My…read morehusband and I had a very rare night away together and the photo of the deluxe king room at the Quorn Country Hotel looked lovely on booking.com so I booked the room for the 22nd February and chose to pay upon arrival. Once I had paid we were directed to our room and were bitterly disappointed to see that the room was grossly misrepresented on the website. There were no curtains, no seating area, no hot drink making facilities, the window sills were filthy, flaked paint from the ceiling on the carpet, the pillows were so overused they were flat, the shower curtain was stained brown around the bottom and the shower hooks were rusty. The toilet was virtually impossible to flush. The list goes on. Not only was the room nowhere near worth £100, it shouldn't even be available for a paying guest. We took our cases down to reception and very calmly and politely informed the staff that we couldn't stay in a room of that standard. The gentleman on reception apologised several times and informed us that he would start the refund process and it could take up to 7 days. So 3 months later after chasing the hotel, booking.com and Talash Hotels (who apparantly own the Quorn Country Hotel) we still have no refund. Talash Hotels totally ignore any communication from us AND the hotel and booking.com don't want to know. So now we are starting legal proceedings to obtain the refund that we were told on several occasions by the hotel (by emails and verbally) that we would be receiving. All they had to do was the right thing and just give us our money back. I can only give the worst review of this hotel and the dishonest people who own it and warn potential customers to go further down the road and book into the Quorn Grange Hotel instead, which is what we had to do. Funnily enough the staff there seemed to already know how below standard the Quorn Country Hotel is.

The grounds around the hotel are superb with very posh gardens and a lake at the bottom of them. They hold many functions such as wedding receptions for which I have been to 2. The quality of these functions are superb and highly recommended to all. The drinks are expensive as you would expect but it has a big car park out the back and the rooms are very posh inside.

Failing that, there is a multistorey car park next to the hotel for which there is a discounted fee of £15 for hotel residents. It is a shame that the pool has been closed for a number of years, but I understand the reason as it primarily due to the running costs. All the staff I met were great. Slight problem was that my credit card hadn't been requested to add extgras, this was rectified later. I paid for a stocked minibar, it appeared to be chargeable to the room any items removed. It ws only just before checkout that I found that this wasn't the case. The signage in the fridge was confusing. Nevertheless a good size room and a comfortable bed. Although, my wife complained about the hard pillows.....I didn't find them to be a problem. I'm sure the hotel would have rectified them for my wife, if she had asked. I was recognised as a Diamond Elite member and breakfast was therefore included free of charge. The breakfast offerings were great, unfortunately, I didn't see the porridge in time and had cereal. Not the end of the world. Would I stay there again? Yes.

We've had two stays at the Derby Lodge and received the best service of any chain style hotel that I've ever stayed at. Staff were always ready to help(including when my OH sprained his ankle and they supplied ice in a complimentary tea towel as an emergency measure), arriving late for breakfast on bank holiday Monday(having thought it was the same time as the weekend) the staff made sure we had plenty of choice still and didn't rush us in any way. Breakfast, though continental, is great including good bread and pastries plus organic yoghurts, surprising at the low costs they charge. We stayed on a deal including one night free on both visits-meaning 3 nights cost us altogether under £105.

All rooms are well appointed and the lounge bar is superb but the crowning glory is the restaurant. Jason as head chef continually comes up with new menus of superb, mouthwatering standard. Believe me, because of business I stayed here for over six months. One thing that Jason will not do is cook to a price,all ingredients are fresh so expct to pay a reasonable cost for this. Perhaps Qypers from some parts of the country will still think the prices cheap but you will be surprised by the standards. So if it's business or pleasure (they do have a Four Poster) that takes you this way then book in and rest awhile in comfort, but do book ahead as they do get full both in the restaurant and in the hotel.

There is now a pub/family restaurant built next door so you don't need to travel too far for food. It's a little outside of the city centre but it only takes 5/10 mins by bus/taxi to get there. The building is a bit dated though the staff do work hard at keeping it clean. The whole place could do with some updating and lick of paint. If I had paid the rack rate I saw on checking in, I'd have been disappointed but the Expedia price point was fair Happily, I can report on a yummy buffet breakfast. The staff worked very hard to keep everything stocked up and guests supplied with coffee and tea. There was a good choice of hot food - all components of an English breakfast were available together with a small selection of continental style cheese and ham. The cold counter had fresh fruit salad, cereals, yoghurts and pastries and I appreciated having a range of fruit juices available. Sadly, the friendly staff were once again let down by the infrastructure - the old bread toaster acted more like a bread warmer When my friends and I braved the outdoor pool (it was totally freezing in the British mid summer), the real gems of this hotel came to light - the staff, especially the female waitstaff from the restaurant, who were super friendly, chatty and made us feel at home To the management of Novotel, the staff in your hotel is top class. However, having booked a suite (as recommended by a reviewer on the Late Rooms website) I was not disappointed. We were given a fair sized twin room, alongside a huge en-suite bathroom (bath/shower, loo and twin sinks), together with an extremely spacious lounge - which had an additional 'cloakroom' completely separate from the bathroom. The suite itself was well equipped with two TVs (one in the lounge and one in the bedroom), the usual tea/coffee tray, a fridge, a safe, an ironing board and iron plus various other little extras. The suites are located in Willoughy Hall, just across the courtyard from the main hotel - so if it is raining you do potentially get a bit wet when going back and forth! But today it was quite refreshing to get a breath of air when en route to the dining room for breakfast. And breakfast was great! Plenty of choice, generous portions and tasty food. I paid £62 for the suite (via Late Rooms) so at £31 per person consider we got a real bargain!! The hotel is located very close to junction 25 of the M1, so very convenient for Derby or Nottingham. Can thoroughly recommend it!

I believe the rooms in the main section too are spectacular. However, go on a 'spa break' and you get shunted off to the 'annexe' which is frankly pretty grim - crushed pringles under the sofa anyone? I won't go into the litany of problems we encountered - they were all fairly minor but would add up to a rather damning report all in all. The spa and the annexe are very tired and a little grubby, although the beauticians and the treatments were lovely. I have heard others who stayed in the main hotel say they have had a wonderful time - the grounds too are really nice for walking around. However, be warned about the completely different standards (but same price tag) for the spa section. Ask where your room is if you have booked at the Risley!
