John the cashier also made my keys and when I went in today, had to find correct screw. Does he do everything at this store? I had asked for help and lady said John will have to help me. She covered register for him to help me find the screw. They didnt have it but he told me how to get online or from the company who made the grill. Both customers and employees are treated with attitude and passive aggressiveness by manager. Turn over rate is pretty high. So you can go visit one time in the year and another and chances are at least half the employees will be different. Items will be listed on their website but once a customer arrives they will find out the item was never in stock. Plenty of items on shelves are not in the system so you sometimes have to wait minutes for employees and customers to add the item to the sale as you try to check out. Overall don't recommend for customer or job seekers. read more

So about 8:30 this morning I wanted to mop the floors before my mother came over and I saw this leaking under the sink: No problem, right?! I think: I. Own. Tools. I. Can. Fix. Headed to True Value on Lexington Street in Waltham (hey, I know where a hardware store is!) to get a white screw thingy (slip nut and gasket). The manager Phil helped me find what I needed and helped me understand which way to put in the gasket. When I got back home, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it was still dribbling water and it wouldn't sit right... it's still crooked. Okay, maybe the gasket is too small? I flipped it In the other direction, too. Nope. Still leaking. Dunno. Back to True Value. Not too small, says Phil, I indeed had the right size and I just need to tighten it some more. Face palm. Back home again. I'm feeling almost like a warrior. Just me and a semi-death grip (aka: slip nut) wrench. I'm even more so determined NOT to have my dad drive in out of state. I will prevail! Anyways, my dad had showed me how to fix the faucet, so I am now a plumber! Trying to reposition everything, I just couldn't loosen the middle slip nut to make it easier and proceeded to pull the WHOLE trap out of the floor. OMG! No problem, call Dad. So he tells me I now need to get the second slip nut undone, but I can't grip it with the wrench. So I decide to hammer on it like you would a jar of pickles, hoping to release it enough to grip and turn. Not a good idea. Yep. Cracked like a walnut. Dad is now screaming on the speaker phone as to why in hell I'd do that ... it'll just break. I have no clue. Sounded plausible to me. Yes, I still have yet to understand the severity of my actions. Back to True Value, intent on seeking out Phil, to ask my options on repair, as it can't be as bad as my dad thinks. Welp, Phil finally realizes my dad isn't in my kitchen, but in CT. And that I'm trying to repair, what he kindly points out, is now a major job, via phone. I must be some kind of "special" because I am still unsure why I can't do this on my own. Phil starts saying things like glue...and I say things like my dad has glue! (Win-win!) Phil then turns from my bag of broken parts I brought in and after studying the trap photo on my phone says he thinks he's got a solution. Next, I see him going down some isle with an armful of white PVC. Moments later he comes out and says follow me. Phil is now putting together a new trap and letting me do some of it so I know how! New Trap AND a tutorial AND I got to help! I was so blown away from Phil's assistance! He really wanted to help me and also make it easy on my dad - not having to drive up here. Phil said give the left over glue to my dad the next time I see him, BTW. We laughed about that during checkout. Back home. The new trap worked like a charm! No leaks..until...there was one. Now what?! After testing for where the SECOND LEAK was coming from, it appeared to be the black plastic pipe connected to the garbage disposal. Dad on speaker again with me saying I don't listen because if I did I'd know which tool to use to unscrew the fitting without stripping it. Wrench is a wrench me thinks; and who remembers that stuff when you used it once: to fix the kitchen faucet - last October - which took almost an entire day. Used the socket wrench, after I tried and failed with the open ended wrenches. Dad was right. I was about to strip that rusted screw. So back I head to True Value (trip #4, in case you lost count) with another broken piece from beneath the sink, where I store most of my cleaners. Remember mom is driving in? It's almost 2:30. Now I really need to mop after the sink spillage. Phil was in the midst of a couple of projects. He asked about the new plumbing. Works great, I said, no leaks...Except for the other broken part I brought in. Though he was busy and hadn't even had lunch yet, he walked me again down that now familiar plumbing isle, garnering two parts for me. I was off to the people in the screw and nut isle. Boy, I was glad there are so many nice and helpful associates there, as I would have never found what I needed. And success! This whole experience was so positive that I had to share. This far beats out my experience at other stores and True Value will be my go to place from now on. I still need to mop the floors, but I feel such a sense of accomplishment! Update 6/30/17 Came here to purchase a utility cart that I saw on the local ad online. We couldn't find it in the store so the manager came out to assist. I didn't realize that the flyer was for 7/1. The manager gave us the sale price to save us from another trip. He also brought it to the car and loaded it in the back seat. This is the reason why I love this store and keep coming back! True Value was an absolute lifesaver for me to have nearby as I moved to the area in March. I was in need of various things, from lightbulbs to a screwdriver and various other household items for the bathroom, the kitchen and our bedroom. Oh and I also needed some items for my Weber grill. While it's not as big as a Home Depot, or possibly as cheap, they do makeup for it with their excellent customer service. I found their selection of things, from tools and grilling things, to cleaning products and lawn products to be fantastic. From fans and AC units, to charcoal, outdoor furniture and paint, they have you covered. So why go there instead of Home Depot? Well first off, you find things way quicker there. You won't get lost in aisle 135A trying to look for superglue. The store is big but not huge and is very well maintained, is clean and well organized as well. I've been a repeat customer of theirs and have not hesitated to go there even for one or two minor items. Every single time I've needed help everyone was very courteous and very helpful and for those grill fanatics out there, they're an official Weber retailer and carry a ton of things from charcoal to wood chips and all kinds of spices and parts. Best of all, they have a large, private lot and are conveniently located right on Lexington Street, just a minute or two away from Waltham's Common. read more

