There is even a knitting corner. The snug is covered in graffiti and in another area there is a collection of toys. Dogs and children are welcome. The food is good my ham sandwich was top notch and Judi's prawn sandwich was reported as 'excellent'. There is a separate evening menu that has a limited choice, which suggests that the quality is likely to be good. Don't expect haute cuisine but do expect good pub food, entertaining and welcoming locals, friendly bar staff and a fascinating mooch around the various bits of 'stuff' around the pub. The setting is tasteful and elegant, nothing fancy but nice. The bulk of the seating is upstairs. The menu is well sized; not overwhelming. A nice "About" story is printed inside the menu, introducing you to the players and bringing a nice personal touch to the experience. I ordered the duck confit with black pudding and bacon lardons and jus starter and the lamb rump with couscous for the main. For the wine I ordered a glass of local red wine (from Kenton winery down the road), which surprised me as well. Very drinkable and matched my meal nicely. A taste of a potato and garlic with truffle oil soup (biche?) was served while I waited and my taste buds were raring to go. The duck confit with black pudding was like an umami explosion in my head - utterly delicious. I was sad to see it end. The lamb rump, which was served with a sage infused jus, was even better. This was by far the best meal I'd had in Exeter (and one of the best in the UK). After discussing the jus with Ryan, the owner, he brought out a small bowl for me to dunk my bread. Unpretentiousness scores high in my book. That bordered on awesomeness. To finish I ordered the cheese platter and another glass of wine. Ryan introduced each cheese to me (all locally produced) and as I was the last customer in the restaurant we chatted about a few things. A good host, new to the trade with an excellent product. My parents went back to their original home there upon retirement and I still visit my mother there when possible. Tonight we must go the Rock at Georgeham, she announced during a recent visit, so go we did. I had a vague memory of having gone there many years ago, but vague it remained. It is essentially an old timbered pub, with a modern conservatory. Food is served in both areas and we decided to sup some Rioja in the traditional area. I think duck really deserves something a bit sweeter, but if anything it was my fault because I chose it. La contessa and la dowager contessa were delighted with their choices. Reasonable prices, excellent food, great ambiance and also friendly staff who definitely seemed just that bit more professional than average. Do take a look at the excellent website and if you are in that neck of the woods, you will not regret visiting.
