It's just as beautiful and scenic as seen in famous photographs and paintings. It survived the Great Fire that destroyed most of Copenhagen. A famous Danish fairytale writer lived in not 1, but 3 of these houses on the waterfront. That's right! There are wall plates designating the buildings that Hans Christian Andersen lived in along Nyhavn. So, why 4 stars? It's a huge tourist attraction! That means it's super crowded with many travelers taking canal and Inner Harbour cruise tours. It's lined with cafés and restaurants on both sides of the canal. All of which look amazing yet are pricier than the ones you see tucked away from all this hype. The outdoor tables at these restaurants are all taken along the canal. There's certainly lots of people watching going on here. We were told to be aware of pickpocket activities. To be honest, it's just like any other crowded tourist spot. Don't let that discourage you. There's a hot dog stand here that appears to be very popular. Just know that there are many throughout the city that are just as good and with better seating. With all that said, it was still an amazing sight to see. It's probably best to give yourself more time to browse through everything that this area has to offer. It's a fun & happening place to be. Go there in the early morning hours for a calmer experience. You'll get better picture opportunities of the brightly painted buildings with the reflections off the water.

They claim that this area is completely beyond the rules and the laws of Copenhagen. In some ways, that is pretty easy to see as the main street is lined with people selling weed and hash, which is still illegal in Denmark. Copenhagen is not Amsterdam. Though a bit sketchy, this city within a city is very well maintained. I am sure there is some other story going on here. ...One that we will never know. This being said, what you will find here is some of the best street art and graffiti that you will witness anywhere across Copenhagen. Of course, it is clearly stated all over the place, "No Photos." But, I'm guess that is more to keep the people dealing drugs safe and off the radar than anything else. One of the funny/interesting things I find about this location is that tour buses actually pull up to it. I don't know, maybe it's just me me, but if you are truly embracing an alternative lifestyle that all seems rather intrusive. Nonetheless, this is an interesting place. Even if all you do is look at the great street art, it is worth the visit.

Back in the 90ties I were studying Geography, and we were making a analysis of the street. It had been a vibrant street in a working class area with all kinds of shopping. The street died, and it raised again like a phoenix. All the essential shopping is back, but it's a hipster community. Fortunately a lot of the housing in the area is non-profite, so the area known as The Black Square is still black by it's emigrants and drunks. You can also spot a student or two. In the street you can buy to expensive coffee, support Islamic extremists, have icecreme, buy clothing, hang out with cheap beer, or do what you want. We're inclusive at Blågårdsgade. Just remember we live here, and you're a probably a guest.

A lot of Danes (including those "with another…read moreethnic background than Danish," as ethnic Danes would say), international hipsters, and immigrants like me hang out here. Although the street itself is dirty, the shop fronts are colourful and attractive and the graffiti is cool (NOT the tagging). Why are we all hanging out here? Because there is something for everyone. Blågårds Apoteket for the older day-drinking crowd, Harbo Bar for the hipsters, Beyti for drunks in need of a meal, and Cafe N for the vegetarians. Obviously these divisions are not cut and dried and of course there are also some places with a mostly mixed demographic like Props, Hind Marked, or the library. Although this street has had a troubled past, it is a nice blend now and when I'm here I feel at home. It's especially great when there is a block party or fleamarket going on. Definitely check it out if you are visiting Copenhagen, just stay out of the way of cyclists. They are all painted a different color and are very well maintained with flowers/bushes out infront of many of the properties. If you happen to be in the area of this street, I highly recommend stopping by and having a look at Olufsvej. Because while others are completely infatuated with it, I'm a bit more, "meh, it's OK". The old town houses, all of them painted in a variety of colors, are picturesque, definitely, and the street is nice and quiet, in spite of being in a very busy part of the city. So in that sense, yes, there's a local gem-vibe going. However, when I've walked down it (and living near-by with small child means you take plenty of walks down every street in your 'hood), I've often had this sort "OK, that's that, then" feeling when I've walked the length of the street. A sort of underwhelmed feeling, really. Couple that with a couple of times when the local residents have been, let's say, unwelcoming, and the place has just lost some of its charm for me. Yes, it is a cozy little street, and it is pretty picturesque (the modern buildings at either end is a bit of a drawback, though), but I just find it wanting.

Initially, we didn't know if we should walk to the left or right side of it since there are viewing platforms on both sides. It all starts to make sense once you begin walking across it. The bike lane is on the north side of the bridge. You can cross over it to get to the north viewing platforms. Just be very careful of the bicylists zipping by. They have the right of way in those lanes. There is a middle part of the bridge where the pedestrian and bike lanes are side by side. This is the part of the bridge that slides back and forth to allow taller boats to pass through the harbor. I didn't get to see it in action while we were there. It appears to have been designed at a height to allow the waterbuses and tour boats to go under without having to use that mechanism. It was originally criticized for the sharp turn that bicyclists have to make when passing the middle spans. Nowadays, it's credited for the huge reduction in commuting times with more and more bicylists using it. This bridge was very much needed in this location. I can say, without a doubt, that it is a very convenient route to use as a pedestrian coming from Christianshavn. It's way less congested than crossing bridges with roadways like the Knipplesbro when getting to the city center of Copenhagen. So, why is it named the "Kissing" Bridge (Kyssebroen)? It has to do with the way the 2 sliding spans of the bridge meet together in the middle. They meet up very gently like a soft kiss. How sweet is that? It's really just a great route to take with beautiful views of the Inner Harbour. We enjoyed our walks across this bridge when staying in Christianshavn. It's a great location!

So it will stand as an eyesore for a couple more years? I told the guys from Noma to go party so hard on it after regaining their #1 rating in the world from the World's 50 Best that it would collapse and they'd just have to rebuild from scratch. Hope that happens!
