Lesson Learned = TruGreen will take your money to service your yard, but it is up to you to make sure they do it correctly. If you don't, there is a risk of damage to your yard (at least for me, they destroyed my front yard in 11 months). Location: Central NJ I had a brand newly sodded yard (less than 2 years old), and I hired TruGreen in October 2023 because I wanted to have one vendor to service my bushes and yard. In June 2024, they serviced my yard and attributed browning spots to "heat stress." They did not take the time to see if the areas could possibly be damaged by insects. They did not service my yard in July, and by August, my yard looks exactly like the pictures. One technician (JUSTIN D) came out and told me that "chinch bugs" and "sod web worm" were the culprits plus lawn disease. He assured me that he sprayed for the bugs (albeit late since the grass is dead). He also told me that he was not surprised that I had a lot of weeds since I wasn't serviced for 2 months. Again, foolish of me to think I would be scheduled appropriately. He came across as defensive and put the onus on me to have called sooner as "we're a team". I spoke to someone else at TruGreen (who came across as nice and concerned) and recommended a "manager" come out to look at the yard / potentially making "resources available" for any repair. The "manager" (ANTHONY U) who showed up with a lit cigarette told me that "chinch bugs damaged my yard not us". This is very true, and I must have been foolish to think that TruGreen (under a "TruMAINTENANCE" plan) would have at least investigated browning areas back in June. The "manager" (bless his heart) tried to pitch their seeding service (non-complimentary of course). If I could trust them to do quality work or if the technicians might have showed a little sympathy, I might have given that a try since my yard is now a disaster. I feel like a fool for trusting them, but it does give me joy to know that I will never give this company a penny again. See below for some lessons I learned (in case you decide to give them a try): 1) I signed up for the TruMaintenance plan which did not include Lawn-Damaging Insect control. However it did include a "Lawn Assessment" where I would have assumed they could have alerted me to any potential problems / opportunity to upsell a different plan. It's probably better to sign up for TruComplete or TruHealth in hindsight OR monitor the yard closely yourself in case there are issues they don't look for or catch. 2) Make sure you tell them to spray and service your entire yard -- you will have to show them exactly where to go (including the area between a side walk and street). For me, they didn't bother to spray weed control between my sidewalk and street, so that area has been overtaken by weeds. 3) Note that different people can show up to service your yard so try to be home while they are servicing it to make sure that whoever shows up actually services the entire yard (unfortunately, they usually serviced my home on Tuesday / Wednesdays when I would be physically at work). read more

The South Plainfield NJ office is a joke. My service is notify 24 hours when an application needs to be done. Twice they disregarded telling me ahead of the scheduled date and put my 2 pets at risk because I did not know they need to be secured. Sales guy was nice but service horrible. I was charged $210.38, guy came and did front lawn only. I reached out to them and they said they were sorry and will send someone to do the backyard. Two days later he came and sprayed a quarter of the backyard and left. Meanwhile he was in the truck on his phone for a good 20 minutes but spent maybe five minutes on our lawn. I reached back to customer service to cancel, they told me I wouldn't get any partial refund as they are a no money back guarantee company. Would not recommend their service. Called TruGreen several times after my lime application asking for my free soil test so I could see the pH. 3rd call now and they still haven't done it. Called their customer service to find out with their aeration and seeding, what the application rate is so I can compare to other offers. First time they said they'd have the local office call me... never happened. Second time they said the technician can only say after he's done the work. Last year I paid for their tree and shrub service and then saw on my camera they didn't fertilize half my shrub beds. They came out after i complained, but the technician told me that their service isn't normally a complete shrub and tree service, only certain ones. After the call TruGreen gives the option to stay on to take a survey. After I completed my call, expressing my disappointment the woman on the other end refused to hang up for me to take the survey. After 15 minutes she finally hung up... but had figured out how to prevent me from leaving a survey. I'm not going to use their service again. read more

My lawn needed help very badly years ago. I used to fertilize it myself and followed a plan but I still had plenty of weeds, dead spots, and crabgrass. I turned over the job to TRUGREEN a few years back and my lawn has never looked better. It's green, full, healthy, and no weeds. I even have the shrub and tree service. They also have never looked better. I pay them at the beginning of the year and they come and do what they need to do. My service plan is online and there if I want to review it or comment on it. I have not called them back for any reason since they started. Don't get me wrong...I water my lawn responsibly and keep it at a healthy length. Be patient....one or two applications isn't going to bring your lawn back to look like Yankee Stadium. It takes time. read more