Local is Great! It was the Friday before the coldest weekend in half a century and, of course, our heat pump died. I looked on line and Home Depot was sold out of space heaters, so I went to our local True Value hardware in Waltham. They had a great assortment of heaters in stock. I bought two oil filled units. The salesman said that they too had sold out, but the warehouse was in Nashua NH, and they got restocked right away. The heaters did the trick, the house was warm (68) all weekend until the heat pump was fixed. Thanks True Value and staff! read more

I was trilled to learn that my arduous treks to Mt. Home Depot in Waltham might be over, and I was right...this place IS my new hardware store. This True Value is family owned and operated and has the hometown charm that the big-box stores seriously lack. Within minutes, I found exactly what I needed in plumbing and the clerk on staff was friendly and helpful. Definitely check this place out...it's much larger than it looks from the outside...the selection of home improvement supplies and tools is excellent. read more

1. Prices are marked up considerably compared to other places in my experience 2. Customer service is attentive, they ask if you need help, but for there on out, they're weirdly aggressive and not helpful ( example: "I TOLD you where the battery is" despite the fact he didn't actually listen to the type I wanted and I had to go back and explain to him again) 3. I drove out there w/ the fam after calling ahead for a specific item that he claimed was in stock. It wasn't. Totally unprofessional-- he said it was a mistake, but that's not a mistake, that's a deliberate falsehood. 4. Closed on Sundays, of all days. Never going back. read more

I thought the locally owned store was supposed to have the best customer service. On a recent visit this summer, I decided to buy a bag of grass seed. Not just grass seed, but that fancy brown stuff that fluffs up when you water it. That stuff was close to $40 for the bag, but I figured, what the heck. A week later, after I put the seed down, I am in Home Depot. I happen to be in the seed section and I notice the same bag of seed, same size, is $28. Seriously? No sale price, no clearance. Regular price was $10 less than True Value. True Value's price on the seed was 30% more than Home Depot. I was pissed. So I decide to go back to True Value and ask if they price match the other retailers. The girl at the register says, uh, no I don't think we do. Seh said she would call a manager to ask. I hear her talk to the manager on the phone who says that they don't price match. She hangs up and tells me so. So I ask to speak to the manager wishing to question him on if this was company policy. She rings him back up and he tells her that no, he would not speak to me and would not come to the front of the store. I could not believe what I heard. A store manager would not come to the front of the store to speak with a customer. Furious, I tell her that I was not leaving until I speak with the manager. Still no dice. I tell her I would find him myself, and walked to the back of the store over by the contractor counter asking for the manager. I was pissed and I wasn't leaving until I heard from him that the company policy is not to price match, and furthermore, not to grant a good will exception and offer some kind of a credit or coupon, or anything to keep the customer happy. Finally after a few minutes the manager comes out of his hole and asks if I am the one who wanted to speak with him. We have a relatively civilized conversation where he tells me that they do not price match for any reason. So I say that this would be the last time I shop at this store on principal alone and he says, fine, that's your choice, good bye. That's customer service? No thanks. I am practically on a first name basis with half of the Home Depot staff. Why would I shop T.V. when they just don't care if you shop there or not, and get to pay 30% more for the privilege? And the hours? Are you kidding me? A hardware/home goods store closing at 6PM every day and CLOSED on SUNDAY? WTF? read more

