We believe in the American Farmland Trust. One reason is a visit to Turner Farm, which is an amazing experience for a quiet tranquil weekend on North Haven. We were fortunate to stay on the farm in one of the rental houses, and it was delightful to enjoy a meal on the porch overlooking the bay. The staff is led by Ben, their general manager, who came to the farm as an intern six years ago, and never left! The variety of produce and eggs raised in the farm, even on the saddle of fall and summer, is amazing. The tomatoes were some of the sweetest I've ever tasted. We took the ferry from Rockland, and the buzz on the ferry was how wonderful the bakery was: the bread and cinnamon rolls were sublime. Friday night dinner was a barn dinner, with many courses based on produce from the farm, supplemented with protein from local purveyors for fish and beef. I would highly recommend the barn dinner and if you are fortunate a stay on the farm in one of their limited rentals. Saw the special on NatGeo about the restaurant. 100% worth it! We came by boat and made a day of it. The staff was lovely. The owner is a sparkly dude who clearly loves what he does. Wonderful evening at Turner Farms Barn Supper. Beautiful farm, lovely people and delicious food. We were greeted with a cocktail and wine for cocktail hour to stroll the property. Artisanal cheeses, pickled veg, delightful crackers and toasts were presented in-front of a backdrop of farm fresh flowers. The dinner bell was rung and we make our way to our seats where a salad of mixed green and homemade shallot vinaigrette and fresh baled herbed focaccia were waiting for us. This was followed by heirloom tomatoes wish an avocado cream. Next up was roasted squashes and poblano, smashed herb butter potatoes and your choice of tenderloin or baked stuffed tomato. The entire meal served family style so we were able to try everything and we were not disappointed. The evening was sealed with a lovely butternut cheese cake topped with fresh cream and husk cherry jam. If you are on the fence like we were about attending this barn supper because of reviews don't be. This was a delightful experience with delectable farm to table food. Fresh grown vegetables, meat, and dairy products on the island! Whoo hoo! Not exactly "cheap" (tho nothing really is when you live on an island). Everything here is top notch organic. Much of what is grown, raised, and farmed is used at Nebo Lodge in the village (same owners). The farm stand is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and at the farmers market in the village on Saturday mornings. During the peak summer months (July and August) you'd be smart to show up early. The lines can be long, however service is at a friendly pace. Everyone is smiling and having fun. This is as much a social affair as it is a buying excursion. You're not in a hurry, you're on vacation. There isn't always a large quantity of specific items available, and it's on a whatever-is-available and first come, first serve basis. If you can't find something in the freezer or on the tables, just ask - I've had the help there scramble around the farm and actually find extra items that had been stashed away. My one, and only, complaint is that the house-made sausage is not fatty enough and thus tends to lacks flavor. More fat please! I want my sausage yummy, not dry like sawdust! :) The sausage recipes could be tweaked a bit. There's no reason this shouldn't be great. Bring the kids and wander around the farm. Visiting and wandering is encouraged. Go find the goats and pigs... Enjoy the awesome views of Goose Rocks Lighthouse and eastern Pen Bay. read more

It's a farm. There's a lot of people and machines that work there. They have cheese, usually chèvre, mixed with herbs. It's good. They have a freezer that they keep the bodies in. The bodies of pigs and chickens. Sometimes just the pork chops. Often the whole chicken. It is a beautiful spot. Sometimes they do these things called barn dinners. I haven't been to one. However the chef is very good; the barn of the farm is transformed into a dining room for the evening. The vegetables are very fresh, too. They're only available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-1. Often times there is a line to buy beets and other leafy greens. read more
