Stay away! Shady office operation! [[HIGHLIGHT]]First of all, the receptionists are incredibly rude and aggressive. Heidi, in particular, was not helpful at all.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Even though the doctors here accept insurance, she flat-out refused to consider it. In a bizarre twist, the nurse walking us out confirmed we didn't owe anything, but Heidi insisted I had to pay $500. After the nurse spoke up, Heidi suddenly changed her tune and said, "Fine, you can pay $300." It makes you wonder what type of shady operation they are running here. They take zero responsibility for treating patients with insurance and overcharge you upfront. Now, many months later, the insurance company has paid them, but the office refuses to pay me back the surplus. They claim they have refunded me, but there is absolutely no track of any refund on my credit card. They literally just printed out a receipt with no actual money transfer behind it. I seriously wonder what type of operation they are running under the cover of a dental office. Do not trust them with your money or your care. read more

Dr. Follmar provided excellent surgical care for my son's bone graft and wisdom tooth removal, my overall experience with his office has been extremely disappointing due to the way billing and insurance were handled. After my son's procedure, I was unexpectedly told to pay $3,000 out-of-pocket on the spot. I was completely caught off guard, as I assumed the office would run my insurance beforehand and let me know the estimated out-of-pocket cost--every medical and dental office I've dealt with has done. Instead, I was told they would bill my insurance afterward, which could take about a month. Weeks later, my insurance confirmed they had never received a claim. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called the office to follow up, and after several calls back and forth, it turned out they had the wrong insurance on file--despite me giving them the correct information at the start.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Only after they corrected it did the claim finally go through. Moving to California with unfinished dental work was a leap of faith. I was in the midst of serious dental work that began with my motorcycle accident twenty years prior and I had a whole team of doctors in Chicago helping me to get my teeth back in order. Although I had plans to return to Chicago to have the work finished for good, I still had a lot of work that had to be done beforehand. Not knowing anyone in the dental field in California, I reached out to an oral surgery clinic that had a website showing their practice to be a multigenerational family practice that strives to treat their patients like family. This felt like a great start!! Much to my surprise, after learning of all the damage that my accident had caused to my teeth, the surgeon himself, Dr. Troy Follmar, reached out to me directly to invite me to come to his office for a consult. On the day of my appointment, I was welcomed warmly by his staff and after hardly any wait, I was taken to a room and given a quick X-ray. Dr. Follmar then came in to meet me. He was friendly and we spoke a bit about my accident. He saw I had a lot going on because of the trauma, but he was not scared off by how complicated my case was. Dr Troy Follmar messed up my jaw during the Dental Implant surgery. Dental Implants are nowadays so common. And unfortunately, I chose Dr Follmar to perform my implant surgery since it was hard to find a doctor during the covid surge. Dr Follmar was available then and with my bad luck, I chose him. Immediately, after the implant placement by Dr Follmar, I started experiencing painful TMJ jaw symptoms. For 51 years of my life, I have NEVER had any jaw issues. And these painful jaw symptoms started immediately on the very next day after he placed the implant. When I mentioned it to Dr Follmar, he was dismissive and claimed it is unrelated. Now, I need to live with TMJ symptoms for rest of my life. What was supposed to be a simple tooth extraction followed by implant resulted in a disaster for me. Now I am stuck with jaw pain and soft food for life. After the surgery, Dr Troy Follmar admitted that he had placed the wrong size implant. And then extracted it again to replace it with a larger size one. I suspect that this resulted in nerve damage causing TMJ. Furthermore prior to the surgery, Dr Troy Follmar had assured me that he would be using Straumann impant which is considered as a top manufacturer. But after the surgery, he calmly told me that he put some other brand of implant since he was out of Straumann implants. I was baffled at the inefficiency and lack of planning. First of all, he had taken multiple CT scans to examine the jaw and identify size of the implant needed. And still ended up using the wrong size implant. Overall, my life is ruined eating soft foods for rest of my life. I would strongly caution others to carefully evaluate your options prior to choosing Dr Troy Follmar. Procedure: wisdom teeth removal. The office coordinators are responsive and they're able to answer questions about scheduling, insurance, etc. Upon arrival both of my children were asked to check in, waited for a few minutes and they went in to get X-rays and had to watch a short video about the procedure. Each patient had an assistant to answer some questions we had while we wait for Dr. Follmar. The dentist was straightforward, he explained things in a simple manner and he was very reassuring. I brought my two sons to have the wisdom tooth extraction by Dr. Troy Follmar last year. It took me a long time to write the review because it was hard for me to share what I saw. My first son had IV anesthesia. Dr. Tory Follmar came from other patient without washing his hands nor putting gloves on to start IV. I saw they were ready to reuse the IV bag from previous patient. The assistant explained that the tubing would be changed but not the bag. I requested to have the whole set changed, but then I was told to leave and wait outside. The good part was that procedure was quick and anesthesia was just right. My second son was 17, so I got to sit in during the procedure. My son and I requested not to have IV anesthesia since it was not guaranteed new. We booked the first appointment at 7:45AM. Dr. Follmar came again without washing or putting alcohol gel in his hands. He put on gloves and put on a procedure gown already had blood stains on both sleeves and started the procedure. I questioned that the gown was dirty and there was blood on both sleeves. He did not comment nor having any effort to change. He just said "we always wash our gowns" when he left the room. Even though we came for the first appointment at 7:45 AM, I saw the used IV bag from the previous day was hanging there if we chose to have IV anesthesia. The pro for these visits was that the procedures were done quickly. The cons were that the clinic was not kept up with the trend to be patient centered. Washing hands, starting IV with gloves, using new IV supplies, new gown or clean gown with no blood stains before procedures were the basic protection for patients. read more

