I can't think of a single bad thing to say. I came here to get dinner while on a work trip and the food is so good that I want to come back to Albany just so I can eat it again. The location was conveniently near my hotel, the food is already hot and ready so I barely had to wait, the service was very accommodating and friendly, the prices are reasonable, and even the other customers were nice. I had a great experience. Oxtails, spinach, green beans, and jollof rice are all delicious. I never want to eat another rice that's not jollof rice again. The only drawback is that I'm so full on my dinner that I don't have any room left to taste the pound cake. Edit: I went back the next day with a colleague and got the turkey wings. I used to get take out from Tropical Taste often when I had a volunteer gig in East Albany This tiny restaurant is far better than its neighbor with a similar cuisine in the same strip mall. I enjoyed the jollof rice, the plantain, the creamed spinach and the jerk chicken. The only thing I ever bought here that I didn't like was the cornbread which had sugar in it. Given such raved reviews of it, I decided to try it. My second time at this restaurant and I was not satisfied. I got the curry oxtail dinner and was only given four oxtails. For the price of the dinner I should have received way more than what was served. I have been to many Caribbean restaurants and never experienced anything like this before. So I had some time yesterday and decided to make a trip to the east side of Albany! I read the reviews on this establishment weeks ago and said "I would like to try it out" and the staff was nice and willing to answer my questions. As you first walk into the establishment you notice all the chairs are on top of the table. In this pandemic I do not blame them for not allowing seating in their establishment right now! And you MUST have a mask to be served. They have a very large television in the corner so I was watching the news as I waited in line to be called and give my order. And they also have a section leading to the back labeled Grocery so you may shop for whatever they have for sale (extremely large bags of rice, seasoning, etc. I'll venture back there next time I was just tired yesterday. They have a larger sign with a menu but also once you get up to the counter (which is sectioned off with glass/hard plastic to keep people from spreading anything to the workers or food) you see a smaller menu with that specific days items being served. I got the oxtail combo. Any combo comes with 2 sides a main item, cornbread, and a drink (I chose a bottle of water) Now usually when I eat oxtails I add hot sauce out of habit but I made sure to not add anything before I tasted the food. Even so I did not need to add ANYTHING to this meal because it was perfect just as is! They give you a good helping of everything (which I love) oxtails have all fat kept on (again I love, let me decide if I want the fat or not because I did want it ) the spinach had a little kick to it well seasoned perfect with the cornbread. Speaking of the cornbread it was homemade and had corn kernels in it. Tasted a bit of sweetness so I'm guessing they used a little brown sugar because it was perfect (not sweet like Jiffy but just a tap of sweetness). The Jollof rice I actually have had better at a friends house BUT still delicious! If you are wondering what Jollof rice is just think of what we call in the south Red Rice (because it's exactly the same thing just prepared differently) and to top it all off I had plantains that were cooked exactly how I like them. All this was $17 I do recommend this place because like all of Albany, you cannot judge a book by its cover. Meaning don't be afraid of the area that the shop is in if you aren't from Albany! 10/10 I'll be back with my friends and family for sure! read more

So I visited my cousin and he brought me here for lunch the food was so good! I had the jollof rice and the lemon pepper wings. The jollof was too spicy but had an excellent flavor and the wings were tasty. The cornbread was soooooooo good. Defintely will eat here again if in town. read more

I will be staying in Albany for 3 days and somehow everywhere I look there are a lot of "seafood" restaurants ( don't know why ). Of course I decided to balance the seafood with some other type of food so that's how I ended up at Tropical Taste. This is an African restaurant and the owner is actually from Nigeria. It is located on a not so appealing strip mall but that's not important to me. This restaurant had very limited dishes but they change everyday so that you can always try something different. All the dishes are prepared and displayed cafeteria style. I tried all of them and they were great !! The oxtail was perfection !, the spinach was amazing. The jaloof rice, plantains and corn bread were excellent compliments. There were also some chicken wings ( not very African but also tasty ). Tuesday's and Thursday's they have goat !!! The owner was really nice and friendly, she gave me a little bit of all the dishes so that I could try . Price was cheap also. Don't expect fancy, come for the food and you will not be disappointed. read more

Dropped in for lunch here on a Monday and was very impressed. The staff provided a wonderful mix of African food with a good variety of choices. I had the tropical chicken and it was sweet and spicy (w/a kick) with their famous Jollof rice... YUM!!! Also, I had the nice tender spinach(not soggy at all), cornbread (fluffy), and the tiniest most well-seasoned field peas I have ever tasted. It is in the plaza with Oydessey Records! Was attempting to go to Jamaica next door, but they were apparently closed at 7:15 on a Monday night Got a mix of jerk and baked chicken, jollof rice, stewed spinach and field peas. The chickens were both very good, although the jerk would have been even better if the heat level were kicked up a little (I'm not a pepper-head, but you expect jerk to bring something a little north of a a lip tingle). Tender and flavorful otherwise. If forced to choose, I would have picked the jerk Spinach was good and had a nice spicy finish. It was well, we'll overcooked, which is kind of the point, I think. Anyway, I liked it. The peas were well seasoned and perfectly edible, but not spectacular. That is not really a criticism The only thing that really let the plate down was the plantains. Undercooked and with not of the crispy/chewy edge that makes plantains so special, they didn't stand up to the rest of the meal. Excellent value too. I do wish they had a diet soda option (there were none in the case) I'll add this place to the Albany rotation for sure read more
