One of the best stops we made during our vacation in North Carolina. We didn't realize there was a cafe attached - we were initially stopping to see the general store. What a pleasant surprise this cafe was. Friendly service and a decent sized menu. We ordered at the counter and found a seat in the cozy back room. We would have sat outside but it was a bit too hot. The food came out hot and fast and OMG the portions were huge. I'm not kidding when I say, this was the best chicken salad I've ever had. The croissant was loaded! And so was my husband's club sandwich. The crispy Brussels were insanely good. Again, some of the best I've ever had. The gentleman that took our order came to check on us and I had to let him know that our lunch was amazing. He told us that it was his family's restaurant and they took food quality very seriously. There is NO doubt about that. I wish this place was in my backyard. Seriously the best lunch we had while on vacation!! I was told their oatmeal cream pies were a hit, so I had to get one for the road. They were not kidding. I tried to make it last a couple days to really savor the sweetness and it was torture. I wanted to inhale the cookie sandwich after the first bite. The cookie was chewy and soft, and the cream balanced it out perfectly. If the owners see this, I need a whole box shipped to me ASAP. The only thing I will note is... while browsing the general store after having lunch, I stopped to let one of the employees know that they had a great selection of items. She proceeds to look at me weird and then ask me if I had two hats on. What? She then reaches out and touches the brim of my hat. She acted like I was stealing. I took my hat off to show that I indeed only had one hat on and I was so put off by the interaction. I hadn't even tried on any of the hats they had for sale. Not sure if they have a problem with people stealing there and are just hyper vigilant, but please do not touch customers. Thank goodness the lunch was fantastic, because I would have been very upset after that interaction. Otherwise a great experience aside from that weird interaction. Super friendly girls in the gift shop. Cute goods for sale and nicely kept displays. Place was clean, and the bathroom was nice. I got a cappuccino from the cafe and it was hands-down the best cappuccino I've had in Madison County. A little pricey, but worth it. Woman who made it was very personable and she knew how to make a REAL cappuccino. Not a latte. Hard to find out here! I look forward to making this little gem a regular stop on my work commute. Went today Tried the cheeseburger and got salt and pepper fries, The burger was juicy , perfectly dressed and on a fresh bun. The fries are hand cut and cooked just right. Best I have had in a while. The elderberry lemonade was summer in a glass - bright, adventuresome and just sweet enough. Staff was friendly and helpful. Live guitar music and a deck in back that overlooks the river. Very good meatloaf sandwich. Very nice people and great service. I visited on a cool (27F) day and it was nice and relaxing sitting next to the fire eating lunch. After lunch, we ventured into the adjacent store and purchased a container of chicken noodle soup for dinner and breakfast burritos for the next day. Both items were premade and refrigerated and reheated well and were delicious. I look forward to visiting again the next time I am in the area. read more

