The salon is clean, cute and small. It's not stuffy or overly priced. Plenty of parking on Deer street and right across the street from the salt piles, Troupe is a great place to get a tremendous hairstyle without the hastle of being downtown. Samantha was my stylist. She was attentive not only to myself but my guest as well. She listened to what I was looking for and fit it perfectly to my face. I went to Samantha for my first visit at Troupe. I went from longer medium length hair to short about two inches above the shoulders and I am very happy with my haircut. I received lots of compliments. She added texture and depth to it by razor cutting into it. This is good for my type of hair since it's thick and it also takes some of the bulk out. This left my hair nice and light and easy to style. Samantha was also very nice and easy to talk to. I will definitely book again. read more

As an out-of-towner, and not a regular customer, I was able to book a same day appointment for a cut and color on very short notice. I'm always nervous about using a stylist other than my regular stylist at home. Christy Flanagan was amazing with suffestions for improvements and turning out a beautiful new style and color. I would rate the salon itself higher (nice, clean, bright), but I got my haircut a few weeks ago and I'm still not over how badly it turned out. My hair was cut much shorter than I had asked for it to be cut. Prior to getting my hair washed I discussed a length with my stylist (Chris), but my overall length ended up about two inches shorter than what I thought we had agreed on. Then Chris cut short layers into it (which for some reason are only on the left side of my head, even though my hair was cut using the part I usually wear). Now, that I think about it, he didn't talk me through the cut or ask for my input. It's been a few weeks, but the layers are still choppy and short on the left side. It will be months before these layers grow out, and I'm pretty disappointed with the way I look. This doesn't seem to be the norm for the salon. I've had friends who have visited other stylists here and loved what they've walked away with. Update: The owner of Troupe has been more than accommodating, and has offered to fix the stylist's mistake and refund my money. He's done everything he can! Just wanted to add that. read more

I've twice come in here for a last-minute haircut with Samantha. She's great! I have short hair that often gets overgrown and sloppy. I'm no fashion genius, so I like that she looked at me and had a vision, which she then described to me to see if I was on board. It's a bit shorter than I expected, but the haircut complements my features really well. I'd definitely go back. I also like conversations with Samantha. She's a winner! read more

I was donating a lot of hair to locks of love and decided to go for short hair. I looked on the internet to find places, Troupe lists five stylists and their credentials. All look good, except I was worried about having the junior stylist. I called and got an appointment with a lady, so I didn't worry. Well, she wasn't listed on the site, but she was young, so definitely didn't have the experience I wanted. I bought in my computer to pull up Pintrest and talk about what I want and to show pictures. I thought the consultation went well. The cut is way shorter than I expected on the side (about 2"). The blending is chunky, which I pointed out how I like the sleek blends. I wanted length so it would be easier to grow out to a bob. There is no length except on top. It is very square because the sides are short and straight. All in all, I look like an emo boy when I wanted something short, but feminine and elegant. It is a very masculine cut with the way the hair was done around the ears. I'm going somewhere else to see what can be done for damage control because I can't believe the mark was missed so badly when I bought in a computer and showed numerous pictures. I wasn't charged for it, which was good. Update: The owner got in touch and offered to have the senior stylist fix it. I had already gone elsewhere, but I only think it is fair to say that everything was handled correctly by them. read more

I had the same hairdresser for years when I moved to the area, and she ended up moving out of town leaving me to find a new place. I saw the previous reviews for Troupe were positive and read the staff's credentials on their website before calling for an appointment. They were able to get me in the next day which was great. I was handed off to Amy, who's online bio states she has extensive experience with color and even instructs others on techniques. I had something I thought would be easy to fix (one solid section of color that just needed corrected towards getting back to my original color). Her so-called technique cost me upwards of $200 and even worse, left me looking as if nothing was even done. She got me in last minute, yes, but I was also treated as so; she rushed to get me done and in turn didn't do the job I paid for. Small things in the process also turned me off from ever returning here; the lack of friendliness, witnessing another stylist getting shampoo in another clients eye (enough I heard her complaining), and being hit in the head with the heat lamp by my stylist simply due to lack of attention on her part. She also recommended a product that reacted adversely to my hair, leading me to believe it is truly just a business looking to get clients in and out as fast as possible and load them up with products without having their best interest in mind. I've since gone to In Boston, also in Portsmouth, where it took them 7 hours to fix what had been done. The other stylists at Troupe may be better, but I can only go off of my experience with Amy, which was an extremely disappointing one. read more

went to see samantha as a first-time client and am very happy! i had very damaged and over-processed box color hair (a stylists nightmare, i know) and samantha was more than willing to to help me achieve the look i want (faded red to blonde). she was so personable and made me feel welcome and at ease, and really took care to make sure that my hair was healthy while still getting the most color change done. she seems to really enjoy what she does, and it shows through her work. i am looking forward to going back to see her to finish the process. very glad troupe was recommended to me, and am thankful for samanthas talent and great attitude! read more

This was the singularly worst experience I have ever had with a stylist. Mary Dolan not only did NOT listen to a thing I said, she did the exact opposite of everything I asked for. I had been growing my hair out, and I told her I wanted to be able to pull it back - she cut it to my chin! I told her I did not want to go too dark, I was blonde but am now a brunette. Finally, I told her I had been wearing a bob for 20 years, and was trying to get away from that look - I came away with a bob! YIKES! This woman is absolutely insane! Very unhappy person. I should have gotten up from the chair an run from the salon...Stay as far away from this place as possible. The fact that you have to wait a long time to get an appointment doesn't always mean the person is good at what they do. Very disappointing. read more
