The coffee is superb - with ever changing options of single origin blends to choose from, as well as the usual house blends that most cafes have, which are always extremely tasty. Their menu is on the unique and very very yummy side of the cafe spectrum. And their many baked goods are all superbly crafted. In fact there is little that the Red Door Corner Store doesn't do well. Their staff are all knowledgeable, friendly, happy and attentive. And they sell a range of home made jams, conserves, chutneys and sauces that you can buy to take home with you. They also sell take-away freshly baked bread, if you are still feeling a little peckish are a veritable feast of Corner Store delights. I really can't recommend this place enough. I even like the fact that it is situated in a back streets of Northcote - not another shop in sight.

The menu is, well, delightful. Seriously, it made my heart feel all squishy and happy as I browsed through. Maybe it was the delicate logo and pretty typeface (font nerd), the seasonal menu ingredients (broad beans picked from the cafe's veggie garden anyone?) or perhaps the non-standard cafe ingredients (duck eggs, manchego, black pudding? Yes please!)... Either way, my face was all happiness as I sat in the sun deciding what to eat at this barely two week old cafe. I settled on 'Smoked trout, soft boiled egg, avocado and herb salad on sourdough' ($18) and it was everything I'd hoped it would be. High quality ingredients put together without apparent fuss, but a whole lot of love. The smoked trout lay sexily amongst chunks of avocado and a soft boiled egg, cut open to reveal its bright orange oozing centre, the herb salad (complete with another non-standard cafe ingredient - fennel pollen) scattered over the top. A winning dish and one I'd be keen to have again next time if it weren't for the pea and bacon hash, the bircher muesli or the prawn and scallop ravioli that sit high on my "must try" list. If I were going to move to the suburbs and have the white picket fence, I'd move to Kew just to be close to Ora.

It's in the back back streets of Clifton Hill but has an impressively constant stream of customers. There's a low key casual decor that sort of works here. The pork and fennel sausages in this dish were spectacularly good. As good as you could make, I reckon. If they were made on site someone here is a sausage maker of rare genius. They're superb. The beans were lovely as well with nice heat evident from the jalapeño. Nice bits of ciabatta to spread the beans on as well. This was a really lovely and perfectly sized dish. The world's most beautiful woman was disappointed in her dish though. It was a toastie with pulled pork. I had a taste and liked it but she wasn't keen on the chilli in the pulled pork. Her point was that the chilli part wasn't noted on the menu and she wasn't keen on the unexpected heat at all. A real shame. Super coffee to finish. We both really enjoyed our respective coffees, a long black and a flat white. They kindly gave one coffee free because of the unnoted chilli in the toastie. I'd definitely return here. They do however take their coffee seriously, about to break into Melbourne with their own roast. As a fledgling business, they're just getting the basics right at the moment but promise that as they find their feet they will start offering a whole lot more including retail for the beans. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out (and given that their basics are already pretty good, I'm anticipating adding another star in time!) Food wise, just a couple of savoury items and sweet treats like Dr Marty's crumpets, delicious-looking bagels and slices/cakes. The staff are welcoming and chatty, making it really tempting to perch in front of their machine or on their solitary two-person chair in this 'standing room only' style coffee shop. Great coffee, assorted cakes and treats (such as salted popcorn cupcakes and choc peanut butter cookie sandwiches) and very friendly staff make for a winning combination and they do it well here. It's an interesting setup here with the register sitting behind the coffee machine but it works for the space and it makes it easy to get served and get out easily. With a few coffee options in the same block Rex Tremendae has quickly become my go-to coffee stop for a quick pick me up before heading home in the short week or so they've been open. I've yet to see it too busy, but with the promise of more delicious treats I can see the small space quickly filling up, and it's definitely worth stopping in for!

I don't even want to post this review because it's a hidden gem in my opinion and I don't want to share it with anyone!!! (I'm an only child, have I mentioned that?) The place is small, but cozy and the staff are so attentive. They also sell three of my favourite things: Darryl's Peanut Butter, Panna Choloctae and freshly baked sourdough bread. Check out their little nook of goodies when you head to the register to pay. The menu changes monthly depending on the fruit and veg that are in season (I'm a sucker for places that do this!). It a great place for vegetarians and vegans because the dishes are so creative and healthy, you never feel like you're missing out. It's also great for all you omnivores and meat eaters.
