i researched where to get a haircut in the area that was local to me. i called twice to confirm my appointment, got cold feet in between my calls and going because i was so nervous they would butcher my hair. i have curly hair. i have had stylists fuck it up in the past. six degrees popped up as a curly girl certified salon. they are qualified to do deva cut. i did not want the deva cut specifically but I wanted someone who could navigate their way around a curly head of hair for a trim. they scheduled me with a stylist who was inexperienced cutting my hair type. which i thought was odd as i called twice to go over the appointment. i stayed to go ahead with a deep conditioning treatment that i needed. the stylist doing it said my hair was "crispy" and needed a cut. ya don't say skippy? that's why i came. the stylist then applied product to my hair. i left with wet hair by choice as my hair type dries out easily so i never apply heat to it. once my hair dried at home it was clear to me the stylist had no idea what they were doing when they styled my curly hair. i would not recommend this salon for anyone interested in curly hair treatments. read more

Ask for Jessica. She listens to what you want-- then executes brilliantly. Jessica is a dynamite cutter and amazing with color. She's young, energetic, and she trained with a Boston hair maestro: so she can do things a little more modern, a little funkier; she has quite a range. Twelve thumbs up. Six Degrees Salon is a no-tipping salon. I hadn't seen this before. So prices may seem a little higher than usual but a)it would be worth it anyway, and b)without tipping, prices work out about the same. The no-tipping policy saves that ridiculous shuffle at the end when you're all relaxed from having your hair played with and can't remember how percentages work. I regretfully make this review, but don't bother with this salon. The owner, Angel, is a fake. She never greets her customers unless she's forced to do their hair, and even then she's really disingenuous and pretentious. I got my hair colored one time from one of her employees and was horrified with how it came out and especially how this colorist tried to rush me out the door since she couldn't wait to go out to dinner with her friends. I take my hair very seriously, and have no qualms paying $150 for a session, so to shell out my serious cash for the worst result ever is majorly depressing. So, if you have a bullshit detector and can smell a fake group of people when you see it, it will go off the charts when you go into 6 Degrees. read more

I just returned from my first visit to Sherry Macdonald. As other reviewers have stated she's wonderful! She listened attentively to what I was looking for, and executed the cut beautifully. She even offered useful tips for easy styling I had never heard before. I am very picky about my stylists, and am accustomed to paying big bucks at B and B or Oribe in NYC. I think I landed in hair stylist heaven! Amazing cut, friendly competant stylist and beautiful little salon. I was eager to leave a gratuity and found out the salon is non-tipping- holy cow! My only small criticisms are: I had to schedule my appointment about 4 weeks out and take an appointment mid day- so be ready to book in advance. Also, the receptionist was on the phone for literally 7 minutes before even making eye contact with me when I came in for my appointment. Not a huge deal, but not very welcoming for a new client. read more

I continue to love this place. I go to Sherry, but all stylists seem to have their faithful following. I love Sherry for her coloring skills and knowledge. Results are always better than what I imagine. They are good at what they do AND they listen and are attentive. Some places are very good, but don't listen to what you want and end up giving you a style impossible for the average girl to maintain. Others listen to what you want, but aren't skilled enough to produce anything better than your mom could do at home. 6 Degrees Salon is the perfect balance: skill and respect for clients. They are very popular. I often have to make an appointment a month or two in advance. However, their staff is superb and will work with you to call you if there's an opening if you need to get in sooner. Finally, as previously mentioned, they absolutely won't accept tips - not only is it not expected like everywhere else, but if you try they actually refuse it. They say, "just keep coming back"... I don't know HOW anyone could give this place a less than 5 star review. From the moment you make an appointment to the time you leave- you feel welcomed, happy and satisfied. Every head of hair walking out the door is beautiful. Also, the location is fantastic- view of Portsmouth, the river and tug boats? I'm hooked. Side note: the owner, Angel, is WONDERFUL and sweet and her little Boston terrier is snuggly and cute. I have been going here now for about a year. I see Janna. Janna is fantastic and really patient with me. She always cuts my hair beautifully, but today she fixed something that I thought could never be corrected. I was given a "clear gloss" by a friend- and it stripped all my dirty blonde color out of my hair. I had been growing my natural color for 3 years and LOVED it. In one swoop it went away. I don't know HOW she did it- but she, and the help of 2 others, worked for 2 solid hours on my hair until it was perfect. Back to my natural color, silky texture and perfect. I had just got a cut on Saturday from Janna, so finally I am able to enjoy it! Take my advice and make an appointment. If you didn't love your hair before, these gals will certainly change that. read more

