We also decided to do an evaluation at my child's school which was easily scheduled. My child's teachers noted how great Erica was- they were also impressed. It has probably been about half a year now, and we have seen so much progress in his language development. Our son looks forward to his speech sessions and has fun while learning. I love receiving the detailed summary after each session, as well as helpful / relevant assignments that we can print out and work with at home. Erica is engaging, patient, friendly and professional. The activities continue to evolve as our son's language develops, and it's clear that the plan is individualized and personalized to his specific needs. As you know, there is no "one-size-fits-all" plan for these kind of things. We could not be any happier with Lakeview Speech and Language Clinic. Merlin provides comprehensive therapeutic services, including ABA, ST, PT, OT, and Social Work, in addition to educational services. The staff are insightful, creative, patient, compassionate and fun, and my son absolutely loves his time at school. The learning mixed with therapeutic play is just right for him developmentally, and his therapists take a holistic approach to building social and academic, and other skills he'll need to function throughout life. As someone who taught for nearly a decade and has worked in school settings since, I can fully appreciate the level of individual attention he gets from his therapists and therapeutic assistants, the extensive communication with families to stay up to date on our goals for our child and to let us know how his day is going (including notes and photos throughout the day!). And mostly I appreciate that he is not just sitting around at a desk all day doing differentiated work--I he is active and thinking, engaged, and having fun as he builds new skills. I see the review from two and a half months ago, and I think the context there is important: hers was the very first child to transition from private insurance to ISBE funding, so it makes sense that she personally would have experienced the growing pains as they adjust to a different system. I can imagine that this is a steep learning curve, and I'd extend some grace to them as they figure it out. In our second year at the Avondale location, I'd say they have worked out a lot of kinks, and that this is a joyful place for my child to learn throughout the day. We have found it to be a godsend.

Most kids respond to the traditional parenting methods -- discipline, motivators, natural…read moreconsequences, blah blah blah. But some don't. So you visit therapists, psychiatrists, parenting coaches, blah blah blah. Nothing helps. You feel like shit for being such a failure as a parent, and life becomes pretty miserable. Anyone else been there? We went through the wringer with our older child (now 18 and beyond much help) but when we saw our younger child starting to go the same way (lying, stealing, disrespect, etc.) we were ready to try something different. Thank goodness we found Jim Kling. He is really different. For one thing, he comes to your house. He talks to the parents, not the child. He works from the outside in (the kid's environment) not the inside out (how the child feels). He walks you slowly, patiently, through his program that is so simple yet so foreign to us that the two of us (each with a master's degree) had to really work to bend our minds around it. Jim is entirely available by phone or email between sessions to walk you through specific situations or just clarify the rules. It's not cheap, but it works. It's worth every penny. We tried…read moreeverything- parent coaching and counseling, medication and various therapies for our ADHD child, every book on oppositional and ADHD kids ever printed- nothing improved our home life very much or for very long. A counselor recommended Alternative Teaching to us, and it changed our lives for the better, and "better" is an understatement. The system taught us as parents how to take back control over what we will and will not tolerate without getting emotional or resentful. And it empowers our kids with a sense of choice over how to behave and what the consequences of those choices are. Ric has been 100% supportive and available any time we call, following up and working with us long after we had completed the program. There are no miracles out there- we still have to work at keeping our family functional. But Alternative Teaching is the only way that we have achieved results for our efforts. I second the prior reviewer who said that it was expensive but WORTH EVERY PENNY! We are so grateful.

My daughter's teacher is Mrs. Raksha Papa-and she is GREAT too! The school psychologist is also awesome, as well as the speech pathologists and social workers. I am heartbroken that my son has to leave this school and go to John Jay next year for kindergarten (Jay is our assigned school for our residence). Really like these old-fashioned, single-gender schools where the kids can focus more on academics…read moreand athletics, and not have to worry about how they look and dress for the opposite sex...there is enough time for that elsewhere. This school has been around for over 100 years, so you know they have proven themselves...you don't last that long unless you bring results. Academically: the school has loads of AP course offerings, all the STEM subjects one could wish for, and a reputation for getting kids prepared for college...this includes having their own library, auditorium, and computer labs. Athletically: they usually star in baseball, football, and basketball...probably in that order, although it can change from year to year. For example, they won a couple of state championships in wrestling a few years ago, so if you have a son who excels in a particular sport, don't be afraid to bring him here to learn more...he will. In extra-curriculars: they have scores of clubs and activities...some competitive such as chess and scholastic bowl, and some not competitive such as theater...and they also have a renowned band program. Facilities wise: they have a standout football field and practice field (they usually arrange to have the neighboring grammar schools play on their field). They also have their own baseball field, basketball gym, weight room, and swim pool for the swim teams on site. They don't take a second seat in the facilities category. All in all this is a institution on the south side of Chicago. They remained for 85 years at one location (on 63rd Street just east of Western Avenue) and for the last 28 years have been on a 30-some acre campus at 77th & Western Avenue. This place is for real...go visit and decide for yourself...give it a chance, we did.