I called them back several times to get rid of the weeds that I pay them to do and a nasty woman answered and said she can't guarantee them coming to do the weeds. I signed up for TruGreen full lawn service and mosquito control. Nearly immediately after the first lawn treatment large areas of the lawn starting browning and thinning. We have weeds everywhere still and the grass is dead in large areas, allowing even more weeds to root and get in. My lawn was in better shape last year without TruGreen. The first mosquito application seemed to work well, but once the mosquitos started coming back I called them. They told me they come every 4-6 weeks instead of the 3-4 weeks I was told on the phone. They came and did a complimentary application which did not stop the mosquitos. They then came for their regularly scheduled about 2 weeks later and the mosquitos also did not stop. I called them to cancel and get a refund on the reminaing treatments I did not want. They tried to convince me to let them resolve the issues but I could not risk them completely killing the lawn, so I cancelled. Next day they called and asked if there is anything they could do, I said to give me a full refund, but they would not. They claimed their guarantee is a service guarantee, not a money back guarantee, so they will not refund me. Be careful, read the fine print and expect your lawn to do worse than it did without TruGreen. read more

Requested their services for weed control and Aeration and Overseeding for a new lawn. Total Cost with discounts came to a little under $1k, and had the cancel the rest of the services which was weed control that they call lawn Service. Only was able to get back about $300 because i had to cancel due to poor service quality. Quality of Weed Control 0/5 No idea if they came and sprayed anything, I have evidence of them putting a invoice receipt on my door, but of them actually spraying anything i am pretty sure they didn't (they came out probably once a month) Value of Weed Control 0/5 Definitely can not say anything was of value; weeds if anything came out even worse. Quality of Aeration & Overseeding 1/5 I did see them aerate my lawn and lay down seed. The reason for the low score is because aeration is minimal soil was broken up enough to allow seed to take. Not enough seed was laid down. And the Biggest thing was they did this service on 8/7/23. That is the beginning of August and when i asked about this service i specifically said to have this done in the Fall which is the best time to overseed a new lawn. Not in the middle of the hottest season of the year. Where there is no moisture in the ground or temperatures in the high 80's to let the seed burn up Value of Aeration & Overseeding 1/5 They did do the "service" i can vouch for that but for the value i would really like to say zero. because barely anything took. (And that was the only section where i sprayed weed control a week before i decided to call these people) Conclusion: I had to reach out to Tru Green Corporate and cancel the service they did apologize and excuse the poor service, and refunded me ONLY THE PORTION OF THE SERVICES THAT I PAID FOR THEY DID NOT PERFORM YET. The rest they said they would contact the local office that performed the services and have them reach out to me and amend the issue of lack of work they performed for me. They did not, and will be making a follow up call, I spent over $600 dollars for basically a few plugs of grass that sort of took, Now do i recommend their services maybe for a different TruGreen location but definetely not this one. They definately did not, they said that they knocked on my door to talk about their services they definetley did not. Maybe tell me they will be coming out to take care of the issues beforehand so i can mow the lawn to get it as low as possible before they apply their weed control and etc so they can take on the weeds. We gave them a shot for almost two years to see if we were happy with the outcome of our lawn (front and back yard). Now months later.. we get a collections notice from them stating we had an outstanding balance. Not only does their customer service suck. this is a terrible landscape service, first of all, I prepaid the lawn service for the whole year and they started charge me for service even my contract is not ended yet. ( their explain is they only charge for the calendar year so this is the time I need to pay for this year's service, but when I signed up with them, I paid the amount for the whole year service not just a calendar year!) Next, we just closed our house last year and I noticed there are weeds in our lawn, so we noticed our mail advertise and started truegreen as our lawn service. this spring, our lawn looks more terrible than we inspected the house last year. My husband is so frustrated at their service and kept asking them come to solve this problem. They came. Several years ago, I hired Tru-Green to handle my lawn needs, as far as treating my lawn. The goal was to have the nicest lawn in the neighborhood. Someone came out and designed a course to take to achieve that. I agreed to all and any treatments they suggested. Needless to say, I did not come close to having a lawn anyone would be envious to have. I contacted a supervisor who came out and walked my lawn with me. He agreed the lawn was less than desirable. He offered a free aerating and overseeding to solve my problem. What I got was a bill for the (free) service and zero growth to my lawn. This past Spring, I reached out to them again. The supervisor was unable to get out to my house because he had people down with Covid but would get back to me. Of course, he never got back to me. I continued to cut my lawn like instructed and water it despite the drought we were having. I made repeated phone calls to Tru-Green but the only concern of theirs was getting paid for the continued treatments I was getting. Every time someone came out to treat my lawn, they would acknowledge the lawn looks like hell, but they would just dump more fertilizer, making the weeds grow stronger. Of course, I would also get billed for the treatments. Next step is to call my credit card company and explain I paid for a service I never got and have my funds refunded to me. Something has changed at TruGreen. They have young kids going around spraying lawns that don't know anything about lawn care. Had a special request I called in prior to my visit to NOT apply pre-emergent (only fertilizer) on my newly renovated/seeded lawn. Technician shows up and starts spraying pre-emergent. This was a $10k lawn renovation between 80 yards of soil, seed, labor... that was ruined in one visit by a young punk that couldn't pick out a weed from a barrel full of them. Don't expect to speak with managers either, apparently they don't like to speak with customers. Was told I should hear back in 48-72 hours for a major issue. Lost a customer and will be getting a bill for any damage. CUSTOMER BEWARE. They lost a customer and will be receiving a bill for any damage done. After two applications of weed killer(that I had been assured that the sedge grasses would be taken care of) the only thing dying was my good grasses! After talking to customers device , who were all professional, a third service was performed to kill the weeds.A branch manager was supposed to call and review the issues with me, crickets thus far. Since beginning the service with TRUGREEN this year, and after only 3 applications, my lawn has begun to transform from a sea of green weeds to a luscious green lawn of grass. The expertise of the technician is beyond my expectations. His knowledge of lawn problems is excellent and the advice he offers helps me to maintain my lawn properly. I like that I am notified of a pending appointments/applications. I recently needed to change a scheduled visit and was able to do so quite easily with a simple phone call. Having the same technician for all my applications is a excellent. On his visits, Antonio remembers and checks previous problem spots to make sure they have been eradicated. I get the impression that he takes the same care with my lawn as he does with his own lawn. To say that I am impressed with both my technician and TRUGREEN is an understatement and I can recommend TRUGREEN without reservation. read more