I visited this salon via a recommendation from a friend. I am crazy picky about my hair- so I get very skeptical when trying someplace new. Since moving to New England from California- I had yet to find "my salon"- well... I have found it! First- The aesthetics of this place relax and rejuvenate. The views of the harbor really make the visit special and an experience. Second- I went in with a picture of the color I wanted... I also explained what I was looking for/ saw in the color. The stylist didn't completely match the color of the photo but heard my request and got very close ( I actually like my color a little better than the photo) Third- Parking is so easy- there are spots directly outside of the salon. Fourth- I overheard the stylists talking about another stylist that was taking a brush up course on "bob cutting", I appreciate a salon that is hip and current on trends and styles and I believe this place does a great job. Its like getting Boston style and Chicness without having to drive into the city!! Fifth- I was impressed with the prices and the no tip policy. my old landlord recommended this place a couple years ago...LOVE. IT. a couple of the things i love: *their decor is awesome...modern and rustic both pay homage to how historical a city portsmouth is...and the part of the city in which the salon is located. i love the reclaimed wood mirrors. *overlooking the harbor. tugboat views FTW! *they do not accept tips. it's so maverick for this industry! i like knowing when i go in...this is the price for a haircut...i will pay that price, and there will be no angsting over, "she did a great job...what is a good tip?! i want her to do a great job again next time!" i think the prices are quite reasonable for the excellent product they offer and how much work the stylists put in to staying current and educated. read more

I've been going to Six Degrees for seven years, and I'm always happy with the results. Angel, the owner, is the kind of stylist that won't touch the scissors or the color until she's absolutely sure you're both on the same page - the Pinterest board and color samples come out, she shows you what she means by "one inch" and she makes sure you understand the type of maintenance required for what you want. If anything isn't perfect after you go home, she'll happily correct it. The entire staff here stays up on trends for color and styling techniques, the atmosphere is fun and relaxing (with a beautiful view), and the no-tipping policy removes all awkwardness at the end of the visit. read more

She asked all the right questions to figure out exactly what I wanted - and recommended a balayage treatment, saying that I could call her back a few days later if I decided it wasn't for me and she would do highlights for free. 6 degrees is definitely the best salon in the area! They do ombré, balayage and surely other styles that other salons in the area don't have on their menus. Chelsea is the bomb, absolutely accommodating and super talented; I have no doubt that the other stylists exhibit the same level of excellence! I never, ever write reviews, in fact I think this is my first time doing it, but I've been meaning to ever since I had my hair cut at 6 Degrees back in December. I have battled with my hair since I was 13, it's both wavy and straight in parts, soft and fine or coarse and frizzy depending on which layer of hair you're looking at. Impossible. Angel cut my hair and was fantastic. She listened to what I wanted and was honest about what was a good idea or not a good idea. She also really listened when I described what about my hair is difficult and she believed me...strangely most hairdressers dismiss what I'm saying and go ahead and cut however they feel like. In the end she managed to make my long, straggly sheep hair look amazing. I got compliments for days afterwards and I've never once in my life felt so good about my hair. I was spurred to write this review because I was due another haircut, but sadly I don't live in the Seacoast area anymore. I went to a random hairdresser in my city and got a mediocre haircut from someone who committed all the old crimes of not listening and not believing what I was telling her about my hair. It made me recognize how fantastic my experience at 6 Degrees had been. You can get cheaper haircuts in the area but 6 Degrees is so worth it, especially if you or your hair is high-maintenance. Frankly it's almost worth the plane ticket across the Atlantic to get my next haircut from Angel. read more

I LOVE this Salon. Heather is fantastic and has cut my hair for the past 2 or so years. My hair is thick and wavy and she is very skilled at cutting curly or wavy hair, spends a lot of time on my difficult hair, and listens to what I like. I tend to keep my hair short and it's refreshing to have a stylist who will actually cut hair short rather than being conservative and keeping it longer. Other pros: the views are beautiful, the no tip policy, and the super reasonable prices for the quality of cut. Go to Heather, especially if you have curly or wavy hair! read more