Dr. T Follmar is very kind and this review can not speak for his quality of work, BUT some* of the front desk people are rude, especially LESLIE, I'm astonished by her lack of interpersonal skills and how RUDE she comes across. I changed my mind last minute while in the waiting room about getting an extraction, Dr. came out and told me he would look at it and not charge for x-rays (I already had x-rays sent to the office from the endo I saw earlier that day, along with a CBCT, so I wouldn't have need them anyways). Needless to say, a claim of 149$ was filed to my insurance, I wished they expressed that prior to sitting in the dental chair for that 5 minute consultation because I wasn't going to extract the tooth anyways. I found that very shady. IN ADDITION, I was informed by the person at the front desk and the person through the phone that my insurance, Metlife PPO was in-network. I've asked this a MINIMUM of 3x, and all of those times they confirmed that I was in-network. When my claim gets filed, guess what, they're out of network and I'm slapped with a high co-pay for a consultation. I feel extremely deceived, being told one thing, and confirming over and over again for it to not be like what was said. If they informed me that Dr. T Follmar was out-of-network, I would have visited a different office. And just a suggestion, I would not recommend having Leslie in the front answering phone calls, and please be 100% sure of the insurances that are in and out of network, so your patients would not be left in the dark. read more

I had to have an emergency extraction with an extremely infected tooth I can't tell you how frightening the dentist has always been to me for some reason I have had this extreme fear and to make it worse I was in severe pain .Dr Follmar reassured me that that i had a medical emergency and he dealt with cases like mine all the time raction so I sucked it up and did do it and I am so beyond grateful that I listened to him I didnt feel anything I have an extremely low pain tolerance I'm also kind of just a wimp to be mild about it. If I could give 10 stars I would. I am so pleased with the way that Dr. Follmar treats his patients. Very professional. I came in with so much pain in my jaw that I could barely open it. He is incredibly knowledgeable on what to look for and how to treat conditions that some dentists and oral surgeons might miss or not be aware of. My other dentist completely missed the fact that there was a small piece of bone stuck under my wisdom tooth socket that became infected. Within 30 min Dr. Follmar found the issue and prescribed me the right antibiotics and pain meds. I am pain free and my jaw is slowly healing. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Also, their office is incredibly CLEAN and nice inside. The front desk knows how to treat incoming patients. The customer service provided was the best I've experienced. I had a great experience during my wisdom tooth consultant and extraction today. I was pretty anxious, but the staff and Dr. Follmar explained everything in detail as we went over my different options. I usually never write reviews, but I'm feeling pretty thankful right now for Dr. Troy and his staff. My wisdom tooth was severely infected and I needed to get an emergency extraction, and they squeezed me in last minute per my dentist's referral. I was in excruciating pain, so the compassion he showed was very reassuring for the situation, and made me feel calmer considering I was alone and very, very scared. I had never got an extraction or surgery of any kind, so I was really scared of embarrassing myself from the anesthesia, having no control over my behavior pre and post surgery, and having one look at the operating chair frightened me to to say the least. Dr. Troy showed nothing but compassion for my situation. True and pure bedside manner, compassion, and care are qualities that every doctor needs in my opinion. My primary doctor sent me to Drs Follmar's (family) office for pain close to my left ear. Dr Kenneth (the father) could not diagnosed my pain, after two visits, so he decided to pass me, to Dr Troy (the son). It would be a good chance to let his son, get some experience and make some extra money. I doubt, if he is more than 30 years old. Besides he deserves to put his hands on someone and this one happened to be me. I would not wish to my worst enemy, what I went through with Dr Troy. In the beginning he was reluctant to treat me and he sent me to Dr Jehenson but after I met her, she thought I needed to go for physiotherapy. I went, but I did not find any benefit and after that, I decided to go back to see Dr Troy. He believed that I had fluids by my left ear (at the end of the jaw) and as he said, he would take care of it with some needles. The name of the procedure is called, Joint Aspiration or Arthrocentecis. When I came for the procedure on 10-10-14, the nurse asked me, "who are you going to see?". I said "I have seen the father, I have seen the son, now I'm waiting to see the Holy Spirit". It looked that I had predicted my ordeal. I felt that I almost met the Holy Spirit. When he finally decided to come to see me, he told me to follow him to the next room. At that time I decided to ask him if he is going to perform this procedure with the Ultra Sound machine and his answer was: "no, but I know anatomy very well " He had also promised me that, I will not feel pain, because he would numb the area. I was waiting for him 55 minutes and when I laid down, he did not have the patience to wait 15 minutes for the anesthetics to take over and he started poking me with the needles without feeling any numbness on my left side of my face. I was in so much pain, that I started screaming and kicking my legs. People could hear me on the other side of Bascom Ave. This torture in reality lasted about 5 minutes, but for me was like a century. At the end he felt satisfied and he said that he removed lots of fluids and that I needed to take four Motrin pills a day for 30 days, to avoid any inflammation. I believed him and for at least three weeks, I was taking Motrin and the result was, I gained at least five pounds. My stomach was bloated. Meanwhile, my nerve under my jaw close to my throat, got irritated from the procedure and I decided to go to see an Otolaryngologist (Dr. Lewis). He told me that the nerve pain will go away, but the pain by my ear, must be from Postherpetic Neuralgia. The bottom line is, all I needed was a Zostavax vaccine and now I am fine. By the way, Dr Troy did not take my insurance, so he wanted $148.00 for the diagnosis and $1,200.00 for the procedure. After I complained to him that the whole treatment was a fiasco, he offered to charge me $600.00 for the misdiagnosed procedure. So, I felt that $748.00 went down the drain. If you have something complicated, this is not the place to be. I wish, that I had something as a tooth extraction like most people who are visiting him and are giving him five stars, but.....I am not a simple patient read more

