They've always had at least 8 theaters, and for some years had an extra 4 (4, I think) at the SM Annex, before it renovated and decided to remove them. Today, SM North's 11 cinemas (10 2D cinemas, one IMAX) boast renovated seating, and they aren't too cold, like they used to be, though bringing a sweater or a shawl is always good. I've watched at their IMAX theater, but I've decided I do not like wearing those glasses anymore. What's really good about SM Cinemas is how easy they make it for you to purchase a ticket: (1) Use a pre-loaded ePlus card, and buy on site; if you do, you join the priority queue into the theater, together with senior citizens and PWDs; (2) Go to smcinemas.com, book and pay for your ticket online, and you will be emailed a copy of your receipt and a QR code, that will be scanned at the door; (3) Debit SM Advantage or BDO rewards points (1 pt is to 1 peso) to purchase your tickets at the ticket booth without shelling out any more money. I've tried methods 2 and 3 successfully and very conveniently. While I have an ePlus card, I have to yet to try that - and will let you when I do. As for food - there's the usual popcorn and chips selection next to the theaters, while restaurants inside SM North close at 10pm, which is a bummer for last show viewers. The next best bet is the outdoor balcony trail of restaurants at SM's Sky Garden; most are open till 11, so you have time to tuck in at least a coffee, or from a selection of bar chow places, burgers, and ramen. Parking is best in SM Carpark, the building in the rear; you can get in way past 10, they won't give you a hard time. To shorten your walk and hit the correct bridgeway, drive all the way to the end if your theater of choice is at The Block, the middle, if going to theaters 5-8; and parking close to the ramp gets you nearest to theaters 9-11.

There's a Bowling and Billiards center, Swimming Pool, Tennis Courts and many others. But the best among all is the Cine Adarna! Yes, an actual 800-seater cinema inside a campus. What I personally like about Cine Adarna is the quality films and movies that they screen. It's a good thing that there's a movie theater in the city that showcases local independent films, short films, international art films and cultural documentaries. Most screenings here are also accompanied by talks and forums featuring the film's director and producers. Clearly, this movie house is not just for entertainment but is a haven for educational screenings as well, it is after all built as a part of the College of Mass Communications in UP. Tickets here usually costs for only about P50.00-P150.00. For some movie schedules, the screening is free! So if you're more into content-driven films, go check UP Cine Adarna screening schedules at http://filminstitute.upd.edu.ph/

It's a super-ultra-mega special place for me, since this is where I've first exhibited my short movie "Braxília" in a film festival here in Manila. Their equipments are great and modern and they can screen both in HD or 35mm with a high-quality movie projector. I suggest taking a look on their events calendar because there's always an interesting festival going on there. My film, for example, was part of the 6th Brazilian Film Festival, promoted by the Embassy of Brazil together with the UP. I've been there during the whole festival and I could feel how UP students like that place. It's not only a place to watch films, but also to discuss about filmmaking and arts in general. I would define it as a "cult" place, definitely. If you're a movie buff, then you have to visit Adarna! It's an unique opportunity to get closer to Filipino productions - films that unfortunately we rarely see in the malls, once the blockbusters monopolize almost all theaters.

When paying for your tickets you have to choose your seats as they are numbered. Also, prices differ of how long the movie has played in the theater. We were told to pick from a bowl for a prize. We received a free small popcorn. They have a snack bar with some choices. The free popcorn we received was wrapped in saran wrap but it was stale and no butter taste at all. Blah. Going into the theater, it was more like an orchestra set up, eye level and seat sections in three sections. The seats were pretty comfy but ok quality. We sat in the far right upper side and it was still not bad. Good thing the people here are shorter than in the US!! Haha No one seemed to really laugh out loud like us Americans when there were jokes or something funny said or done (watched Spider-Man: Homecoming!)! Hahaha...so embarrassing! Prices are decent and I would watch here again. [71/100]

Shang Cineplex has all the mentioned factors which makes it my favorite place for a movie date (with myself or my friends). Their snack bar does not just involve popcorn and hotdogs but you can also grab a bite from the concessionaires. You can't bring in food from elsewhere though. You don't have to be in the special cinemas just to experience comfortable seating with ample leg room that you don't have to raise your legs each time someone passes by. AC can be quite chilly so I never go here without proper outerwear. But what makes my movie experience even more enjoyable is that I can just bask in its goodness (or lack thereof) without the crowd spoiling or giving annoying remarks and reactions. So if you're in the mood for a peaceful and satisfying place to enjoy a movie, this is definitely it.

There are some good…read moreones in Podium, in Greenhills and in Greenbelt but if you're in an SM Mall, you can expect crowds and older seats. That is until you discover Director's Club Cinema. This is more my style than the big cinemas. It feels like you're watching in a private theater with an audience limited to 25 or so people. I love that they use real La-Z Boy seats and not the fake recliners that are not at par with the real thing. The hefty price comes with unlimited popcorn and drinks. Although it's not as romantic as watching in a regular cinema with your loved one where you could be hip to hip (literally), I do love the space. The legroom is awesome - you could fit an entire row in front. I love that I could quietly watch my movie and feel like I'm just at home in a very expensive seat, getting popcorn served without having to get it myself. It really is a movie watching experience fit for a diva.

I didn't know what to expect; I just wanted to see the movie. 350 pesos gets you in. That's inclusive of popcorn and water. There's a lounge area inside where you can wait for the previous screening to end. There weren't enough seats for everyone waiting, so most people had to stand around awkwardly looking for a place to lean. Inside, it's quite cozy. It's not a colossal cinema because the lay-z boys are spaced pretty far apart, and each pair of seats are separated by a table in between. They were veeeeery comfortable seats--soft, fluffy, and could be reclined. If you're someone who has a pattern of falling asleep in movie theaters, this could be a problem because the comfy seats make it pretty easy to doze off. They take your popcorn preferences beforehand, and I ordered cheese, but honestly, I didn't care much for it. I don't even like popcorn so much, so that part of the deal was pretty much useless to me. While I did enjoy the experience, I don't think I'm going to make it a habit to pay so much more just for comfortable seats and not much else. Buying popcorn and water separately will still amount to less if I bought regular movie tickets. However, it wasn't a particularly bad experience.