I'm very particular about my hair and they really get it right! I love that they are always continuing their education and they really get to know you! Heather really does a great job and really knows her stuff! only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 are the prices- for a college student it makes getting my hair done leave my wallet very empty but worth it! I had a cut with Chelsea a few weeks ago. HOW MUCH DO I LOVE THIS HAIRCUT! I went based on the good salon reviews but didn't have a particular stylist to request, and booked whoever was available. So glad I got Chelsea. I explained what I was interested in and she brought over some photos that another client of hers had brought in for reference. It was just what I was looking for, and I feel like, for once, someone gave me an age-appropriate cut/style that works for me and that I can have fun with. A few weeks later, I think I like it even better than when I first got it cut. I'll definitely be back. She noted that she gives free touch-ups/trims if there's an area I'm having trouble with as it grows in. So far, it's growing in terrifically and I don't see needing this, but it's nice to know. Also it's great that they are a non-tipping salon. I think $50 for a cut is pretty on-par with other similar salons, but not having to tip makes the overall price significantly lower. However, I would have gladly tipped her well because it's such a great cut. Highly recommended! read more

Wow what a great experience!! After a break up with my old hair dresser I thought that finding a new one would be a long and crazy task. Based on the reviews I called 6 Degrees and spoke to Chelsea who understood what I was looking for and made my appointment. When I got there she was super nice and very trendy! I'm new in town and did a search on Yelp for a hair salon and found 6 Degrees. All I can say is WOW! My stylist, Heather, gave me the best foil and cut I have ever had! She took her time and didn't rush as some stylists do and really listened to what I wanted. I tried giving her a tip but she said that they do not accept tips...now that's a change! I felt bad because she certainly deserved one! I was greeted right when I walked in and was offered a drink. The ambience is beautiful with a gorgeous setting overlooking the ocean...what more could you ask for! I highly recommend Heather and 6 Degrees and will definitely be back! read more

I decided to give this place a try after reading the previous yelp reviews. I have naturally wavy hair and am always looking for a place that knows how to deal with such hair. The cut was good. I wanted a shorter chin length do and the stylist came through. The atmosphere was stunning because of the views of Portsmouth harbor. BUT, I left feeling like they'd be fine if I never came back. It almost felt like they were doing me a favor by cutting my hair. I was up front and told them that I'm looking for a new salon and they did nothing special to make me feel like coming back. The shampoo and cut lasted 30 minutes tops and even though I didn't request a blow dry (because my hair dries better naturally), they still charged me $45.00. I appreciate the no tipping rule but I think if the cut is quick and easy and there's no blow drying, the price should be lowered. In fact, I didn't see prices listed anywhere and the no tipping policy didn't seem to be posted either, so I wasn't even sure about the no tipping thing until I went to give a tip and was told they don't accept them. I took my 9-year-old to Supercuts. Her haircut came out great and it was $20.00 cheaper. Lots less snootiness too. read more

I made an appointment here based off of reviews from others with curly hair. My appointment was with Heather and she did an amazing job! Prior to this haircut I'd never had my very curly hair cut dry, and it made all the difference! I went very short with my cut, from having been quite long, so I was nervous but I'm so so happy with the cut! It's been about two weeks and I'm still in love with my new hairdo! I was shocked and thrown off a little that she didn't even inform me about this, but the girl at 6 Degrees was so nice and gave me all the information of where she had went. I've been visiting the Portsmouth area from New York City and after getting a pretty terrible cut back home, decided to try 6 Degrees while I was in town. Man, this place did NOT disappoint. For one thing, it's probably the most gorgeous salon I've ever been in. Huge windows overlooking the harbor? YES PLEASE. I had a cut with Chelsea who was really sweet, easy to talk to and did a fabulous job. I basically said that I wanted something shorter with more body that worked for my face shape, embracing my natural wave (which I've been straightening for years) and easy to care for. She gave me probably one of the best cuts I've ever received and all the while, showed me exactly how I can bring out my natural curl. It's now several days later and I am so happy with my hair. It's a little pricier than I would usually go for, but it includes shampooing and blowdrying plus because they don't accept tips it works out in the end. Totally worth the trip up from New York. Honestly it's probably just the person who does my hair and not everyone there, but every time I go there my hairdresser makes me feel like she doesn't really care what I want and would rather do something easier than whatever I ask her to do. Both times I've gone here I will show a picture of what I want, and she'll say something along the lines of "we're not going to do that today, but we'll do this which is sort of similar" it's like she doesn't want to put the work in but still wants my money for what I've asked for. I asked for a cool toned full balayage, and instead she gave me some brassy three inch stripes across the top of my head. She always rushes me out. One time I even had partially wet hair as I walked out the salon. I always leave thinking "seriously? I payed full price for this?". I thought it would be better the second time around, but she half assed it again and I'm embarrassed every time I look at the tiger stripes on my head. Won't be coming back. read more
