I really love this place. It is perhaps the best representation of small maine country stores. Situated in South Thomaston with a commanding view of the harbor and adjacent Keag River, the store features a nice selection of wine, beer , and liquor , as well as soft drinks and small selection of groceries. They roast their own turkeys in house year round and offer turkey dinners as well as sandwiches. I've tried their turkey sandwich which was quite good, however, their Reuben was truly great. Headed out on the water for the day ? Grab some sandwiches and drinks for the trip. We really like this place--a classic general store with just what's needed for sale on the shelves, and simple well-prepared food for lunch! The staff was friendly and helpful and the customers varied from tourists like us to workmen on lunch break. Some members of our party had ordered the Turkey sandwich with stuffing and cranberry sauce and the cook came out to tell us it would be a moment because she had to make more stuffing! Friendly staff, great food. Nothing fancy. We visit here every year and always eat here several times. The crab and lobster rolls are our favorite. When it comes to Maine's most iconic sandwich, the lobster roll, there are a lot of opinions. Strong ones. Some folks claim there is only one proper way to eat a Downeast lobster roll, and that's on a Country Kitchen top split, butter-toasted roll with a "good amount" of cold, fresh (not frozen) knuckle and claw lobster meat and nothing else except a dollop of Hellman's on top. Don't make it too big (are you listening, Red's?) or it'll cost more than your monthly cell phone bill. Don't foul it up with vegetables, herbs, aioli or curry; and for heaven's sake, don't get Miracle Whip any where near. There are those (usually "Flatlanders" from Massachusetts or Connecticut) who prefer their roll topped with melted butter. Ok. Fine. But here's an endorsement of an outlier roll, found on pretty little Westkeag harbor at a plain country store known locally as "The Gig" (though it's spelled 'Keag) that will knock your socks off. First, don't expect much of anyplace to sit down. Go in to the store, step to the back and place your order. There's a lot to choose from, but you won't go wrong with a lobster or crab roll, a bag of chips and a six-pack of frosties. You can take your booty across the road to the park where you'll find picnic tables and a civil war cannon. At first, your sandwich will seem entirely wrong since it'll be served warm on a -- get ready -- Hamburg roll. There's a good bit of meat in there between the butter toasted slabs mixed (mixed, I tell you!) with just enough mayo to bind the seafood. You may sneer, but one bite and you may agree that this is, perhaps, one of the best lobster rolls in Maine. Certainly worth the pretty trip to South Thomaston. read more

I opened the door and looked in to get some sundries and water but the two men at a table in the front had no masks on; woman behind the counter had her mask rolled under her chin talking to a woman with no mask on. This place is a staple in tiny little South Thomaston ME. Not far from where I grew up in Owls Head, the Keag store sits on the beautiful harbor. This is the kind of place you'll find rich tourists who just flew into Owls Head airport on a private jet, sit next to someone's grandpa Joe who is just enjoying a nice crab roll by the window. They've got all the provisions but they also do a great take-out (or sit in!) lunch. Their crab roll and fries is one of the most affordable and freshest around. You can also sit out on the picnic tables on a nice day and enjoy the harbor. This place has been around for ages and will continue to live on with the tradition. Just finished dinner here again and I wasn't disappointed. The lobster was great the girl behind the counter was fantastic. The girl behind the counter felt we waited to long for our lobsters and apologized profusely. We didn't feel we waited to long. Old fashioned quick mart with great food. I had the garlic pizza and my wife the double cheese burger. The pizza crust is that hand tossed with those big bubbles (see photo) and they use plenty of cheese. The burger was excellent too (see photo). We have been eating plenty of lobster and this was a pleasant break. read more

