When you are coming home with a car full of groceries and the closest you can get is three blocks from your home... it's kind of crappy! Also, to the sweet volunteer who would barely let me drive through while a cop gave me permission, I appreciate you taking your job that seriously but we all need to cooperate! I do appreciate the flyer I received the week before, but was not expecting to be trapped from getting back home. Next year I will certainly put it on my calendar and try to make it out there - instead of trying to get through it! Just wanted to give you a kind "heads up." Thank you!

Truly a Tucson classic. This is a great place to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon during the…read moremonths of February and March. They usually do about 8 races, every 30 minutes, and there's plenty to do between race time. They generally will have a pretty large selection of food trucks available or you can eat from their in-house restaurant underneath the grandstand. This past weekend, they also had a live mariachi band and you can also wander over to the stables to see the horses. And, apart from the casinos, this is one of the few places where you can actually do some real betting. Check it out at least once, you'll enjoy it. Pro tip: Make sure you pick up a program to get into on the odds without having to stand around and read the boards.

My friends and I have made this an annual tradition (lol, 2 years. I can call that a tradition, right?) and it's a great day in the sun screaming and yelling for horses we know nothing about. Pick 'em however you want: jockey/horse bright colors, horse name, pretty horse, cute jockey or god forbid stats, then go place your bet, grab a beer and stand trackside for your race. $5 general admission, $4 beer, margaritas, hotdogs/nachos/etc and you're set. You could pay a few bucks more to sit in the upstairs, indoors section but then you'd miss all the fun. You'll see all kinds of people from old white guys chewing a toothpick and studying the program and cheatsheets to families out for the day to girls dressed to impress in heels and sundresses. Do yourself a favor and ignore those along the interior road charging $5 for covered parking in the adjacent business park and just park in the track's dirt lot for free. Come to Rillito, have fun, have a beverage in the sun and get excited about your $6.20 quinella box winnings!!

The facility…read moreis great - if you are going to play pickleball year around you need to join a club with indoor climate-controlled courts, and Ace has arguably the best around. The staff are super-friendly and helpful. I always had at least one question for them every time I came in for one of my classes. The instructors were very good, and I got the impression that the lessons are reasonably standardized, so no matter who you have teaching that class you get similar instruction. I took several of the classes twice so I can vouch for that. The level of play here in general is quite high, and I had difficulty finding other beginners to play and practice with. I thought that was a bit ironic given their great Starter series! Ultimately I decided on another club that had better organization for beginner play. Perhaps when I get good enough at the sport I'll revisit my choice and come back to Ace!

After just one performance by the Something Something Theater, I'm completely hooked. They produce…read morethe kind of thought-provoking, moving pieces that I haven't seen elsewhere in Tucson. Everything is thoughtfully put together to pull you into the production. I just visited the last production of Dov and Ali, a beautiful story of people from different backgrounds, faiths, and ages who are struggling with reality and their true self. There are only 4 actors in this play, so each one really has to carry a strong presence, and they did. By the end, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Really beautifully done. Their next performance is Taming of The Shrew (an adaptation) which I can't wait to see.

I'm here quite a bit because I spend the better part of my spring and summer working with track…read moreathletes. The stadium and track are very well maintained and the facilities are very clean. The stadium seating faces east so a hat or umbrella for morning and afternoon events might be necessary. By Evening you will be shaded by the stands. Parking is limited so be sure to get to your event early. More often than not you are going to have to part in the neighborhoods nearby and walk to the stadium. My favorite summer time events here are the Tucson Parks and Rec Track meets on Tuesdays. These meets are for all ages and all skill levels. I love the 5 and under races - the little ones running around are SO cute!!

I've played here twice in the last week and on both occasions really enjoyed my time out there…read more The course's greens were recently punched (*it's a summer time thing that has to be done in the desert) and ironically, after I figured out that the ball was not going to move very much because it was jumping straight ahead the whole way to the hole (instead of being affected by the slope and lean of the blades of grass) I started to drop some long putts. In addition to Arizona National being both, a really nice golf course (that will beat you down and keep you on your knees if you let it), and that it sits in a location that truly amazing, the staff that works here is exceptional. The cart girl who brought us beverages in the desert heat was exceptionally pleasant and caring, as was the young man who took my food order when I stayed behind and grabbed a post-round lunch. He too was also super friendly and courteous...and patiently listened as I shared a couple boring golf stories. I also really enjoyed the interactions that I had with the starter, and the "customer support" guy who sets your clubs up in the cart, and the pro shop guy were all very enjoyable and made me feel welcomed and appreciated. I will close by sharing that I did have an off-putting experience (where the pro-shop guy was openly rude to me for no apparent reason). This was two years ago and I had vowed to avoid the course... and actually had not played there since. I am glad that my golf buddies invited me to play there last week as the experiences were really good--in every way that a round of golf could be.

Yesterday I had the House Salad, full of the usual vegetable suspects, a hardboiled egg, several slices of bacon, and a sliced chicken breast, hot off the grill and super tender. The default dressing is ranch but I love the chef's Caesar, so opted for that. I was almost able to finish the salad and it was delicious. The restaurant and golf course are semiprivate so open to the public. Wednesday and Friday nights are dinner specials and holidays have special menus. Thanksgiving was fabulous (no cooking or cleanup for me!) and a teaser was just put out for St. Patrick's Day.

While walking up, the facilities did not look like much but don't let that fool you. I was very impressed by the condition of this course. From tee box to greens, all were well manicured and kept up. I was very impressed on how the greens rolled. Almost every fairway on the front nine all looked great. I was also impressed with the sand traps. It had been a minute since I've played a course with sand that wasn't super hard. I enjoyed playing here so much, I came back a second day to play nine holes again. The first day I walked and it was only $28. The next day I rode and it was only seven dollars more. The gentleman in the pro shop was extremely courteous and got me right out to play. I did not take advantage of their practice facilities, but I saw a nice putting green and a very cool place to practice your short game with lots of room to hit balls further than most areas like that. They also had their own driving range a little separate from the course. The only negative I could find was the condition of the cart path on a lot of holes, but I'm sure that that's just due to desert heat. The cart did not offer GPS, but with so many apps that do, that's not a detractor for me anymore. Not only would I recommend this place for an inexpensive round of golf, but if I'm in the area, I would definitely come back.
