I have been booking vehicles from the Turo app for a few years now and each of my booking have been practically flawless. Until I picked up a car in St. Louis. The photos of the vehicle were flawless and I liked the fact that this particular Host offered the most driving miles in the area. I will say I will give this host some grace as he was generous and allowed me to pick up the car several hours early without any extra fee. The car was pretty beat up in certain areas of the vehicle which were not disclosed. The car was zip tied at the bottom front corner of the vehicle. The car had a smell which I sprayed some freshener. I did inform the host regarding this. The seats were dirty etc. I have never ever received a car that was dirty from a host I also informed the host. I took plenty of thorough photos to protect both parties and uploaded them to the Turo app. The prices are pretty good cheaper than getting a rental car. Honest negative review. This was my first, only and last time using Turo. When I picked up the car that looked great on the website (which was an Audi and I paid over $500 for 3 days), it was not in the condition advertised. Among other things, there was a huge 5 inch gash in the driver's leather seat (conveniently not in the website photos) and the car reeked of cigarette smoke (not noted in the website ad for obvious reasons). I immediately notified Turo of the car's condition, but they offered no solutions or restitution. I was in a rush and either had to accept the vehicle or delay my trip substantially. Aside from bad customer service in this situation, a major flaw in the Turo model is that if you get a car that is in horrible condition (as was the case with my trip), there are no other cars immediately available and no representative on site to help you deal with the situation, versus a rental car company like Avis or Enterprise where they can deal directly with the issue and immediately give you a suitable replacement car. So Turo is really a luck of the draw - if you get a great car, congrats you win the lottery. But if you get a bad car, you're screwed. And to reiterate, the customer service response was basically "too bad, buddy, we don't care." To be fair, the car drove fine and the seat gash did not negatively impact the driveability of the car (which is what Turo pointed out when I complained). That being said, there's more to a car you're renting than just functionality, especially a luxury car that costs $500+ for 3 days. There are certain expectations that come with a car and price like that. If you're trying to impress anyone with the car you've selected or just trying to enjoy being in a luxury car, it would be (and was) incredibly embarrassing and deflating to drive in that car, clearly killing the experience you were hoping to have. Also, and even more importantly, I had to drive all weekend in a vehicle that smelled like a dirty ashtray. The next issue was when I returned the vehicle. This being the first time I used Turo, the directions were a little unclear and I wound up returning the car 4 minutes past the 30 minute grace period. Turo charged me, a first time customer, over $90 for this 4 minute late return. I asked them to reconsider and they faked care, but again, I got the "too bad buddy" and was charged the extra $90+. I also asked for some consideration for the condition of the car, especially the cigarette smoke, and again Turo feigned care and offered $30 off for a $600+ rental. What I drew from this experience - first, you're taking a big risk by renting from Turo. If the car is not as advertised, you really have no recourse or alternatives and Turo just doesn't care. Second, Turo's insistence on charging a first time customer $90+ for being 4 minutes late tells you everything you need to know about this company. Turo just doesn't give a sh*t. Terrible customer service team, don't even try to dispute any charges because they will tell you since there are no specific rules, you can be charged whatever amount for any amount of missing fuel. I filled up the car ($55.37) before dropping it off at the drop off location. It was right below the full tank mark (the host even showed me a photo). He takes it to get refueled two days later with premium gasoline and I receive an invoice of $51 for 6 gallons. $106 is the total I paid for gasoline for that car ($55 the day of drop off) and ($51 two days later for a refuel fee). I called customer support and tried to dispute it and they said although they completely understand and see the issues in the evidence provided and seeing how I was being overcharged, they couldn't do anything because they don't have any specific rules about this situation. From the photos attached it becomes even more clear that I was overcharged for gasoline. If I ever use this rental service again, or if anyone plans to use this rental service, make sure your tank is 100% full at drop off and take a photo of the dashboard because they can charge you for whatever gasoline grade they want if you don't. I had to try to quickly take pictures and told him that he had not verified my license. He said he just did and took off. I could not upload the pictures. When I got to my destination, I tried to upload everything and it still said I was not verified. I messaged him. The car was unkept. The rear view mirror was duck taped, the windows didn't work, the key fob locked me out several times and said it was a theft attempt when I got in, the seats were torn, there was sticky goo in the door handle on the passenger side, the car was making a grinding sound. The owner was not responsive. He never addressed the refund. He did not respond to my first inquiry either about gas type until the night before return. When I returned the car, I called both numbers he provided in the chat and messaged him about the keys. I got no response. After an hour, I got an automated response. I have spent hours on with customer service from Turo to be partially compensated as guaranteed due to lack of responsiveness from the owner . Completely disappointing and frustrating experience in dealing with Turo and the Host (Bashar of RSR). I will also add, this is far from my first rental through Turo and I have had generally positive experiences in the past, including a 5-day rental earlier this month. Quick summary of the rental in question: Car was booked over a month ahead of time for a 2-day rental. Coordinated with Host and arranged my own travel to the pickup location (after submitting my license 24 hours in advance) to have them be a no show. This is a completely unacceptable way to run a business as I have an event I'm supposed to use the car for tomorrow. I messaged the host but they could not be bothered to respond. Overall, a waste of time and resources spent to arrange my own travel to the pickup location where an empty parking lot awaited me. No one ever mentioned the rear door until Turo magically decided to change the location. Even worse: They never responded to my evidence. They charged my card without explanation. Two-the only complaints I see are from her being asked to give halfway decent service for the fees charged or complaining because she could not charge more fees. She stated that is Turo, but on Turo's website and when I called they verified yes she services Ohare and Midway. It was up to her. Not Turo.