Love the Keag! It's always been there and hopefully always will be. It still holds the charm of the old general store while being a great little take-out/eat-in place. Best crab rolls around! I have about 50 lobster/crab roll joints dialed into my GPS with proximity alerts that go off when I'm within one mile of them. I plugged in the Keag Store over the winter and forgot about it. I was on my way to knock off a roll at Waterman's Beach and a proximity alert went off for the Keag Store. I had just finished an amazing crab roll at Patty's in Edgecomb and I knew I must eat at Waterman's Beach, what to do? Eat 3 rolls within 1.5 hours, that's what to do! I had a crab roll at Keag, since I was saving myself for the Lobster at Waterman's. I so wanted the lobster roll after seeing a newspaper reader's poll taped up in The Keag Store indicating that they had the best lobster roll around, with Waterman's coming in second. I still needed to save my lobster ducats for the establishment with the James Beard Award - see review for Waterman's Beach Lobster. The Keag Store is great! The crab roll was delicious and a bargain at $5.95 with chips and a pickle. While wating for my roll I checked out the deli case and noticed all the carb salads (macaroni, potato) were made there and looked amazing. I bought a small container of pot. salad- nummers! My friend Suzi Q says "nummers" when she eats Toscannini's Ice Cream. Keag Store gets a solid "A" and next time I am anywhere near there, I'm getting the lobster roll. My only beef and this applies to the Thomaston joints- what's with the hamburger buns? Maybe it is some sort of micro regionalism? I know it is the same dough as the hot dog roll, but how many times do I have to say, "A proper lobster roll comes on a buttered and grilled side-split hot dog bun!" read more

My husband were in Maine in a long weekend and hit this place up for breakfast. Cute little breakfast store with basic grocery items, liquor and beer/wine. We had the breakfast eggs over steak and cheese with homemade potatoes and the corned beef hash. Great food and service!!!! read more

The experience did not match the hype. A regular best of for lobster rolls in local publications, this general store sits on a scenic road off US1. We passed up established lobster pounds to taste the lobster roll on a round bun. There two sizes and we opted for the large figuring it would be swimming in lobster meat. Sadly the lobster was drowning in mayo. The lobster but not chunky and meaty. The sandwich came and pickle. No pickle was an uber bummer. The price. 14.25. Ouch. The lobster rolls surprised me here. I had seen that they were reviewed well, but based on the condition of the store, was skeptical that they could be good, but I really enjoyed them. They come on a plain Kaiser roll, buttered and toasted. I don't want to rain on the "Keag Store parade, but he other day I was in the area and hankering for a lobster or crab roll both of which I've had in the past. Pulled around to the front and noticed a rat poison feeding station next to the foundation. I just couldn't get past that. Sorry, guys but you've got to deal with the rodent problem. I rate this place as five stars based on the fact that it is completely unique. You can get breakfast, just about whatever you want, at 5:30 in the morning and the place is packed with people who are beginning the work day. Try the pancakes, but it's all good. By day this place has all kinds of seafood, pizza, and burgers, which are all good. In addition it's a real general store with steaks, produce, beer, soda, etc. with which you could take home and make a darn good dinner. They do a good take out business, particularly in pizza, which is excellent. Local beef jerky? Whoopee Pies? Home made doughnuts? Yup pretty much you name it and they've got it. But best of all this is a real Maine place, not fancy for the tourists, but tourists are welcome as well. One of a kind and truly great on so many levels. read more

I grew up with the keag and still love going there. I remember picking up some veggie Italians and some chips and a drink before hitting up Lucia Beach. There Italians are still delicious and they are by far my favorite place to go for a lobster roll. They put them on a hamburger bun, which in my opinion is the only way to go because you get way more lobster meat! They don't add any fancy bits to their mayo, thank god, and then they toast the whole thing to a warm perfection. You can also pick up groceries, pizzas, fries, beer and a liquor now too. This is the best lobster roll your going to get since Waterman's closed. Frankly it's nearly as good. Had about 5 over 3 days, and I was never the only person in line. Nice spot, but but be prepared for the local regulars to have the limited seating. Still, it's well worth getting the stuff to go, as I noticed most people doing. This review is for the RESTAURANT, not the general store aspects. We ordered two lobsters cooked: one was good; the other was tough, dry and green on the outside. My guess, it had been dead for a while before cooking. Breakfast was below average which would have been bearable, except the coffee was worse than dishwater. Gem of a little corner store. We stayed within walking distance and appreciated all they had to offer. Breakfast is very reasonable, I swear the blueberry pancakes weigh in at 4 pounds. We did not eat lobster or lobster rolls here (save that for Watermans or Golden Compass), so I can not vouch for those menu items.
