Buyers Beware: Rude, Defensive, and Disrespectful Customer Service at Tree Valley
I am writing this review not because Tree Valley denied a warranty claim (I understand that policies exist) but because of the condescending and defensive tone they took in responding to a respectful, good-faith inquiry. The way customers are treated matters, and the response I received was unprofessional, dismissive, and frankly, shocking for a local business that claims to value horticulture and community.
I purchased two ornamental dappled willows from Tree Valley in May 2024 for $510. Unfortunately, despite regular care, both trees failed to survive the winter. When I reached out to request support under their warranty, I was polite and reasonable. I included my receipt and clear photos, and acknowledged that I understood animal damage might not be covered. I simply asked whether any flexibility or goodwill--store credit, partial refund, even just advice--could be offered, especially considering I was never advised to install tree guards (which I've since learned are essential for this type of tree and were not mentioned by staff or on the plant tags).
What I received in return was not an explanation of policy, it was an outright dismissal and condescension. Their email included lines like, "You are being unreasonable... I have never had a comment like yours." They referred to my trees as hydrangeas (they weren't), made sarcastic remarks about my "ignorance to plant material," and signed off without even providing a name or title. At no point did they show an ounce of empathy, accountability, or basic professionalism.
And this is not just my experience, look at the other negative reviews. A consistent theme emerges: dismissive tone, lack of respect, and unwillingness to engage constructively with customers. Tree Valley doesn't just deny claims, they make you feel small for even asking. And the worst part was, from what I've read in other reviews, it appears the person responding to me (who did not name themselves) isn't some teenager who works here for the summers, it's the literal owner who has been in the business for over 40 years! WOW.
I didn't write this review because of a warranty denial. I wrote it because I was shocked at how poorly I was treated. Respectful communication is free, and this business chooses not to offer it. There are computer programs who can respond to their emails, maybe they should just try that. I will never shop here again, and I encourage others to think twice. If your plant fails, even within a year, expect little more than a cold copy-paste of policy, topped with attitude.
Tree Valley can and should do better. Save yourself time and money, just go to Canadian Tire. read more
