I often lose myself in dreamland here while explosive special effects and dialogue flicker in my subconscious mind. As in, the person behind me could fall asleep and snore really loudly and I wouldn't even blame them. Because I'd fall asleep here too. I've seen two movies at this theatre, Percy Jackson and Sherlock Holmes. In both of these movies, my companions were fast asleep, torn between following the events of the plot and wanting to find out how far the reclining seats could tilt back. We have nothing against Sherlock Holmes or Percy Jackson. (Okay, maybe Percy Jackson.) Ultra 7 Cinema is just too comfy to resist. A year ago, I used to complain that our cinemas were becoming too expensive. Then I tried to watch a movie in the U.S. where tickets cost $12 for general admission--and torrenting is illegal--and it came with hard upright seats and no popcorn or drinks. Ain't nobody got time for that! At Ultra 7 Cinema, I can enjoy seats that lean all the way back until I'm completely horizontal, Dolby Digital Surround-EX, and refillable drinks and popcorn. All for around P400. Not bad. Leaves me feeling more pampered than a kitten.

What I personally like about Cine Adarna is the quality films and movies that they screen. It's a good thing that there's a movie theater in the city that showcases local independent films, short films, international art films and cultural documentaries. Most screenings here are also accompanied by talks and forums featuring the film's director and producers. Clearly, this movie house is not just for entertainment but is a haven for educational screenings as well, it is after all built as a part of the College of Mass Communications in UP. Tickets here usually costs for only about P50.00-P150.00. For some movie schedules, the screening is free! It's a super-ultra-mega special place for me, since this is where I've first exhibited my short movie "Braxília" in a film festival here in Manila. Their equipments are great and modern and they can screen both in HD or 35mm with a high-quality movie projector. I suggest taking a look on their events calendar because there's always an interesting festival going on there. My film, for example, was part of the 6th Brazilian Film Festival, promoted by the Embassy of Brazil together with the UP. I've been there during the whole festival and I could feel how UP students like that place. It's not only a place to watch films, but also to discuss about filmmaking and arts in general. I would define it as a "cult" place, definitely. If you're a movie buff, then you have to visit Adarna! It's an unique opportunity to get closer to Filipino productions - films that unfortunately we rarely see in the malls, once the blockbusters monopolize almost all theaters.

Why do I like Promenade you ask... Do you remember the story of Goldilocks? like the one she always chooses is the one that's just right? Well, that's Promenade Theatres for me. It's the most comfortable, the seats are just right, so is the air conditioning and because I've been watching movies there for years now, it just feels like home. I love bringing snacks in, come on, who doesn't? and their snack bar typically has everything that I need. Their drink selection always has something new, maybe to shake things up a bit. So I always try whatever's new and I get myself a bag of chips! Oh and if you or your child needs some seat booster, the thing you put in your seat to give you a better view of the screen, they have it too. If you have a camera with you they do make you leave it with the guard but don't worry because they do really keep an eye on it OR if you're uncomfortable with this arrangement you can always leave it in your car. Another is that movies are plain great, cheap thrills... unless you're a total cheapskate and love resorting to torrenting crappy low-res versions of movies. To me, Promenade Cinema 8 is one of the best theatres that Manila has to offer, primarily because it was one of the first rooms that offer the astounding and dynamic acoustics of the Dolby Atmos system. This thing is a game-changer, I tell you. Suddenly big blockbuster flicks are even bigger and better without having the crummy and dizzying gimmick that is 3D. All for the same price as a movie in any other cinema, so why not? The only downside of Promenade Cinema 8 is sometimes, the theatre can get EXTREMELY cold. So make sure to bring a jacket.

SM North EDSA Cinemas has worked hard over the years to take care of its customers from every…read moredemographic. They've always had at least 8 theaters, and for some years had an extra 4 (4, I think) at the SM Annex, before it renovated and decided to remove them. Today, SM North's 11 cinemas (10 2D cinemas, one IMAX) boast renovated seating, and they aren't too cold, like they used to be, though bringing a sweater or a shawl is always good. I've watched at their IMAX theater, but I've decided I do not like wearing those glasses anymore. What's really good about SM Cinemas is how easy they make it for you to purchase a ticket: (1) Use a pre-loaded ePlus card, and buy on site; if you do, you join the priority queue into the theater, together with senior citizens and PWDs; (2) Go to smcinemas.com, book and pay for your ticket online, and you will be emailed a copy of your receipt and a QR code, that will be scanned at the door; (3) Debit SM Advantage or BDO rewards points (1 pt is to 1 peso) to purchase your tickets at the ticket booth without shelling out any more money. I've tried methods 2 and 3 successfully and very conveniently. While I have an ePlus card, I have to yet to try that - and will let you when I do. As for food - there's the usual popcorn and chips selection next to the theaters, while restaurants inside SM North close at 10pm, which is a bummer for last show viewers. The next best bet is the outdoor balcony trail of restaurants at SM's Sky Garden; most are open till 11, so you have time to tuck in at least a coffee, or from a selection of bar chow places, burgers, and ramen. Parking is best in SM Carpark, the building in the rear; you can get in way past 10, they won't give you a hard time. To shorten your walk and hit the correct bridgeway, drive all the way to the end if your theater of choice is at The Block, the middle, if going to theaters 5-8; and parking close to the ramp gets you nearest to theaters 9-11.

They have 7 cinemas (4 in the old mall and 3 in the new one), and they have one of the comfiest seats in the metro (semi-reclining chair, pull up arm rests for couples ;) ) Downside to this is that it can be more expensive than other cinemas nearby, and Eastwood is not exactly a breeze to go to because of the C5 traffic. :( Still, I pick this because it's not crowded. Plus points for me and my claustrophobic tendencies. It's great for movie dates, barkada night outs and family weekend get togethers. I highly recommend to try out their bowling / pool area too! :D
