I took their Holistic childbirth preparation class, their breastfeeding class, and a newborn class. They gave lots of valuable information that provided alternatives to the dated "What to Expect When You're Expecting". I learned information that challenges the medical system, but also respects its benefits at the same time. I think most people do not realize the politics and money behind hospital births, attending these classes really helps you not only with your options (water birth, homebirth, hospital birth, etc) , but also helps you prepare to negotiate with hospital staff so you can have the birthing experience you want. You also get to meet other parents who are on your wavelength. The Center is very welcoming, and has a lending library consisting of videos and birhting and parenting books. They just started a Breastfeeding room where breastfeeding moms can go to find support. I also learned about cloth diapering in the class and how much easier it is than people think. I regret not taking their mothering arts group, which is for mom and baby up to 6 months old. One of the very valuable things I learned here was vocalization, an alternative to "Lamaze". Vocalization is what helped me get through my contractions. It's using deep guttoral animalistic sounds rather than "hee hee hee" breathing.

I've made several attempts to contact Gillian and no response. It saddens me that this is how I am treated and I hope this is not how moms ready to give birth are treated! Finding Josie was a true answer to our prayers. She ensured that we entered the labor process with all of our questions answered, including those we didn't think to ask! She explained all of our options to us with words we could understand, empowered us to make decisions we felt confident in and ensured that we kept an open mind to the aspects of birth that are outside of our own control. I ended up needing an induction, something I was hoping to avoid. Unfortunately, the specific circumstances of my labor required us to change our minds on many aspects of our birth plan. I was so grateful that Josie had helped to educate us on our choices so that we understood what would happen differently. Above all, I was so glad that she helped to foster that open mindset so we could embrace the choices that were in the best interest of everyone - healthy baby! My labor brought up several challenging moments that I needed to work through as a survivor, and Josie was right there with us, supporting both of us in the effort to keep my mind at ease. We were hesitant, at first, to select a doula so new to the field, but I could not be more satisfied with the care we received. We chose Josie due to her knowledge on trauma, and I am so glad that we did. We went into the labor room with a beautiful plan. Despite the fact that our babies needs changed that plan notably, we ended up with a truly validating experience.
