Borland Rest Stop - There's a water pump in the middle of the picnic area

It is pretty bare bones, but actually has basic amenities - picnic tables with shade coverings, pet areas and toilets. Yes they are "pit" toilets and there is no running water. You are in the middle of the stinking playa - there IS no water here. The individual facilities were clean, not smelly and are obviously maintained on a regular basis. All of the amenities and access to the picnic area are handicapped accessible. The area around the picnic tables was trash free and the grounds appear to be regularly maintained. The state historical marker of the "Forty Mile Desert" tells of the sacrifices the emigrants made to cover this expanse of alkali wasteland on their arduous trek to California. People lost their lives. The inconvenience of no running water is so minor in comparison.

What. A. Shithole…read more Literally...holes full of shit. I'm sorry...do I offend? Trust me, nothing is as offensive as this rest stop. But if you'd like some prettier language, let's just call it a putrid repository of feces. I've been in some gnarly pit toilets in my time, but this one ranks pretty high on the omigod-what-am-I-doing-in-this-noxious-hellhole scale. The toilets are poorly constructed and poorly maintained, and without getting into too much gory detail, let's just say that the waste material does not all manage to drop into the receptacles that are meant to keep things reasonably sanitary. And, of course, no TP. And broken door locks. And overflowing trash bins. There is no water, so pray you have wet wipes. And if the toilets themselves aren't enough, the wide swathe of gravel that borders the rest stop and serves as the "Dog Walking Area" (read: carpet of dog turds) really adds to the effluvium. The really sad thing is that there is actually a lot of interesting and important history at this stop, including two historic markers touting the importance of this area to native people and to early pioneers--this was a major stopping point along the California Trail. The interpretive signs here are quite good. There is also a memorial to a fallen state trooper. But the memory of the Numa people, the pioneers, and Officer Borland should be better honored than to be clouded in poo exhaust. One really good thing that I noticed is that there was no litter anywhere, as far as I could tell. The picnic area and the parking area were squeaky clean. I even saw a couple utilizing one of the shaded tables because, apparently, they had no sense of smell. On Google Maps this is labeled Fallon Rest Area, and on the Nevada DOT website it is listed as Trinity Rest Area, but I propose a more accurate moniker--NOPE Rest Area. Don't. Don't. Just don't. You would be better stopping your car in the desert and squatting on a sagebrush. If you really need a toilet, Lovelock is another half hour up the road. Hold it.

Definitely wanted to take the time to leave this good and honest review. Husband and I were looking…read morefor a half way spot on our way home from vacation. We've never been to Lovelock, but it was on the map and the room was cheap. So I booked it. Then my husband looked at yelp and was sketched out big time on if we should go through with our reservation. It was too late to book elsewhere and my card was already going to be charged. We pulled in, nice building. Good paint job, doesn't look shabby. Attached to a casino, smelled like cigarettes inside but we don't care about that. Girl up front was really nice. Ok, so far so good. We head to our room inside.... SUPER CLEAN. AC was already on and our room was like an ice box, perfect because it was 110 outside. Nice furniture, fridge, microwave, bedding smells like clean bleach, no cigarette smells. HUGE bathroom!!! Separate shower and bath. As a woman, this was awesome. I got to do all my getting ready in here! Mini coffee pot and the coffee was actually really good!!! Hotel was quiet, normal people and normal cars all trying to get a good rest. There was the most absolute WORST experience ever trying to find something to eat in Lovelock. One restaurant was closed, the pizza place is the gas station and we were forced into their 2 star McDonald's where the ice was out and soda carbonation was out lol. And all we kept telling each other is thank god our hotel is nice!! We were very thankful. This hotel deserves the great review. We didn't find anything dirty, obviously no bugs. We slept great before our 4.5 hour drive home. Great stay and experience! Definitely recommend!
