It is like a small family here. The classes cover many different topics and are very "hands on". There is a play area for open play and a large room for more exercise type activity. There are educational field trips throughout the school year. The only reason its not 5 stars is because I would prefer a longer (duration) learning program instead of 2.5 hours per day. He had such an unbelievable and valuable experience at Thornridge that he was actually crying and truly sad it was over (as was I). He has built many incredible friendships and has nothing but great memories from the classroom to the fun field trips he attended. The teachers genuinely care about the children and are very creative in the lessons they teach. For instance, learning the alphabet, numbers, teaching the kids to write their names, and even cooking! They are very involved with every activity they do and truly enjoy teaching the children. They put so much more time into the regular school day (2.5 hrs), their day is not over after 11:30 am, by no means. I am very happy that my youngest son will be going there next school year for the 2 day program and then the following year for the 5 day Pre-K program. My niece had previously attended Sylvan when she was in primary school so she was familiar with them. My sister contracted with them to provide Subject tutoring (chemistry) for my niece. There was a delay to the start as my niece plays basketball for her school. By the time the basketball practice schedule came out several days had passed for which my sister told them way ahead of time. Eventually it reached the point where there was no way the schedules was going to gel so my sister canceled totally. The first person she talked to said she couldn't get a refund because Sylvan had created a schedule. Yes that's right she couldn't get a refund because Sylvan HAD CREATED A SCHEDULE. Not that she had attended a session. No, no, no. Not that she had called at the last minute to cancel. No no no. Not that she had no called no show. No no no. She had never attended a session at all. They felt they were due the money because THEY HAD CREATED A SCHEDULE! The second person she talked to, one Stephanie Miller who claimed to be the owner of that Franchise was condescending, Rude and extremely dismissive. "I am the top of the chain of command and there will be no refund issued because we created a schedule for her. It doesn't matter that she never attended." We don't know if there were great tutors there able to help my niece or understand chemistry because SHE NEVER ATTENDED. There probably were. The bottom line is this if you feel like giving money to Sylvan for nothing then go right ahead call Sylvan. My sister didn't buy that many hours but some people pay more and to get told that there is no refund because they created a paper schedule is fair out and out ridiculous. The ultimate in Greedy Grasping Money Hungry business. If you could call it a business. And one Stephanie Miller with her condescending attitude is that me to be avoided at all cost. This is one of the largest schools in Indiana, as far as I recall them cramming down our throats. When I was there I think the enrollment was at something like 2,600 or 2,800. It's a tri-town school that takes students from Dyer, St. John and Schererville (that's me). And it's really not a bad school if you don't want it to be. I mean, sure, I hated half of high school... but who doesn't? Eh. Nothing new. I made awesome friends here, even if I don't talk to a lof of them anymore. I slacked for a decent chunk of my high school career (in some classes I didn't... notably my Computer Applications classes and my Arts & Crafts classes) when I really shouldn't have (can't really change that at this point) but not many of my teachers were classifable as 'bad'... some were certainly more boring than others, but there were some outstanding ones to balance it out. And even if I didn't do a lot of my homework (doh) I still did fairly well in class... so my teachers mostly just pressed me to try to do my homework. Which I kind of didn't... uh... but let's not talk about that, really. Yeah, looking back I really have to admit it wasn't half bad. I'd like to go back and see some of my teachers. If I ever decided to spawn (no thanks), I wouldn't really have an issue sending my kids here. It's really a pretty decent school in a nice area. I hated it while I was there, but looking back I'm pretty sure it was a decent education. Yeah. Sorry I slacked so much in C++, Wally! Science Olympiad 4 lyfe. Also, seriously, woman? Made the experience less stressful since I was enrolling a infant at the time. She would literally text me pictures of him every other hour to make me at ease! I've never had any issues with the staff, they've done a nice job reporting accidents as well. They use the ProCare app which is 10/10 to me. Ms. Reyna is also one of the teachers who has watched my big boy flourish, she's so warming & we love her!