Long story short, if you want to get good service from this company you MUST be present each and every time they come to treat your lawn. Not entirely a bad experience but bad enough that when my one year contract was up, i terminated service. My lawn was almost all crabgrass before hiring Trugreen. I've over seeded and aerated on my own and installed a sprinkler system. All combined my lawn looks ok, but considering the amount of money paid to Trugreen and their guarantee, i should be 100% satisfied and I'm not. I still have quite a bit of crabgrass, clovers and other weeds that continue to thrive. The straw that broke the camels back was watching the technician walk around my property(i have cameras all around the perimeter) and randomly spray patches of weeds, completely skipping entire areas that were clearly being overridden by crabgrass and weeds. I called and was told a manager would call me back, never did. They say they'll come out as many times as needed until your satisfied but seriously how many times can you call. its exhausting and shouldn't be that difficult. Just starting their service and will update as necessary but to give an upfront review: 1) I didn't like the fact that as soon as I entered my info on their site I thought I was getting an online quote, instead, I was getting a robo call dialer every 30 minutes. Granted I spoke to a person when I finally answered, but no human has exactly 30 minute precision. I was at work, so it was after about 7 missed calls that I answered. No voice mails left, just auto calls making my pocket buzz in meetings. I'll be honest, I almost turned them down for that. 2) I signed up anyway, because I need a lawn service to undo the previous owners damage. Their prices compared to the competition big box lawn service wasn't even close. They were significantly cheaper(if the other guys were the only choice, I'd be looking at a writing a home depot review for lawn equipment). In terms of price, even the guys mowing my lawn said they don't get into this business because the big guys make it so cheap that you can't compete on price. I checked out their recommended cheap guy, and TruGreen was far cheaper. So they win on price. 3) As I said above, I only just started, and will revisit this after I can see how my lawn does, but in terms of the application process so far, they're like ninjas. I usually get in my car and go out my garage. I have to check my front door for packages after I get home from work because I rarely use that door. Today, I got home and found a notice that my lawn treatment had been done too early for him to knock(around 7:15am) and so he just left the note. I didn't know any of that happened before I left for work. They were in, got the job done, and were out. That's exactly what I would want. Lawn service that I don't even know is there, just making my lawn better invisibly. If it turns out they destroyed my lawn... well, I'll come back to this then and you'll see another 1* review, but as of now things are going great.