That's all I tried so far. The Cajun Fries are better than 5 Guys in my home town of Houston, Texas. Everyone waves at you when you come through. This place is an absolute gem! I didn't expect such a neat little spot while driving through the mountains. The food is surprisingly amazing at the cafe. It's obvious to us the ingredients are local or otherwise fresh. Compared to most "road food" stops, I was shocked. We really fell in love with the area so we've visited multiple times and order something new every time. Not only does the food exceed my previous "road stop judgement" expectations but usually is even better than most places I have visited in the cities along the way! They really put a lot of intention and love in their food here and it shows. Also for the general store, it's been great to be able to pick up some goods that I have often forgotten. I ordered a cheeseburger, and the server suggested that , have it cooked medium, so I did. Th first bite was delicious. The second bite was RAW HAMBURGER MEAT. Not "rare," flat-out RAW. If you're out this way, you know it's pretty remote without any cell signal. This store is a good find in an area without many options otherwise. Half of this place is a general store and the other part a restaurant. On the food end, there's homemade cookies, ice cream cones, and a section for sit down dining. On the supplies side, there is hardware, T shirts, hiking and fishing supplies, gasoline, propane and more. Again I didn't take pictures! We dug right in but just know my family and I really enjoyed everything. When I'm up in the mountains I try to find those hole in the wall out of the way places to eat. This checked both boxes for sure. This place is a cool little general store on a stretch of road known as the "Rattler". The store has grocery items, t-shirts, and some hardware items as well. A good place to stop to eat and stock up or restock on food during a hike. Now to the food! As you walk in you grab a menu and order and pay at the counter. My wife ordered the French Onion chicken sandwich, I ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich, and my daughter had a Reuben Sandwich which was a special for the day. I also ordered an appetizer which was a hush puppy/ corn nugget combination. Everything was cooked to perfection. We all loved our sandwiches and the appetizer. It was definitely some of the best tasting chicken I've had in a long time. My wife enjoyed her sandwich which is basically the topping of a French Onion Soup on a chicken sandwich and my daughter's Reuben was quite tasty as I stole a bite to ensure it wasn't "poisoned". This is my job as a dad looking out for his daughter of course! When we walked in I saw a case which had cookies inside. There were chocolate chip cookie sandwiches filled with a white cream and half dipped in chocolate and there were homemade oatmeal cream pies. We opted to share an oatmeal cream pie after I was talked out of getting the whole case. This was fantastic! We loved this cookie and definitely wanted more while being happy that we only left with one. Also we got to speak with the gentleman working the register and the cook and they were really nice guys and great to chat with. He informed me that his wife made the cookies. We let him know how much we enjoyed the food and that on our return to the mountains would be coming back. I can tell that there was pride taken in this food. An OASIS in the wilderness! I was wandering and exploring through backroads in the mountains and was enjoying being totally lost .. location-wise and in the beauty around me. Stepping back into my car after stopping to take some photos, I saw my fuel tank was nearly empty! 20 miles left to go and there were no towns in site on the GPS (which I just then turned on to check out). Coasting down the mountain I was hoping against hope for some sort of a gas pump along the road. At this tiny intersection .. there it was! Trust General Store .. with GAS! I had to go inside to pay (no biggie) and the place was wonderfully countryside-style set-up and decor. Clean and friendly too! Every single person employed at Trust is friendly and courteous, and it shows by their smiles and service. The general store has cold drinks and good snacks, but the restaurant is absolutely phenomenal. The chef, Chris, has created a menu that's to die for. I'm lucky enough to be in the area almost daily and I've eaten almost everything on the menu. I can honestly say I've never had anything that I didn't love. A few highlights are the BLT with jalapeño bread and a fried egg from a local farm, and my favorite item on the menu, the Spicy Pig, which is a spicy take on the pulled pork sandwich which is topped with the best cole slaw you'll ever eat! He does daily specials as well. If you're ever there when he does the Carolina Classic burger (Go Heels!) order it. I've actually eaten it the past 2 days!!! It's a fantastic burger topped with mustard, chili, onions and slaw! Good gracious, my mouth is watering now!!! This place is awesome. The people are awesome. The community is awesome. WE WERE SO LUCKY TO STOP HERE!! I can't say enough about the incredible high quality from scratch food, hand made drinks and pastry chef level deserts. The absolute best hot chicken I've ever had. Unique flavor filled meatloaf, fluffy corn puppies with delicious side sauce, truffle fries and crispy perfectly cooked brussel sprouts as well as incredible pimento grilled cheese and that was AFTER we ate homemade oatmeal cream cakes and banana pudding. DO NOT MISS the hand shaken lemonade and the mint iced tea (that she picked from her garden last night!) We are from Chicago and have traveled the nation on our Harleys stopping at mom and pop cafes like this. There is NO comparison! Everyone should come eat here! We stopped here on our way to Hot Springs NC and were so glad we did! My husband loved his Nashville hot catfish sandwich, and I enjoyed my catfish sandwich as well (which was not spicy). First off, this place is incredibly clean. Every employee was wearing a mask as well. Very friendly and easy to get to in this little mountain spot. For the cafe, we couldn't decide what we wanted so we got the Trust Burger, the BLT, and the Spicy Pig sandwiches. WOW. This place DID NOT disappoint! Each sandwich was better than the last. This place is an authentic gem! Perfectly situated at a remote but oh so beautiful crossroads in the north carolina mountains about an hour from Great Smokey Mountains National Park and also from downtown asheville, this is the perfect short roadtrip destination for lunch or dinner. It is exceptionally clean and well maintained. The food is fresh and much better than the usual roadstop fare. I loved my "crispy" teriyaki chicken sandwich and my son devoured his cajun pulled pork platter. Service was friendly, with the "mountain" hospitality i have come to love over many years of visiting this area. I recommend sitting outside next to stream weather permitting. This is by far my favorite restaurant. I drive 45 minutes one way to eat here as much as I possibly can. Their Valentine's and Mother's Day dinners are spectacular, and the Thanksgiving dinner is absolutely delicious. The annual Fall Festival is our favorite event of the fall, and we never miss it! I've gotten my favorite pair of earrings from the store. I would rather eat here than anywhere else. I highly recommend the beans and cornbread, and the mac and cheese is great. The steaks when they have them are phenomenal. It is well worth the drive from Asheville. Just go! read more

Thank you Trust General Store! Came across this place on a recent hiking trip to the Hot Springs, North Carolina area and it quickly became an oasis for us while we were there. Half of the place is a general store with local arts and crafts, sporting goods, etc., and the other half is a great café. We found ourselves regularly popping in for hiking supplies, coffee, fuel, etc. We ate there on several occasions, lunch and dinner, and always left happy. They had local pecan crusted trout one night with corn relish, green beans and mashed potatoes and smoked chicken (that they smoke in-house) on another. Desserts, pastries and muffins were all homemade as well and really, really good. There aren't a whole lot of great options in the area (you'll be far out enough that mobile coverage is non-existent), but Trust General Store is one of them. Keep in mind that Madison County is (legally) dry, so no beer or wine at this place, but you might be able to find some local hooch (shine) if you talk to the right person. Great front porch, outdoor seating by a small river, super friendly staff and really good home-cooked food. read more

We stopped here by accident the other day and very glad we did. The cafe has specialty coffee and I was desperate for some real coffee after days of riding on the motorcycle. I took my extra large thermos in not sure how they would react. They gladly washed it, filled it with some of the best coffee I've had and enjoyed a nice conversation with the owner while we waited for the coffee to brew. I had company and we were riding in the countryside and came across Trust Cafe. We stopped and were very pleasantly surprised. The sandwiches were delicious. Everybody was very pleased with their food but even better was the wonderful service. The woman who took our order and her husband have taken over the cafe this summer. They were friendly, quick, delivered our food with a smile. Then to our surprise she thoughtfully came out with a pitcher of hortchata for us, a Spanish drink and my guests Spanish.
