The 12" margerita pizza I had cost a scarcely believable £4.50, tiramisu double the usual portion size a similarly low £3.50 and soft drinks just £1.50. Further, as they don't sell alcoholic drinks they allow you to bring your own, for an incredible corkage fee of just £1. My bill for pizza, fruit juice, tiramisu and service came to a fraction over £11. But how did it all taste? Pretty good: the tomato sauce on the margerita was exceptional, comprised simply of sweet, juicy tomatoes and fresh basil leaves. The base was soft rather than crispy, but good enough. The only weakness was the quantity (rather than quality, which was reasonable) of the mozzarella, which was slightly excessive for me - next time I'll ask them to reduce it slightly. The tiramisu was among the best I've tasted in London, with a good balance between cream, sponge, coffee and dusting. And, as I've mentioned, in a huge portion. Overall, an amazing find. I struggle to think of a better Italian pizzeria in south-east London for the prices charged.

Thank god I showed up on time. The place is bustling with a genial staff and happy customers. The menu is seasonal and changes constantly so nothing I describe here will probably be on the menu when you go. We shared the mortadella appetizer with crescentines (a type of Italian biscuit) and pickled vegetables. Alas, the lemon sole was sold out so our mains choices were leg of lamb with grilled lettuce and vegetables or a hanger steak beans and bagna cauda. Who cared about the sole? All in all a wonderful neighborhood restaurant and well worth the trip even if you don't live down the street in Peckham.

I visited a couple of weeks back for its Sunday set menu and left wholeheartedly impressed. Choice is so stripped back in its set menu that it felt like a vanilla foray into submission. For a mere £20, I was treated to veal tonnato, a main course of cotechino with mustard-laced lentils and salad leaves, and an olive oil cake with creme fraise. Each dish was punchy and impressive. The first two courses did justice to Italian classics: the veal was rich and yet still delicate, the cotechino a happy meeting of earthiness, bite and soothing fat. The real star was the olive oil cake - an unassuming little slab, it was perfectly moist and admirably simply flavoured. All four of us ate well, and enjoyed the atmosphere enough to linger on a while after our meal. I hope to return soon.

My two glamorous female companions (mother & daughter) eat here often and as I now live in the US the appeal of a real Sardinian eatery was high, and the place came up trumps. My sardines were first rate and pizza crisp and very freshly cooked. As other reviewers have mentioned the amazing selection of homemade ice cream and sorbets are most unusual and very tasty. The house wine is reasonable, the owner cheeky and charming....and my two female companions radiant...so I was a happy bunny...especially as I had my hired Fiat 500 Arbarth sitting outside to zoom home inn. And there's been an improvement - still nudging the pricey side of a local restaurant and some dishes looking a little on the small size, but there's a definite change for the more authentic Sardegna-originated dishes all be they hampered as ever by London sourced ingredients. 'Sheep' prosciutto crudo was robust and interesting, 'buratta' looked hearty and just about rustic enough for my tastes (I always wish restaurants would pay more for their ingredients and less for the time it takes to twat around beautifying what's on the plate). SEPPIE with puréed beans stater were pretty good but a little on the liquid side as a whole; Maiale Ubriaco was a good size portion (drunken pig, chef must have had a few while thinking up the bizarre dish names) and was supposed to come with truffle potatoes but seemed to have settled in a bed of garlic, smokey mash with broccoli that didn't taste at all like truffles. Learnt from past mistakes and ordered 2 side orders and didn't feel underfed ! Only real disaster (which I admit I didn't taste... or want to!) was the Pesto which looked decidedly anaemic and stodgy. I never have the courage to order pesto at restaurants because I know they'll get it wrong and Mine will be better , so I need to find someone to order one on my behalf next time!) Many people have mentioned the ice cream but now the novelty flavours have worn off I have to say they are a bit on the average side for Italian ice cream and really don't deserve more than 50%. So - better, still some work to do... all In all though a more expensive but pleasant enough meal!

There is a small café area at the front where I love to bag a booth, and sit with a coffee/tea and a book, to while some hours away until a friend comes to join and share a cake (the tiramisu is particularly excellent). At the back there is a much more formal restaurant area that buzzes by night and is surprisingly grand for its price. This is where Caravaggio most excels; its value - a main course averages at about £5 and the portions are huge. A starter would be enough for some. And a coffee is only £1 - amazing compared to the coffee chains. So yes, I love Caravaggios. I can't recommend it enough. It's good-looking and quality enough for any type of social setting from family meal to first date, and at the same time cheap enough for those on a budget. A wonderful addition to Camberwell Church Street for sure. Charming I think is the best word.

Don't expect the tiny pretentious portions of some restaurants, they are not stingy which is always good especially when you pay £6.95 for Pasta Carbonora. It is not an exquisite taste, it tastes more like something you would make at home and serve to your liking. Friendly staff make the evening pleasant and the soft background opera music complements an all round evening. Surprisingly, the selection of pizza is on the low side, but it is easily made up by the desserts which are indeed a treat, try the cheesecake or the tiramisu. Carvaggio's is a good excuse to stay away from the stove for an evening, and to have a coffee stop in the afternoon.

I loved the photo of Michael Corleone on the back wall. Seriously, who doesn't want to have lunch with a Corleone? I've knocked off one star for two reasons. First, we sat by the window and there was a disturbing amount of fruit flies. I think we could all agree insects shouldn't be invited into restaurants. The second knock off was because we were overcharged on the upgrades by at least a pound-fifty (maybe more, I wasn't paying too much attention). I tipped well and rounded up, so I didn't mention it...but you may not want to. Not everyone has lived in Las Vegas, so not everyone tips 25% on what the bill WOULD be without a voucher. I will say this: knowing we were on a voucher and not knowing what we would actually spend, the waiter still gave us fantastic service. That says a lot. The food.... Starters: SALMONE AFFUMICATO and MEDITERRANEAN GAMBERONI. Both really good. The smoked salmon was pretty standard, the shrimp was amazing. If you can't stomach traditional Italian with head-on shrimp, skip the Gamberoni. I like it, so it warrants 5 stars from me. Main: RIBEYE STEAK and LINGUINI SALMONE. Why do they call it linguine when it is described and served as penne? I'm not sure. I don't particularly care since it was so good. Creamy, rich, perfect. The steak was cooked to order, tender, and tasty. If you are paying full price you'll find it on the small side. We found it to be just right for lunch. I had a cappuccino after, my friend had both of our glasses of wine that came with the meal (plus another after). Overall, I rate this 4 stars and would definitely return!
