Why does Kansas have such good Mexican food?! It was a deeply satisfying experience on the way home from vacation. I would highly recommend this for the weary traveler and Mexican food fan alike! We saw great reviews on Yelp and ran out of the hotel. The location was across the street. Our stomachs sank as we drove up to a closed restaurant and abandoned parking. The joy was abundant as we read they had just moved down the street! We were greeted warmly when we walked in. Drinks came right away as we studied the menu. We were pleased at the good variety of Jarritos in the fridge. Wifey asked for chorizo queso to go with the house chips and that was better than we can get most anywhere we are. I got the La Bandera combo and it was so satisfying. It's been a minute since I got a chile relleno that was THAT satisfying. Also, I could order a plateful of their shredded beef chimichangas and be happy. But the chicken enchilada really held up too! Wifey got the Bernabe's Special and just about died wanting to finish the epic amount of food. All of it was so good! read more

Delicious, authentic Mexican food. They have an extensive menu with a wide variety of combination plate options. The food is delicious, and the portions are generous. Service was quick and friendly. The atmosphere and decor were fun and inviting. I had the two beef taco combo, and my husband had the two burrito (1 chicken, one steak) plate. Each combo included rice and beans which were both flavorful. The beans were smooth, without being runny. We were served warm, crisp tortilla chips and homemade salsa shortly after being seated. The salsa alone was five stars. It's the best I've had in years. It was served in small carafes. I mentioned to the server/owner how delicious I found the salsa, and he brought me another carafe. I seriously could have drunk it, but ended up pouring it on my tacos and rice so as to enjoy every tasty bit. I should have taken my pictures before we started enjoying our meal. Hah! I was so full when I left that I was grateful that I didn't spoil my meal by eating too many chips. read more

My husband and I are driving across the Country and had to stay the night in this one horse town. We found this place on Yelp. Exit 127 off I-70 in Kansas. This place is so good and authentic and reasonably priced you don't want to miss it. Coming here almost justifies the long ride through Kansas. This delicious and clean establishment is run so capably by a husband and wife team. He's in the kitchen making all the yummy, and she's out front with attentive service. You start out with complimentary table nachos and salsa. But these are not ordinary. The nachos are freshly made, and come out warm, thin, salty, and crispy with the adequate tensile strength to scoop with. The salsa is so fresh with the perfect amount of cilantro and isn't too watery or chunky. Just right. We ordered the tacos carne asada, tropicale burrito with steak, and chimichanga with chicken. All were generously portioned and tasted so good that we somehow managed to finish our plates. The carne asada tacos come with refried beans topped with melted cheese and bacon bits (I think) that are just so tasty!!! Thank you my fellow yelpers for telling the world about this gem. Delicious. I had the burrito tropical. It had steak, lettuce, guacamole, smothered in burrito sauce (warm salsa) and topped with sour cream, comes with side or rice and beans. It really tasted like a steak fajita in burrito form. Food was quick and chips and salsa were free. I Recommend if traveling through like we were. read more

So I walk in the door a few minutes before 6 pm, asked for a Happy Hour beer, and am told I'm too late. Not a big deal but not a great start. Then I order a 3 item combo plate. The masa in the tamale is uncooked. I couldn't distinguish the difference between the other 2 items. Both contained greasy ground beef...and that's all. No spices, no flavor, no nothing. No rice or frijoles either. From reading other reviews it's obvious there are people who like this place but my experience was awful. If you're in WaKeeney on Sunday this is the only game in town. I'll start with the margarita... it was fantastic. It was so good I almost slammed it. No kidding. The salsa was very good and also got guacamole and it was very good too. Actually the best guac I've had in a while. I ordered one of the molcajetes they had on the menu. It came out and it looked so incredibly awesome. To be honest it was a bit of a disappointment. It lacked seasoning. Then, with this covid crap going on, there was no salt and pepper on the table. It's a good thing I didn't wait to eat it until I got salt and pepper, because our waiter never came back. My dinner companion said his food was just "okay." We were just passing through, so probably won't ever be back. I hope they'll step up their seasoning a little. read more

That's the worse experience in a Mexican restaurant that I have in my life ..:firsts of all,we order two different plates with T-Bon each other, both with lots of fatty, not flavor at all they were really under cook from the way we ordered it , but im not here to talk about the food( witch it was just ok) , I want to talk the way they steal people or a least to us ! By not giving a proper recibe with prices ,of what's your order , at first they give us just a paper with words not understandable with not prices just with the total amount without prices or taxes , Higher then we have expect it , i ask for a proper bill to check my bill , and she gave me a small paper with blurred numbers and whenever I ask the waitress nicely for the formal bill she told me I need glasses because that the only recibe that they give to the people o a least to me ... i feel robed ! And not treated with respect ! ... and ohh I forgot to tell you , they charge for space sauce 1.99 for green and 1.99 for red , we pay 4.00$ for space sauce in a Mexican restaurant jejej that's hilarious , I'm telling you ( MEXICAN RESTAURANT DONT CHARGE FOR SPACY SAUCE ) the pic that I going to post is the recibe that i gave from the waitress ..! We arrived on a Sunday evening as we were traveling and on the road for hours on I-70. We were initially headed to another restaurant, but it was closed. Decided to stop here since it was right off the highway, and open. Servers were so gracious, friendly and attentive. Food was delicious- I had the pork verde, husband had the Tbone. Margaritas were amazing and packed a good punch. I'm so glad the other restaurant was closed and that we decided to eat here. I would recommend this establishment. Really yummy! We were traveling and needed a place to stop. All the food was super yummy and the meat was so tender and moist. The La Bandera was the best because it was a little bit of everything.
