As someone who works in healthcare, I fully understand how important giving adequate care is. If I…read morecould give zero stars I absolutely would. I urge anyone considering Brookdale for their family too please reconsider. My granny was a nurse her entire life, Director of Nursing for a long time as well at the Sealevel hospital/Taylor's Extended Care so she taught me compassion and also how important loving what you do would turn into a reflection for your patients and their family. My granny DESERVED to pass with dignity. Every single person deserves that, along with their family. What we were given in return will forever haunt me. My granny was placed on hospice I'd say 1-2 weeks prior. (Hospice by the way that came in was great too me and showed my granny the love she desperately needed there. Also let me add they did have a few great nurses and aides but unfortunately only a few can't provide 24/7 care needed). When it was time to have our family come in because time was slipping away I immediately wanted us in our own room. Everyone deserves a room for privacy while making an end of life transition. On August 8th I arrived around 3pm. She was in the memory care unit with a room mate, no curtains for privacy are even in their rooms. Instead the roommate was taken out of the room and wheeled into a dining room area. Unfortunately and still unknown as to why, my granny had no medication for pain. We tried keeping her as comfortable as possible. No washcloth's were to be found. I asked for a mouth swab as her mouth was very dry and also none to be found. I drove to the medical supply store at 5pm for mouth swabs and to Walgreens for washcloths. We have a family of 20, and we all took turns coming in and out. At around 7, I asked someone how often they are checked on and repositioned. She said every 2 hours. I let her know I had been there since 3 and NO ONE even bothered checking on her, or even asking could they get our family a drink or anything. Where I work we roll out the red carpet for family. They have privacy, refreshments, and I'll check on them until they tell me to go away! They DESERVE THAT! Instead, I washed my granny myself. Her face, her bottom, got her repositioned, and brushed her hair.. One last time. Around 7... I also realized I had YET to see the roommate but I kept hearing them tell her to "sit down". Bless her heart, she had been sitting in her wheelchair since I got there at 3pm. They finally brought her in her room around 8-9pm and got her in bed..... She deserved her space and privacy as well. She also had no business being in a room with 15 people surrounding my granny at 12:39 am as she took her last breathe. She then had to lay in the same room as someone deceased waiting for a funeral home! I left maybe 10 minutes after my granny's passing because I was disgusted with how she had given so much of her life making sure everyone had the care they deserved. That was robbed of her. My only saving grace was the fact that we did all fit in the room to surround her as she passed away. Brookdale by all accounts was disgraceful to our family. I am sad to even imagine any other family experiencing that. I hope some serious changes are made before it happens to someone else and their family. I also wanted to say that despite our horrible experience they did have some women there that did reach out a hand during our time of desperation. She was very understanding and kind; kindness goes along way. I won't name names, but she and the few others that previously worked with my granny know who they are!

They have caregivers, nurses, and culinary staff that have been there for over 20 years. That tells you everything you need to know about the culture. There are always fun activities available with many opportunities for socialization. They now have a care company on-site providing supportive services for the independent residents as well. Gone are the days of moving into an independent apartment just to have to move to assisted living or long term care community with the addition of care needs. The new management company has been making huge improvements. The Jane is now The Barclay House, new name with the same quality care and attention to detail Tarboro has come to depend on. I would highly recommend it as a senior living solution for anyone in the area.
