The main statue features a female allegorical sculpture, often referred to as Victory, Liberty, or the Spirit of Newfoundland. It rises above bronze figures of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, Royal Naval Reserve, Merchant Marine, and Forestry Corps. The monument is in Downtown St. John's and was an easy walk from our Hotel. It's located near the harbour where troops departed and returned from the war and it remains an important site of remembrance. Across the street you'll find a monument to the 2 iconic dog breeds named for this Province - Newfoundland and Labrador.

It's a small, uninspiring building from the outside that holds a museum with a military-communications slant and a very wee café slinging the necessities: hydration for the hikers, light lunches for those waiting for the hikers. A bottle of water and a Gatorade was $5 flat. From what I could see inside, the exhibits themselves looked pretty bare bones but I did hear the staff person mentioning a twenty minute film that loops pretty frequently. Not exactly sure what it's about but I'd say any movie is a tough sell when you could just pop up to the top of Signal Hill and soak in the view.

For just…read more$55 (adult) for two days, you get driven from Downtown to all the key tourist destinations like Signal Hill, the Geo Centre, Quidi Vidi, The Rooms, and Cape Spear Lighthouse. You can hop on and hop off at any point. They make a stop at each of these locations each hour until around 3 pm each day (check their schedule on their site or grab a pamphlet at their booth). You'll find their first pickup stop right in front of the Alt Hotel and that's where you can also buy a ticket. We stumbled across them while walking by, initially considering Ubering to our destinations, but after comparing the prices, this seemed worthwhile. For reference, an Uber ride to Cape Spear from Downtown is $40 one way, so it seems like a no-brainer to use this service for a couple or small group, especially if you're not using a rental car. The driver also acts as a tour guide while driving across town, providing a bit of history. Coincidentally, Bobby was our driver both days; each time we hopped on, it was him, and he was friendly and added to the enjoyment of our ride to the destination.

We went to Manuels River as a last-minute activity before boarding a plane back to Toronto. We…read morethought it would help tire the kids out. But as we rushed off to the airport 3 hours later, we were wishing we had more time to spend at this beautiful place, and talking about all the things we'd like to do there the next time we visit. We started our morning with a tour of the truly excellent Interpretation Centre, which is the perfect size to get a great overview without being overwhelmed. The information is presented in a very accessible way, and there are plenty of things to touch and buttons to push to keep children engaged. We were also provided with some additional information by a Manuels River facilitator, Madison, who was very knowledgeable and great with our kids. She also provided us with a map and directions to set us up for our hike. The trails are well marked and well groomed and perfect for families - we even brought our stroller along. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking. But the highlight for me was searching for trilobite fossils in the shale beds - and actually finding (a small) one! Very unique experience, and my dinosaur-obsessed kids loved every moment.

Inside the main altar is beautiful and there are statues all around. The stained glass windows are gorgeous. There are other buildings that surround the church as there have a lot of ground space. There is a pillared entrance as you come up the street that makes a great frame for a picture.

This site is the location of the easternmost point of Canada. It includes the point itself, a…read morelighthouse, and many trails that connect to the East Coast trail system. It is pretty much a required visit for any visitor to St. John's, as the historical significance of the location and its natural beauty are more than representative of the region. It is a recommendation to stick to the paths that have been designated, but there are great views nonetheless. There's no shortage of places to walk and pieces of information to enhance your understanding of the historical significance of this site. Be sure to check in advance regarding weather conditions and if the offices are open, as hours are based on the seasons. It would be best for the visitor's centre to be open and for it to be a clear day.

My friend and I visited on a rainy day when they stayed open until 9 p.m. Here's our experience. 1) Admission: Adult regular tickets cost a little over 10 Canadian dollars with parking five per vehicle. (Pay at the kiosk in the museum lobby on your way out.) It's worth the price. 2) Experience: We started at the top floor with their art gallery and exhibits about the history of Newfoundland. In the museum section is a staircase that takes you to more items. On the top floor are a few items from the Titanic. (It's here where the first distress signals were picked up, and they helped with the relief efforts.) The bottom floors have more art and exhibits about Newfoundland's history to present. 3) Space: The architecture and views are both standout features. The space has plenty of restrooms, a cost check, and gift shop.

Walking inside around 7pm on a Monday in July, I got a table for one right away. Within minutes, I was ordering a flight of four different sour ales. (They have six or so on the draft menu.) My favorite was the guava sour ale! To eat, I got the shrimp salad, which was really tasty! It comes with two skewers of shrimp, each with five pieces of grilled shrimp.
