I attended the mens' final around 1967 when Gene Scott beat Chuck McKinley. This was still the era of Amateur Tennis a couple of years before the sport went from sham amateur to pro in the summer of 1969. The transition from amateur to pro was sudden and universal. The Meadow Club was a spectacular retreat for the WASP rich. It offered grass courts exclusively. There were more grass courts in America then than there are today, but they were still a rarity. This club, as I recall, rotated42 courts for play once a week. So, in total there were only 6 courts available for play one day a week. Picture them at their manicured best with many fronting the Atlantic Ocean. This was grass court heaven. Each one was manicured perfection rivaling an excellent putting green. In order to keep them in top shape play had to be limited to just a few hours a week. So 4-5 hours play in a single day was followed by 6 days of attentive recovery for each one. Even back in the '60s this club was extremely exclusive and cost a fortune to become a member. Not sure if they still have all those courts, but I'm sure the club is still private as private can be for a country club. No golf, if I recall correctly. Racist and anti-Semitic from the start, I'd be very surprised if it still hasn't remained "restrictive", as golf and tennis clubs were once referred to politely.

If you see the big, red dog, you've reached The Southampton Dog Park which is generously situated…read moreon an acre of land with three different sections for small, medium and large dogs. Since there is more dirt than grass, be prepared for dirty and potentially wet feet. On the quiet day we visited, a sitter for six dogs sat on one of the benches, paying more attention to the phone than the various sized dogs. An owner kept his dog on the leash while in the park, usually not a recommended habit. Grateful the town offers a dog park, but not too sure about the care and rules of the park.

Overall a great addition to the village. My family's dog loves to play with his friends in the…read moresmall or gentle dog sections. However, there have been some incidents in the rowdy section to the point where the dog park is becoming infamous among locals. Yesterday my boyfriend and I were walking our dog from my parents house to the dog park, and stopped by a local business. The business owner came out and warned us against going to the dog park, saying he wouldn't bring his own dog there and that "if you see a pit bull, run". I've also heard from others about a different problematic large dog (and it's owner), where the dog is very aggressive and violent towards other dogs and humans. If you are concerned, perhaps stay in the gentle dog section and don't go into the rowdy section!
