The two bar meals areas were pretty full, so I ate outside. This is in July. I only had to wait four minutes for my order to arrive, beautifully cooked haddock in batter, proper chips and mushy peas with mint.(see the photo!) I thought that it was reasonable at £7.95 and one of half a dozen cooked lunches at that price. They also do a two course meal (for the over 60s) for £5.95. There are also a good range of lighter options for lunch. Puddings however were disappointing, they sounded great, but were £5.45. One of the things which I should have born in mind is that, because it is such a tourist hot spot, normal prices are generally suspended. As a result the main courses were cheap, but the puddings the usual!! I enjoyed my bitter and there was a good selection of real ales, and also wines. The Queen's Head also does bed and breakfast. It costs £45 per person per night at the moment, according to the village website.

We had a relaxed dinner here on a Monday evening. Their basic pub food options are pretty affordable, but anything with red meat or fish resulted in quite a significant price jump. They had a long list of specials, but I chose off the main menu - the steamed fillet of salmon stuffed with spinach, and served with a onion, tomato, basil, and prawn salsa with a side of linguine pasta. While everything certainly tasted fresh and well-cooked, there wasn't really a lot of flavor to the dish. I was admittedly a bit confused about the "salsa" as it was really like a prawn salad and I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be eaten with the salmon or as a side dish, rather an unusual condiment! A tasty dish, but lacking in inspiration. We had a few desserts as well, I remember in particular enjoying the raspberry cheesecake, but the overall impression was still that there wasn't a lot of creativity in the kitchen, especially for the cost. Still, they have a lovely atmosphere, and it's very pleasant to spend an evening there. I just think what comes out of the kitchen is fairly average, which is fine as it's just a pub, but those who are looking for a really special meal may not find it here - although the truly wonderful staff makes it worth a visit anyway.

We ate in the bar/restaurant both nights for dinner and in the dining room for breakfast and hung out a little in the bar. Three things: 1) Thanks for understanding food allergies and having gluten-free bread - amazing! 2) Please thank the gentleman on the second bar stool from the right for recommending a trip to the distillery on Bassenthwaite, he got that right (even though he'd never been there himself!) 3) Thank you (publicity shy) Gill,for being so great and even providing us with a candlelit breakfast when lightning took out the power on the day we left. The courses included two appetizers of duck liver and a rabbit roll; small shrimp in cauliflower puree; bread and butter; local mushrooms with spelt and egg dusted with black truffle; poached trout with pickled artichoke and a trout roe sauce; loin of local deer with sausage and micro greens and an incredible side dish of venison shank encased in celeriac puree; and carmelized rum tart with blackberries. I was here when it first opened 5 years ago and chef Ryan Blackburn has gone from strength to strength since his time as head chef at "The Cottage in the Wood @ Whinlatter". Your bill here will be relative to the food you have been served. Quality will always have a price but I have yet to think that the price is OTT. People travel all the way from London just to eat the "Herdwick Hogget" speciality. Fed, watered and suitably satiated by a bottle of Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, I made my way back along the winding lamplit streets and through the door of the cottage before crashing facedown on to my featherdown four poster. They fit us in on a busy night with just an hour notice. The candlelight on the tables was very romantic for a night out with my husband. The prawn and chorizo starter was absolutely delicious. The lamb shank with fresh vegetables and mashed potatoes was excellent. I will definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience in The Lakes.
