I have a love-hate relationship with Ashfield.
When I first moved to Sydney, I lived in Croydon and worked in Ashfield. At the time, I hated my "inner-west" location (who was I kidding, Croydon is only the "inner" west of Sydney if you include Perth as an outer west suburb of Sydney) - there were no cafes, no markets, no charm, no two storey terrace houses with wooden window shutters. This was not the Sydney I'd moved for! But now, having moved to the (actual) inner west, trips back to Ashfield bring surprising delight and I curse my past self for not appreciating it more!
The fruit and veg store is a perfect example of this. Even my favourite local fruit and veg stores can't compete with the range and prices of Ashfield's Tri Fresh Fruit and Veg. The products here are so cheap! So varied! So fresh! And the staff are super friendly. The shop is huge and includes a mini butchers/deli at the front near the counters. Whilst this is no doubt a handy feature for anyone cooking traditional Chinese meals, I have to hold my breath and look the other way whenever I happen to line up at the checkout beside the counter of chicken necks, chicken hearts and lamb brains.
People of Ashfield, when it comes to green grocers, you've got it good. Be grateful. read more
