Our friend recommended Las Hefas for an Authentic Mexican and also Latin American Food experience. This place is located in Hays, Kansas. The owner even came out to speak to us (he knew our friend who is a local). The Mayor of Hays, Kansas was also dining here; impressive. Our friend ordered: Freshly fried chicharrones with white queso dip for the table...ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I stay away from pork because of health reasons, but this dish was SUBLIME! We ordered: 2 Arepas filled with Chicken Plates and 1 Mexican Breakfast - Black Beans and Rice with Soft Scrambled Eggs. EVERYTHING WAS FANTASTIC! This place is great and I am happy that we visited here. I highly recommend. The freshly fried chicharrones with white queso dip is not on the menu and is a secret menu item. The food was authentic, service was very nice, very inflexible regarding their enchiladas--you have to buy three of one kind...that was unfortunate because if you don't know what they taste like now you're stuck with a plate you may not eat...so beware of that inflexibility. They were flexible with flour vs corn tortillas. Environment was fine..just a large open room. It's worth trying to see if you like it. I don't know if we will return or not...we'll just need to see. We were travthrough Hayes on a long road trip and needed a good food stop. Las Hefas was amazing! Excellent and attentive service. We never had to ask for a thing. Our waitress was fabulous. We both had the Ropa Vieja for lunch. What can I say, it brought me right back to when he was stationed in Cuba. Authentic taste cooked to perfection. Ran a search for best margarita in Hays Ks and Las Hefas popped up- restaurant is easy to get to with lots of parking. We sat at the bar and had a marg and dinner. Great experience overall- owner Israel makes a great margarita and you can tell how much he cares about his patrons and his food. We had the special of the day which was the cheese stuffed meatballs- the rice is delicious and freshly made tortillas are the best!!! We understood why they had run out and had to make more. Passing through Hays and had time to spend with an old friend, so I asked for suggestions to try something new - at least, someplace we haven't tried yet. Let me tell you...Las Hefas is, without a doubt, OUTSTANDING! From the friendly service to the meal, cocktails, tequila flight and appetizers...I cannot recommend this place enough. Keighlee was an absolute rockstar with service, and VERY proud to represent her workplace with smart upselling techniques and her bubbly demeanor. The space itself is kind of understated, which is fine by me when you're doing food this good. My wife and I both ordered the Arepas - I had the pork, she had the beef...and they were absolutely delicious. The fried plantains and slices of avocado were light and refreshing sides. The guacamole dip is perfect - not too salty, really fresh tasting and not overloaded with anything to excess. Keighlee mentioned that they've been open about a year, and while it wasn't too busy for a Wednesday night, I hope this isn't too hidden from the main parts of town. It's a very tasty, modern looking Latin restaurant. It has influences from Cuba, South America, and Central America in addition to Mexico. We stopped by on a road trip and it was well worth the five minute diversion off the freeway. The service was fast, friendly, and efficient. Everything is house made and tastes fresh. The greeter was friendly and cheerful, the decor much different and less gaudy than most Mexican restaurants we find in the US, more like a modern, minimalist atmosphere that you find in many Mexican cities . The decor is tasteful, with lovely artwork and music. The food is very fresh, authentic and delicious. I had chips and one arepas and I was full (had an extra meal for later). The Paloma was heavy on the sparkling water which I didn't enjoy (tasted watered down). The menu has the usual Mexican dishes with a smattering of Central American dishes added in. We had a salsa sampler, all fresh; my wife had ropas, my son had barbacoa tacos, and I had higado encebollado (liver with onions). All came with tortillas made fresh that day. While visiting Hays, Kansas, my son and I discovered this fantastic restaurant. The Mexican food is some of the best I have had anywhere, including in Mexico! I was told that a lot of the dishes are prepared by the Mexican grandmother of the owner! It is far from ordinary and is instead, exceptionally delicious. The service is very good. Our waitress was very friendly and sweet we went there both nights. The ambiance is adequate. The place is very clean and comfortable. What the restaurant lacks in ambiance is more than overcome by the quality of the cuisine and the service. I recommend it highly! read more

Excellent food and top notch service. I enjoyed my amazing lunch and chatting with the server. They have specials frequently, so watch for the barilla tacos! The Tres Leches Cake is spectacular, so save room for dessert. I had the vegetarian dish, Pupusas. They come with a pickled cabbage side, a bowl of red sauce, and a big bowl of black beans with cheese on top.