I have never been one to yelp - but after my experience with this store, I came home and created an account. I live about 15/ 20 minutes from true value and was short 2 door hinges. I called ahead to make sure they were still open and that they had the hinges I was looking for. After being told yes to both, I headed on down. I arrive and the nice kid at the desk walks me over the appropriate aisle. In the aisle, there were 3 salesmen standing around. After asking where the hinges were, I was told "they were doing inventory" and that I'd "have to come back tomorrow, they cannot sell anything in that aisle." I simply stated how my contractor was about to leave for day and that I was desperate. One condescending salesman said again with a higher tone "COME BACK TOMORROW!" I will just conclude by saying I will never go back to that store again. They had the hinges in stock, but due to "inventory" during store hours, they refused the sale. read more

I was delighted to see that a new hardware store had opened in the vicinity, but alas, my delight didn't last at all long; in fact, it was over within 2 minutes of my very first encounter. I needed to replace a hand-held shower for my mother, but the one I bought didn't swivel enough to work in her shower stall (her wall would have gotten a nice shower, though!). Plus, even though it wasn't obvious through the packaging, once opened, you could see it was clearly a cheaply-made piece of junk. I took it back the next day (with my receipt), and the manager told me I could not get my money back, because the package was opened. "I can't sell this again," he informed me and stalked off. As it happens, finding a shower for that bathroom turned out to be harder than I'd expected - a matter of trial and error- and every single other hardware store I went to understood that this is how it works in real life, and gave me no trouble at all about returning opened packages. How else can you find out?! Anyway, the manager was rude, condescending and dismissive - not a very good attitude for a place that's just opened and presumably wants to attract customers, and a totally impractical attitude towards returns for a HARDWARE store, in particular, as most of their customers are shopping there for DIY projects. NEVER give these jerks your business. read more

Was delighted to find a really large hardware store so close to home, thereby avoiding the trek to Home Depot. Although a pretty large place, the selection for many things is very limited and the prices considerably higher for the privilege of not having to go to a mega hardware store. But the annoying part of shopping there is the fact that there are many, many salesmen roaming the store but very little real help. They're often standing around talking to each other but once you actually find one to speak with, they barely offer any information or assistance. If that were Costco, they'd be better suited to giving out free samples. So when you're there, a salesman might vaguely point you to a section but that would be the end of any interaction. I've decided that convenience of location is definitely not enough. read more

I usually just head to Home Depot since it's a one stop shop for the most part. True Value is solid if you live close by. Building is modern and clean and everything I needed I found. Staff is knowledgable and helpful. Was in need of hardware for supporting an aging shed. The guys gave me a better idea for how to go about my project and it ended up coming out better than I expected. All of my questions were answered. Will be back for my next project. read more

This store is owned by a local Waltham family so although it is a new, modern building staff makes you feel like you are in an old time hardware store. They don't sell lumber, but they have just about everything else you need. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful and gives you the kind of service you just won't get at one of those big box stores. This is also a great place to get your propane tank refilled. If you want to shop local this is a store you should check out. Ample free parking in rear. read more

I have been to this store numerous times, pretty much know what I want and I go in and grab it. I always go in to grab stuff for the house, bird seed, grilling stuff, tools, buy ice cream for the kids at check out etc. It is more expensive than most hardware stores, which I chalk up to supporting the local guy and convenience. Today I went in received really terrible customer service. Like I said, I usually know what I want and I am in and out. Today, I needed some help cutting some chain (would have done it myself, but there is a sign that explicitly says not to). I could not get someone to help me after circling the store twice with my younger daughter. There was absolutely no one on the floor. There was one person at the register and about 6 people behind a desk doing something or other. After standing in line for a bit, I was told to go to the front register and wait in line there. I put the things down that I had collected while circling the store with my daughter and walked out. It turned out to be a complete waste of my time. Times must be good enough where my business is not needed. Also, there may be a need for training their staff, customer service and courtesy is easy. Look, I don't mind waiting, but customers should be acknowledged and not shuffled around in such a manner. After venting to my wife about the experience, she told me that she has had a similar experiences there and it is par for the course (she is not one to complain). One bad experience is not going to keep me away, but after talking to my wife about it further, I will absolutely not be going back. read more