I took my 3 year old son in for his tongue-tie evaluation and there Dr. Follmar was more than happy to do the procedure on the same day. We opted for a local oral injection for numbing and the entire procedure went very smoothly. It only took about 5 days for the stitches to dissolve completely and now everything inside his mouth looks so great like he never had that tongue-tie in his life. For context, I'm a 30 years old male who presented to Dr. Follmar with all 4 fully impacted wisdom teeth to be removed. I elected for general anesthesia and 2 bone grafts. I had originally seen Dr. Follmar a couple years ago for the same issue but at the time there weren't any symptoms that indicated they needed to be removed. This time I had a slight infection and pus in my lower right area, so it was time for removal. Dr. Follmar has outstanding bedside manner and his team was very kind throughout the process. I was worried about payment because my insurance was only going to end up paying for about a third of the overall cost (~$3k final balance after insurance). They offer a 12 month no interest payment plan which was the difference between getting the procedure done or not (so glad!). Procedure day was blessedly uneventful. I show up, they put on the nitrous and the IV for general anesthesia, and I wake up with some gauze and blood in my mouth (totally normal). Doc provided everything I needed in regards to instructions. I have some lingering numbness in my left jaw/lip due to bruising of the nerve near the extraction site, as well as some radiating pain due to same cause. This is all normal, and when I called the doc to let him know, he had me meet him at his office (on July 4th no less!!!) for a followup painkiller prescription. He also offered to do a "sedative dressing" but those wind up delaying recovery time in addition to more effective pain management. I wish I had the same positive experience most people have had with Dr. Follmar but I must've caught him on a bad day. I took my daughter in for a wisdom teeth removal consultation after receiving a referral from our orthodontist. Instead of experiencing a positive, informative and reassuring consultation, we were met with loads of arrogance, a scripted dialogue, and were made to feel as if we were an inconvenience and just another surgery. Aside from all that, what bothered me the most was his lack of listening skills. He kept interrupting me with his know-it-all attitude, didn't even care that my daughter had another medical issue that needed to be fully addressed prior to having the surgery done, and even downplayed what little I was able to communicate to him. In the end, all he cared about was having me sign off on the paperwork to have the procedure done. All in all, he not only wasted his time, but wasted ours as well. read more

This doctor, or more likely his father, saved my tooth. Years ago I had a difficult problem with one of my molars. It had a very weird root structure and even a root canal would not make it so I could eat on it. One of the delicate roots must have been cracked from recent tooth straightening, so as a last ditch effort, Dr. Fulmar was consulted. He was not even sure he could save it, but he sure did! My dentist referred me to Dr Troy Follmar after hours (8 pm). It was an emergency. Dr. Troy Follmar immediately took time to call me after 8 pm and go through our three immediate options in the phone, including seeing me immediately, at night, to eliminate the pain and/or remove the tooth. He didn't know me at all or my insurance (which I had). He cared. My emergency was his emergency. I decided to see him at 7:30 am the next day.
