read more

Ate here on Friday lunchtime. The pizzas are a good size, but quite bland, very doughy and really expensive compared to pizza elsewhere. Mine was £12.50 and wasn't as good as anything even Pizza Express could give me for less than that. The juice drinks are good and the café has a good atmosphere. I have been to trattoria Sapori few times for pizza. Like every Italian person I am also very picky on pizza and do not accept certain blasphemies, like for example chicken on pizza. The pizza dough here is actually pretty good, it is a real shame that this place does not have a wood fired oven. The toppings are good quality, but not everyone's taste as they are often presented raw or very lightly cooked on the pizza. All in all, the end result is acceptable but prices are above average. read more

The unfortunate thing about Trattoria Sapori is that the food is actually alright - the service however is appalling and on this alone I will not be returning. Previous visits have seen very scattered and aloof staff, however yesterday was really the final nail in the coffin. The waitress had a hard time understanding what we wanted (lasagne is fairly easily transferrable) and the second waiter was even worse - he bumbled about, gave our drinks to another table then spilled an entire meal all over my friends' back - an accident of course - however when settling up the bill we thought that surely her £6 bruschetta would be on the house. The manager barked 'let me see' to my friend and basically treated her like a criminal for asking for them do something in return for having food down her back for the rest of the day. She kept saying 'well what do you want me to do about it?' and finally conceded with saying that she would pay for drycleaning if the shirt needed it, up to the cost of £2.50! Sorry, but judging by my last visit this place has gone down hill. We were there on Sunday and it was very busy. Nevertheless we got a nice table inside. To cut a long story short. We received two OK pizzas and our third order was totally forgotten. There were so many staff in there that it actually impeded communication and all attempts to remind them were unsuccessful. I therefore had to sit there for the entire meal watching the rest of my party eat. Eventually I did manage to get hold of a member of staff who actually seemed to care, and she wiped the bill clean so we did not pay anything. Interestingly she also hinted that the place was not the place it once was. I must admit that you can see signs of this. Badly water damaged lino renders part of the interior very scruffy indeed and the men's toilet is not the standard you would expect - validated by the fact that the last signature on the displayed cleaning log was some days before. I used to absolutely love this place due to the nice interior and the great quality food and coffee, so It pains me that such an asset to the neighbourhood could be showing such worrying signs. We had a highly mediocre meal here. Nothing was horrible, but there were many elements that weren't great. My general critique is that while it really bills itself as a thoroughly authentic italian place (e.g. pizza dough that has been twice risen... fior di latte mozzarella flown in from Compagna), there were many errors that really detracted from what we thought we would be getting. Here's what wasn't great: 1. My wife's salad had some bad bits in it. You know those young greens that get smelly, brown, and limp because they sat next to the plastic in the bag for too long? 2. The antipasto plate wasn't good. The bread was either soft or stale, and not what I would expect of good rustic italian bread. The aubergine and zucchini were slow baked and had no sign of being roasted or grilled. In fact the eggplant was still a bit tough and had that ugly greyish tint that's so unappealing. And then there was just the balance of the dish. There were about 20 olives and only half an artichoke heart. 3. The pizza dough was totally soggy and limp in the middle of the pie. On the outside, the crust was spongy and tough and uncuttable with the knife provided. Lastly, the olives used were those flavorless ones that come pitted come pitted from a can. Both the olives and the bread were better around the corner at a nearby gastropub! The ambience is really nice, and the waiters are kind. The owner/manager in particular seemed very sweet. The coffee is quite good. But for Italian food that they proudly boast as authentic, I would say that this isn't above average. read more

Been there twice now. Loved the pizza on my first visit so went there again for a second time. The service was very friendly. I asked if the pasta I ordered had any cream in it and was told it didn't. When it arrived, it was full of cream (can't have dairy). I swapped the dish with my friend's pizza which was excellent. We were offered a free round of drinks on the house which was nice. The waiter kept apologising for the mistake. I would go there again and happy to recommend it to anyone who wants decent Italian food around Newington Green / Stoke Newington. read more

This is our local Italian restaurant, and we have eaten there about a dozen times. The food has been great every time, without fail, although we have only sampled the Anti-pasti and the Pizza (not the pasta). The pizza base is not too floury or salty like some others I have tried. Good mix of simple, fresh toppings and a reasonable price. The service has been terrible in the past, as I have the feeling they were very understaffed, but it seems to be getting better (a new italian girl started recently and she is very helpful and friendly) Overall i's a lovely little restaurant that I am glad to have on the doorstep. read more

However, for £7.50 I expect my poached eggs to be poached - what I got was two of those funny little moulded eggs that have been steamed in a 'poaching pan'. Had a metre and a half of pizza to share with olives, salad, fruit tart for pudding, and a glass of prosecco and coffee - wonderful! Relaxed ambience despite fairly minimalist decor. Service was friendly and excellent, and we were not rushed at all. The food was excellent This has to be the best pizza I have tasted outside Italy, and matches the best I have ever had which was in Florence. I've found that place by internet I wasn't really sure what to expect especially as comments were different... well I was wooowed by food!!!! I have to say that was the best meal I've ever had in restaurant absolutely amazing!!!! the whole experience was a bit ruined at the beginning by waitresses, completely demotivated, unhappy seems like they not enjoying they work at all and you can feel that but at the end I've had an waiter who was amazing!!! smiling, chatting, helpful. This place is very cute and the food is excellent, proper Italian. The pizza is great, excellent coffee and to die for desserts. I would give it top marks if not for the shockingly bad service. Lovely looking and very nice service, but I have never seen so many people having such a hard time waiting so few tables. It's hard to get mad about as it is such comedy. Forget about it if you sit outside, plan to see a waiter about once an hour. (even though there are about 6 of them running around a couple of tables, bumping into each other). I do recommend this place, but you have to be in a VERY patient mood and plan to get up and walk up the the counter to ask for your drinks you ordered twice 30 minutes ago, then do the same for then cutlery, then a napkin, then a cup of water, then pepper, then to have the table cleared, then to get desserts, then for coffee, then for the bill and then expect to spend about 15 minutes at the till to pay.
