Throughout my son's fourth-grade year, we determined that his difficulties are connected to dyslexia. I have been exploring affordable resources outside of Columbia Elementary and the Fruitvale School District because, although an assessment has been conducted and a current IEP is in place, I am concerned that the system is overburdened and lacks the necessary resources to adequately support these students on campus. My husband and I initially signed our child up for tutoring club starting while my kid first started Kindergarten due to unusual signs of struggling in reading and writing from hearsay of my child's teacher. When I first called, I was told immediately how great of a parent I was to call now rather than later because later means it's too late and too hard to catch up. It made me want to sign my child up more knowing I was doing the right thing for my kid. Came to find out my child was showing signs of dyslexia and thankful tutoring club helped my kid out. As of today, I was told if my child came in for help, they would have never known my kid would have dyslexia which is a huge because I was told my kid had the worse dyslexia and it's going to be some work to help my child. They also helped my kid with self-confidence as well which plays a huge factor in learning. So, if I could go back and do it again I would. My son was 6 yrs old and in Kindergarten when we initially signed up at the Tutoring Club. We started at 3 times a week for 1 hour, as my son was having challenges with blending sounds and really getting frustrated when trying to read. I felt defeated and didnt know what to do. My son is a high school senior this year and sought help from the tutoring club for SAT prep and college essay review. With two weeks until the SAT exam, the tutoring club was extremely responsive of his need and time constraints and assembled a team of tutors to meet with him for a total of 10 hours before the exam. Tutoring was specific to his need and based on an assessment of his practice SAT test, focusing specifically on where he lacked understanding. I have had two High School students benefit greatly from the Tutoring Club. They have expert staff that are able to tutor geometry, physics, calculus and all other High School classes including AP. Great place. We brought my daughter in because she was struggling with reading. She was already receiving speech services privately and at school but because of her difficulty hearing and saying sounds, her reading level was low. She was able to jump back up to grade level and now reads above grade level. They made her feel comfortable, not afraid to put in the work. Now two years later, after the pandemic our youngest has struggled with reading. He's been going for just two months now and has almost bumped up a grade level in reading. He still has a way to go but he's more confident now in class and volunteers to read, even if he may not know a word he tries. read more

This last spring, it became clear that my son's grades in jr. high were not okay. Nearly all Ds and Fs and he's a smart kiddo. Greetings and Salutations, I normally don't write reviews but I had too write this review for the outstanding staff and the director of the tutoring club. My daughter who has always been on the principles list since 1st grade. She started her 5th grade year with a "mean" teacher and combined with her anxiety her grades dropped I tried my best I could to help her, but I my experience in 5th grade was decades ago. Amanda is the true hero here. I met with her she could tell I was beyond stressed about the situation I felt helpless as a parent and it was not a good feeling. I was willing to do whatever it took to help my child succeed since I believe our children are our most important resource. The Tutoring Club has been a great asset to Bakersfield's educational community. As a high school counselor I have seen academic success in students who were struggling in one or more classes before attending tutoring sessions at the Tutoring Club. They not only raised their grades in the classes they were being tutored in but gained more confidence in their academic ability. I have not only seen successful academic turn-arounds in my counselees, but have seen it through my own grandchildren who sought tutoring at the club for upper division math.
